A data Interface for transferring digital data between a host and a client over a communication path using packet structures linked together to form a communication protocol for communicating a pre-selected set of digital control and presentation data. The signal protocol is used by link controllers configured to generate, transmit, and receive packets forming the communications protocol, and to form digital data into one or more types of data packets, with at least one residing in the host device and being coupled to the client through the communications path. The interface provides a cost-effective, low power, bi-directional, high-speed data transfer mechanism over a short-range “serial” type data link, which lends itself to implementation with miniature connectors and thin flexible cables which are especially useful in connecting display elements such as wearable micro-displays to portable computers and wireless communication devices.

The method of claim 1 wherein the client manufacturing information field comprises an identification (ID) field of a client device. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the ID field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a product code, a name of manufacturer, a serial number, a week of manufacture, and a year of manufacture. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the input/output device type of client field comprises a pointing device field of a client device. 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the pointing device field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a value for an existence of the pointing device, a value for a type of pointing device, and a value of a communication status of the pointing device with the at least one client. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the input/output device type of client field comprises a keyboard device field of a client device. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the keyboard device field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a value for an existence of the keyboard device, a value for a type of keyboard device, and a value of a communication status of the keyboard with the at least one client. 8. A hardware system for providing client supported features and capabilities to a host in a mobile display digital interface (MDDI) system, the system comprising: a processor;means for providing fields to a client capability packet for the client supported features and capabilities in the processor, the fields comprising an input/output type of client field, client manufacturing information field and connectivity status of the client field;means for providing values to each field unique to at least one client in the client capability packet in the processor; andmeans for transmitting the client capability packet from the at least one client to the host in the processor. 9. The system of claim 8 wherein client manufacturing information field comprises an identification (ID) field of a client device. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the ID field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a product code, a name of manufacturer, a serial number, a week of manufacture and a year of manufacture. 11. A storage media comprising program instructions which are hardware computer-executable to implement client supported features and capabilities to a host in a mobile display digital interface (MDDI) system the storage media comprising: program instructions that cause fields be provided to a client capability packet for the client supported features and capabilities, the fields comprising an input/output type of client field, client manufacturing information field and connectivity status of the client field;program instructions that cause values to be provided to each field unique at least one client in the client capability packet; andprogram instructions that cause the client capability packet be transmitted from the at least one client to the host. 16. The storage media of claim 15 wherein the client manufacturing information field comprises an identification (ID) field of a client device. 17. The storage media of claim 16 wherein the ID field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a product code, a name of manufacturer, a serial number, a week of manufacture, and a year of manufacture. 18. The storage media of claim 15 wherein the input/output device type field comprises a pointing device field of a client device. 19. An apparatus for providing client supported features and capabilities to a host in a mobile display digital interface (MDDI) system, the apparatus comprising: a link controller adapted to; provide fields to a client capability packet for the client supported features and capabilities in the link controller, the fields comprising an input/output device type of client field, client manufacturing information field and connectivity status of the client field;provide values to each field unique to at least one client in the client capability packet in the link controller; andtransmit the client capability packet from the at least one client to the host. 23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the client manufacturing information field comprises an identification (ID) field of a client device. 24. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the ID field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a product code, a name of manufacturer, a serial number, a week of manufacture and a year of manufacture. 25. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the input/output device type field comprises a pointing device field of a client device. 26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the pointing device field comprises at least one member from the group consisting of a value for an existence of the pointing device, a value for a type of pointing device and a value of a communication status of the pointing device with the at least one client. 27.
