A first sensor transponder may be positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member. A firing trigger may actuate the movable firing member. A motor may be mechanically coupled to the firing trigger. A control unit may be configured to wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor transponder; and control the motor based on the at least one input, wherein, via the coupling between the motor and the firing trigger, movements of the motor cause a force applied to the firing trigger.

The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein the first sensor transponder is positioned at the end effector. 3. The instrument of claim 1, wherein the control unit comprises an inductive element to sense wireless signals from the first sensor transponder. 4. The instrument of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to transmit at least one communication signal to the first sensor transponder. 5. The instrument of claim 1, further comprising: a secondary element positioned intermediate the control unit and the first sensor transponder; anda distal element in electrical communication with the secondary element and positioned intermediate the secondary element and the first sensor transponder, wherein the distal and secondary elements are positioned to receive the at least one input from the first sensor transponder and relay the at least one input to the control unit. 6. The instrument of claim 1, wherein the end effector further comprises a magnetic element coupled to the movable firing member and wherein the first sensor transponder comprises a magnetically sensitive element for sensing a position of the movable firing member. 7. The instrument of claim 1, wherein the firing member comprises a cutting element, and wherein the end effector further comprises: a staple channel; andan anvil pivotable from an open position to a closed position substantially parallel to the staple channel. 8. The instrument of claim 7, wherein the end effector further comprises a magnetic element coupled to the anvil and wherein the first sensor transponder comprises a magnetically sensitive element for sensing a position of the anvil. 9. The instrument of claim 1, further comprising a run-motor sensor in communication with the control unit and positioned to sense a position of the firing trigger. 10. The instrument of claim 1, further comprising a run-motor sensor in communication with the control unit and positioned to sense an amount of force applied to the firing trigger. 11. The instrument of claim 1, further comprising a drive shaft assembly in mechanical communication with the motor and with the movable firing member. 12. The instrument of claim 11, further comprising a run motor sensor for sensing retracting of the firing trigger, wherein, when retraction of the firing trigger is sensed by the run motor sensor, the motor is signaled to forward rotate to advance the movable firing member to act on tissue positioned at the end effector. 13. The instrument of claim 12, wherein the run motor sensor comprises a proportional switch such that the rate of rotation of the motor is proportional to the retraction force applied to the firing trigger. 14. The instrument of claim 12, wherein the run motor sensor comprises an on/off switch. 15. The instrument of claim 12, further comprising: a reverse motor sensor for sensing an end of an actuation stroke of the firing member such that when the reverse motor sensor senses the end of the actuation stroke, the motor is signaled to reverse rotate to retract the firing member; anda stop motor sensor for sensing retraction of the firing member such that when the stop motor sensor senses retraction of the firing member, the motor is signaled to stop rotating. 16. The instrument of claim 12, wherein the end effector includes a helical drive screw, such that forward rotation of the helical drive screw causes the firing member to advance to act on tissue positioned at the end effector, and reverse rotation of the helical drive screw causes the firing member to retract. 17. The instrument of claim 12, further comprising a closure trigger separate from the firing trigger, wherein retraction of the closure trigger causes the end effector to clamp tissue positioned in the end effector. 18. A surgical instrument comprising: an end effector comprising a movable firing member;a first sensor transponder positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member;a firing button for actuating the movable firing member;a motor mechanically coupled to the firing button; anda control unit, wherein the control unit is configured to: wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor transponder; andcontrol the motor based on the at least one input, wherein, via the coupling between the motor and the firing button, movements of the motor cause a translation of the firing button. 19. A surgical instrument comprising: an end effector comprising a movable firing member;a first sensor transponder positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member;a shaft extending proximally from the end effector;a drive shaft assembly extending proximally from the end effector through the shaft such that rotation of at least a portion of the drive shaft assembly translates the movable firing member along an actuation stroke;a firing button for actuating the movable firing member, the firing button mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly;a motor mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly and mechanically coupled to the firing button, wherein, via the drive shaft assembly, movements of the motor cause a force applied to the firing button; anda control unit, wherein the control unit is configured to: wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor transponder, wherein the at least one input indicates a position of the firing member along the actuation stroke; andcontrol the motor based on the at least one input. 20. The instrument of claim 19, wherein, via the drive shaft assembly, movements of the motor cause a translation of the firing button. 21. The instrument of claim 19, wherein the control unit comprises an inductive element to pick up wireless signals from the first sensor transponder. 22. The instrument of claim 19, wherein the control unit is further configured to transmit at least one communication signal to the first sensor transponder. 23. The instrument of claim 19, further comprising: a secondary element positioned intermediate the control unit and the first sensor transponder; anda distal element in electrical communication with the secondary element and positioned intermediate the secondary element and the first sensor transponder, wherein the distal and secondary elements are positioned to receive the at least one input from the first sensor transponder and relay the at least one input to the control unit. 24. The instrument of claim 19, wherein the end effector further comprises a magnetic element coupled to the movable firing member and wherein the first sensor transponder comprises a magnetically sensitive element for sensing a position of the firing member. 25. The instrument of claim 19, wherein the firing member comprises a cutting element, and wherein the end effector further comprises: a staple channel; andan anvil pivotable from an open position to a closed position substantially parallel to the staple channel. 26. The instrument of claim 25, wherein the end effector further comprises a magnetic element coupled to the anvil and wherein the first sensor transponder comprises a magnetically sensitive element for sensing a position of the anvil. 27. The instrument of claim 19, further comprising a run-motor sensor in communication with the control unit and positioned to sense at least one of a position of the firing button and an amount of force applied to the firing button. 28. A surgical instrument comprising: an end effector comprising a movable firing member;a first sensor transponder positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member;a shaft extending proximally from the end effector;a drive shaft assembly extending proximally from the end effector through the shaft such that rotation of at least a portion of the drive shaft assembly translates the movable firing member along an actuation stroke;a firing button for actuating the movable firing member, the firing button mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly;a motor mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly and mechanically coupled to the firing button, wherein, via the drive shaft assembly, movements of the motor cause a translation of the firing button; anda control unit, wherein the control unit is configured to: wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor transponder, wherein the at least one input indicates a position of the firing member along the actuation stroke; andcontrol the motor based on the at least one input. 29. A surgical instrument comprising: an end effector comprising a movable firing member;a first sensor positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member;a shaft extending proximally from the end effector;a drive shaft assembly extending proximally from the end effector through the shaft such that rotation of at least a portion of the drive shaft assembly translates the movable firing member along an actuation stroke;a firing button for actuating the movable firing member, the firing button mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly;a motor mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly and mechanically coupled to the firing button;a control unit, wherein the control unit is configured to: wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor, wherein the at least one input indicates a position of the firing member along the actuation stroke; andcontrol the motor based on the at least one input; anda secondary element positioned intermediate the control unit and the first sensor;a distal element in electrical communication with the secondary element and positioned intermediate the secondary element and the first sensor, wherein the distal and secondary elements are positioned to receive the at least one input from the first sensor and relay the at least one input to the control unit. 30. A surgical instrument comprising: an end effector comprising a movable firing member;a first sensor transponder positioned to sense a position of the movable firing member;a shaft extending proximally from the end effector;a drive shaft assembly extending proximally from the end effector through the shaft such that rotation of at least a portion of the drive shaft assembly translates the movable firing member along an actuation stroke;a firing button for actuating the movable firing member, the firing button mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly;a motor mechanically coupled to the drive shaft assembly and mechanically coupled to the firing button;a control unit, wherein the control unit is configured to: wirelessly receive at least one input from the first sensor transponder, wherein the at least one input indicates a position of the firing member along the actuation stroke; andcontrol the motor based on the at least one input; anda run-motor sensor in communication with the control unit and positioned to sense at least one of a position of the firing button and an amount of force applied to the firing button.
