A method of simultaneously cleaning and disinfecting an industrial water system is described and claimed. The method involves the addition to the water of the industrial water system of a Compound selected from the group consisting of the alkali salts of chlorite and chlorate and mixtures thereof; and an acid, followed by allowing the water in the industrial water system to circulate for several hours. The reaction of the alkali salts of chlorite and chlorate and acid produces chlorine dioxide in-situ in the water of the industrial water system. The chlorine dioxide kills microorganisms and the acid acts to remove deposits upon the water-contact surfaces of the equipment. This cleaning and disinfecting method works in a variety of industrial water systems including cooling water systems.

1. A method of cleaning and disinfecting an industrial cooling water system by causing the initial formation of chlorine dioxide within the industrial cooling water system, the method comprising: providing an industrial cooling water system comprising circulating water;first adding to the circulating water within the industrial cooling water system a first amount of an acid selected from the group consisting of: hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, amido sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulfamic acid, citric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, peracetic acid, peroxyacetic acid, peroxyformic acid, glycolic acid, oxalic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, and butyric acid, thereby creating a circulating acidic aqueous solution having a pH, wherein the first amount of the acid is sufficient to cause the pH of the circulating acidic aqueous solution to range from 2 to 2.5; second adding to the circulating acidic aqueous solution a second amount of a Compound comprising an alkali salt, the alkali salt selected from the group consisting of: sodium chlorite, sodium chlorate, potassium chlorite, potassium chlorate, and combinations thereof, thereby creating a treated circulating acidic aqueous solution having a pH, wherein the second amount of the alkali salt is sufficient to provide a concentration ranging from 50 to 250 ppm of the alkali salt in the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution; maintaining the pH of the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution to range from 2 to 2.5;circulating the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution through the industrial cooling water system for an amount of time ranging from 1 to 8 hours and then adjusting the pH of the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution to a range of 4 to 6;draining the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution from the industrial cooling water system;wherein from about 10 to about 1000 ppm of at least one triazole corrosion inhibitor is present in the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution;wherein from about 10 to about 100 ppm of at least one dispersant having a weight average molecular weight ranging from about 500 to about 20,000 is present in the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution;wherein from about 5 to about 100 ppm of at least one surfactant is present in the treated circulating acidic aqueous solution, the at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of: an ethylene oxide propylene oxide copolymer, a linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, an ethoxylated phosphate ester, an alkyl polyglycoside, and combinations thereof. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said alkali salt is sodium chlorite or potassium chlorite or mixtures thereof. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said alkali salt is sodium chlorate, potassium chlorate, or mixtures thereof. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said acid is sulfuric acid.
