An article of footwear is disclosed that includes an upper and a sole structure secured to the upper. The sole structure incorporates a support element that includes a fluid-filled chamber, a first insert, and a second insert. The chamber defines a first surface, an opposite second surface, and a sidewall extending between the first surface and the second surface. The first insert is secured to the first surface and at least partially recessed into the polymer material of the chamber, and the second insert is secured to the second surface. In addition, the chamber may be pressurized to deform the first insert or the second insert.

1. An article of footwear comprising: an upper;a sole structure secured to the upper, the sole structure defining a void in a heel region thereof, the void extending through medial and lateral sides of the sole structure; anda plurality of support elements located within the void, wherein each of the support elements comprises a top wall, a bottom wall and a sidewall, the sidewall extending between the top wall and bottom wall around an entire periphery of the top wall and around an entire periphery of the bottom wall,is formed from one or more flexible polymer materials, andis sealed and contains a fluid at a pressure above atmospheric pressure, and whereina sidewall of a support element of the plurality on the lateral side has a first thickness,a sidewall of a support element of the plurality on the medial side has a second thickness, andthe second thickness is greater than the first thickness. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the plurality of support elements comprises four support elements. 3. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein each of the support elements is cylindrical in shape. 4. An article of footwear comprising: an upper;a sole structure secured to the upper, the sole structure defining a void in a heel region thereof, the void extending through medial and lateral sides of the sole structure; anda plurality of support elements located within the void, wherein each of the support elements comprises a top wall, a bottom wall and a sidewall, the sidewall extending between the top wall and bottom wall around an entire periphery of the top wall and around an entire periphery of the bottom wall,is formed from one or more flexible polymer materials,is sealed and contains a fluid at a pressure above atmospheric pressure, andcomprises a first insert bonded to one of the top and bottom walls. 5. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein a support element of the plurality on the lateral side contains a fluid at a first pressure,a support element of the plurality on the medial side contains a fluid at a second pressure, andthe second pressure is greater than the first pressure. 6. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein each support element of the plurality comprises a second insert bonded to the other of the top and bottom walls. 7. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, the first insert is formed from a material having a greater modulus of elasticity than material forming the top wall, the bottom wall and the sidewall. 8. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, a material forming the first insert is semi-rigid or rigid. 9. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, the first insert has opposite surfaces and a surrounding sidewall, the surrounding sidewall being at least partially recessed in the one or more flexible polymer materials of the support element. 10. An article of footwear comprising: an upper;a sole structure secured to the upper, the sole structure defining a void in a heel region thereof, the void extending through medial and lateral sides of the sole structure; anda plurality of support elements located within the void, wherein each of the support elements comprises a top wall, a bottom wall and a sidewall, the sidewall extending between the top wall and bottom wall around an entire periphery of the top wall and around an entire periphery of the bottom wall,is formed from one or more flexible polymer materials,is sealed and contains a fluid, andcomprises a first insert bonded to one of the top and bottom walls, a diameter of the first insert being in a range of 90% to 110% of a diameter of the one of the top and bottom walls. 11. The article of footwear of claim 10, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, a material forming the first insert is semi-rigid or rigid. 12. The article of footwear of claim 10, further comprising at least one conduit placing the plurality of support elements in fluid communication. 13. The article of footwear of claim 10, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, the support element is pressurized to place an outward force upon the one of the top and bottom walls and deform the first insert to decrease a curvature of the first insert. 14. The article of footwear of claim 10, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, the support element is devoid of internal connections joining the top and bottom walls within an interior periphery of the sidewall. 15. The article of footwear of claim 10, wherein each support element of the plurality comprises a second insert bonded to the other of the top and bottom walls. 16. The article of footwear of claim 10, wherein, as to each support element of the plurality, the first insert has opposite surfaces and a surrounding sidewall, the surrounding sidewall being at least partially recessed in the one or more flexible polymer materials of the support element.
