A network based distribution system and method is disclosed for permitting subscribers to exchange playable media items, such as movies in a digital format. The exchange system includes a number of components that interoperate to improve a subscriber's experience, including an intelligent queue monitor which works on his/her behalf to identify potential items of interest for the subscriber. The system can thus automatically exchange for desirable titles, including other titles from other subscribers, under a set of programmed directives from the user, and/or in response to supply/demand requirements of other subscribers.

A method for renting playable media items, comprising: managing a general inventory of media titles for rental using a first computing system;managing a plurality of rental queues using the first computing system or a second computing system in communication with the first computing system, each of the plurality of rental queues being associated with a subscriber and containing a subscriber-chosen and subscriber-prioritized list of media titles that is to be delivered to and returned by the subscriber in accordance with predetermined rental rules, and at least some of the plurality of rental queues having one or more media titles designated by offering subscribers as being available for auction to other subscribers;iteratively renting items in the plurality of rental queues to the plurality of subscribers in accordance with the predetermined rental rules by providing physical copies of the media titles to the plurality of subscribers or by providing content associated with the media titles electronically to the plurality of subscribers via a computing network;conducting electronic auctions using the first computing system, the second computing system, or a third computing system, each of the electronic auctions being conducted among a plurality of the subscribers for ones of the media titles designated as being available for auction when the titles designated as being available for auction cannot be provided using the general inventory of media items and, for each auction, designating a winning subscriber for each auctioned media title; andtransferring the auctioned media titles to those of the plurality of rental queues associated with the winning subscribers of the respective auctions. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein one or both of the first computing system or the second computing system are connected to the computing network and the method further comprises receiving requests for media titles through the computing network. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the computing network comprises the Internet. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first computing system or the second computing system includes or is associated with at least one web server configured to provide a website allowing the plurality of subscribers to access the system for renting playable media items. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying a reserve bid in connection with each of the one or more media titles designated as being available for auction. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the winning subscribers agree to pay at least the reserve bids. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising crediting the offering subscribers with at least a portion of the proceeds of the auctions. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising distributing content for the media titles over the Internet to the subscribers. 9. A system for renting playable media items and exchanging rental rights to the playable media items distributed by a network based media service provider, comprising: at least one computing system connected to a computing network, the computing system being configured to: establish a personal queue for each of a plurality of subscribers, each personal queue containing a subscriber-chosen and subscriber-prioritized list of media titles that is delivered to and returned by one of the plurality of subscribers in accordance with predetermined rental rules,cause at least some of the plurality of subscribers to designate certain of the media titles in the personal queues as being available to others of the plurality of subscribers subject to a reserve bid,receive a request over the network for a first media title from a first subscriber of the plurality of subscribers,determine whether the first media title can be provided to the first subscriber from a first inventory of media titles without requiring a bid,if the first media title can be provided to the first subscriber from the first inventory of media titles, provide the first subscriber with a copy of the first media title from the first inventory,if the first media title cannot be provided to the first subscriber from the first inventory of media titles, search inventory for the personal queues to determine whether or not the first media title is among the designated media titles that are available to the others of the plurality of subscribers subject to the reserve bid, andif the first media title is located among the designated media titles in one of the personal queues, offer the first subscriber temporary access to the first media title in exchange for payment of the reserve bid and in accordance with the predetermined rental rules. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the at least one computing system includes or is associated with at least one web server configured to provide a website allowing the plurality of subscribers to access the system for renting playable media items. 11. The system of claim 9, wherein the first media title is movie in digital-versatile-disc (DVD) format. 12. The system of claim 9, wherein the at least one computing system is further configured to allow others of the plurality of subscribers to bid for the first media title along with the first subscriber and to provide the temporary access rights to a highest bidder. 13. The system of claim 9, further comprising a recommender system configured to determine ones of the media titles that are likely to be of interest to the first subscriber. 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the at least one computing system is further configured to automatically add at least some of the media titles that are likely to be of interest to the first subscriber to the personal queue of the first subscriber. 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the media titles that are likely to be of interest to the first subscriber are added to the personal queue of the first subscriber in accordance with queue replenishment rules. 16. The system of claim 9, wherein the at least one computing system is further configured to accept terms for the reserve bid from a second subscriber. 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one computing system is further configured to credit the second subscriber with compensation in accordance with the reserve bid. 18. The system of claim 9, wherein the at least one computing system is further configured to distribute content for the media items over the Internet to the first subscriber.
