The current application is directed to intelligent controllers that continuously, periodically, or intermittently calculate and display the time remaining until a control task is projected to be completed by the intelligent controller. In general, the intelligent controller employs multiple different models for the time behavior of one or more parameters or characteristics within a region or volume affected by one or more devices, systems, or other entities controlled by the intelligent controller. The intelligent controller collects data, over time, from which the models are constructed and uses the models to predict the time remaining until one or more characteristics or parameters of the region or volume reaches one or more specified values as a result of intelligent controller control of one or more devices, systems, or other entities.

The method of claim 1 wherein the second model is computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during the current time interval. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein computing the aggregate estimated time from the first estimated time and the second estimated time further comprises multiplying the first estimated time by a first weighting factor to produce a first product;multiplying the second estimated time by a second weighting factor to produce a second product; andadding the two products to generate the aggregate estimated time. 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the sum of the first weighting factor and the second weighting factor is 1. 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the first weighting factor is initially set to a larger value than the second weighting factor and wherein, during the current time interval, the first weighting factor is incrementally decreased while the second weighting factor is correspondingly incrementally increased. 7. A method for controlling an HVAC system, the method comprising: controlling the HVAC system to change an ambient temperature from a first temperature to a second, target temperature during a current time interval;during at least a portion of the time interval, selecting one of an aggregate model or a single model for the change in temperature with respect to time during control by the HVAC system;when the aggregate model is selected, computing an aggregated estimated time that represents a time remaining for the ambient temperature to reach the target temperature by computing a first estimated time from a first model, computing a second estimated time from a second model, computing the aggregate estimated time from the first estimated time and the second estimated time, anddisplaying the aggregate estimated time on a display device; andwhen a single model is selected, computing an estimated time that represents a time remaining for the ambient temperature to reach the target temperature from the selected single model, anddisplaying the estimated time. 8. The method of claim 7 further including selecting the single model from among two or more models, including the first model and the second model. 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first model is computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during previous time intervals in which the HVAC system was controlled to change the ambient temperature. 10. The method of claim 8 wherein the second model is computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during the current time interval. 11. The method of claim 8 wherein computing the aggregate estimated time from the first estimated time and the second estimated time further comprises multiplying the first estimated time by a first weighting factor to produce a first product;multiplying the second estimated time by a second weighting factor to produce a second product; andadding the two products to generate the aggregate estimated time. 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the sum of the first weighting factor and the second weighting factor is 1. 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the first weighting factor is initially set to a larger value than the second weighting factor and wherein, during the current time interval, the first weighting factor is incrementally decreased while the second weighting factor is correspondingly incrementally increased. 14. The method of claim 7 further including: initially selecting, as a current model, a single model computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during previous time intervals in which the HVAC system was controlled to change the ambient temperature; andsubsequently, at intervals, selecting, as a next current model, one of an aggregate model or a single model for the change in temperature with respect to time during control by the HVAC system. 15. The method of claim 13 wherein subsequently, at intervals, selecting, as the next current model, one of an aggregate model or a single model for the change in temperature with respect to time during control by the HVAC system further comprises: recording temperature-versus-time data points while the current model is used to compute the estimated time that represents a time remaining for the ambient temperature to reach the target;computing a fit of the current model to the recorded temperature-versus-time data points;when the computed fit indicates that discrepancies between the recorded temperature-versus-time data points and temperature-versus-time data points calculated from the current model are less than a threshold, selecting the current model as the next current model; andwhen the computed fit indicates that discrepancies between the recorded temperature-versus-time data points and temperature-versus-time data points calculated from the current model are greater than a threshold, selecting, as the next current model, an aggregate model as the next current model. 16. The method of claim 14 wherein computing a fit of the current model to the recorded temperature-versus-time data points comprises: setting a total sum to 0; andfor each of a number of recorded temperature-versus-time data points, computing a relative temperature change for the time value of the recorded temperature-versus-time data points from the current model, subtracting, from a relative temperature change determined from the time value of the recorded temperature-versus-time data points, the computed relative temperature change to produce a difference, squaring the difference, dividing the squared difference by the computed relative temperature change to produce a relative difference, andadding the relative difference to the total sum. 17. The method of claim 15 wherein the aggregate model selected as the next current model comprises the current model and a different model with a computed fit to the recorded temperature-versus-time data points less than the threshold value. 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the different model is selected from among a number of models, including models computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during previous time intervals in which the HVAC system was controlled to change the ambient temperature and models computed from measured temperature changes with respect to time recorded during the current time interval. 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the different model is selected from among a number of models by: first selecting a set of candidate models based on data collected during time periods with characteristics similar to characteristics of the current time interval; andselecting, from among the candidate models, a model with a computed fit that indicates that the model fits the recorded temperature-versus-time data points better than the other candidate models;wherein the characteristics include one or more of an initial temperature of the current time interval;the current weather;the current time of day; andthe current month. 20. A method for controlling an HVAC system, comprising: controlling the HVAC system over a current HVAC cycle to cause an ambient temperature to change from an initial temperature to a target temperature; andduring at least a portion of the current HVAC cycle, computing an estimated time remaining for the ambient temperature to reach the target temperature and displaying said estimated time remaining on a user display;wherein said computing the estimated time remaining comprises: accessing first information representative of a first model that characterizes, based on a number of previous HVAC cycles of the HVAC system being controlled, a statistical relationship between previous temperature changes achieved during the previous HVAC cycles and time durations that were required to achieve the changes;computing second information representative of a second model that characterizes, based on a current plurality of temperature measurements acquired during the current HVAC cycle, a current temperature-versus-time trajectory being achieved by the HVAC system during the current HVAC cycle; andgenerating said estimated time remaining based on a weighted combination of said first information and said second information. 21. The method of claim 20, said weighted combination being characterized in that said estimated time remaining is influenced more heavily by said first information than said second information during an initial portion of said current HVAC cycle, said weighted combination being further characterized in that said estimated time remaining is influenced more heavily by said second information than said first information during a final portion of said current HVAC cycle.
