1. An analyte monitoring system, the system comprising: an analyte sensor;a processor coupled to the sensor and configured to provide sensor data indicative of a concentration of glucose measured by the analyte sensor in a subcutaneous tissue of a host; anda user interface configured to provide real-time glucose information based on calibrated sensor data to a user, wherein the system is configured to calibrate the analyte sensor using reference data from a reference analyte monitor, wherein the calibration is allowed when an absolute rate of change of a calculated glucose concentration is less than about 4 mg/dL/min, and wherein the calibration is suspended when the absolute rate of change of the calculated glucose concentration is greater than about 4 mg/dL/min. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to prospectively calibrate the analyte sensor. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to calculate the rate of change of the glucose concentration from calibrated sensor data. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor is a subcutaneous glucose sensor configured to continuously measure a glucose concentration in a subcutaneous tissue of a host. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor is a transcutaneous glucose sensor configured to continuously measure a glucose concentration in a subcutaneous tissue of a host. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor data is indicative of the continuous concentration of glucose in the subcutaneous tissue of the host over a period of time. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the reference analyte monitor is a self-monitoring blood glucose meter. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the reference data is indicative of a blood glucose concentration withdrawn from a finger stick and analyzed by the reference analyte monitor. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to calibrate the analyte sensor multiple times over a period of time. 10. A method of calibrating an analyte monitoring system, the method comprising: receiving sensor data from an analyte sensor, wherein the sensor data is indicative of a glucose concentration measured in a subcutaneous tissue of a host;receiving reference data from a reference analyte monitor;calibrating, using an electronic system, the analyte sensor using the reference data, wherein calibrating comprises allowing calibration when an absolute rate of change of a calculated glucose concentration is less than about 4 mg/dL/min and suspending calibration when the absolute rate of change of the calculated concentration is greater than about 4 mg/dL/min; andproviding real-time glucose information based on calibrated sensor data. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the calibrating is performed prospectively. 12. The method of claim 10, further comprising calculating the rate of change of the glucose concentration from calibrated sensor data. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the analyte sensor is a subcutaneous glucose sensor configured to continuously measure a glucose concentration in a subcutaneous tissue of a host. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the analyte sensor is a transcutaneous glucose sensor configured to continuously measure a glucose concentration in a subcutaneous tissue of a host. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the sensor data is indicative of the continuous concentration of glucose in the subcutaneous tissue of the host over a period of time. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the reference analyte monitor is a self-monitoring blood glucose meter. 17. The method of claim 10, wherein the reference data is indicative of a blood glucose concentration withdrawn from a finger stick and analyzed by the reference analyte monitor. 18. The method of claim 10, further comprising performing a first calibration of the analyte sensor prior to performing the calibration of the analyte sensor using the reference data.
