An interior mirror system for a vehicle includes an interior rearview mirror assembly and a display element disposed within a mirror housing and behind the mirror reflective element. Information displayed by the display element, when backlit by a plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, is viewable through the reflective element. The control is operable to vary the intensity of information displayed by the display element as viewed through the reflective element by the driver of the vehicle. When the display element is backlit during daytime lighting conditions, the control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to at least about 1,000 cd/m2 as viewed through the reflective element by the driver of the vehicle. The interior rearview mirror assembly may include circuitry that shares components with the control and at least one other electrically operable feature of the interior rearview mirror assembly.

An interior mirror system suitable for use in a vehicle, said interior mirror system comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly, said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a mirror support, said mirror support comprising a mirror mount configured for attachment at an interior portion of a vehicle equipped with said interior rearview mirror assembly;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a housing and a reflective element, said reflective element comprising a mirror reflector;wherein said mirror support comprises a pivot element and wherein the rearward field of view of said reflective element is pivotally adjustable via adjustment of said housing about said pivot element when said interior rearview mirror assembly is attached by said mirror support at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;a display element disposed within said housing and behind said reflective element, wherein said display element is backlit by a plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes;wherein information displayed by said display element, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, is viewable through said reflective element by a driver of the equipped vehicle viewing said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly when said interior rearview mirror assembly is normally mounted at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a control and wherein said control is responsive to a photo sensor and operable to distinguish between daytime and nighttime lighting conditions;wherein said control is operable to vary the intensity of information displayed by said display element as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle;wherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during daytime lighting conditions, said control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to at least about 1,000 cd/m2 as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle; andwherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises circuitry and wherein said circuitry shares components with said control and at least one other electrically operable feature of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 2. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said display element is operable to display indicia. 3. The interior mirror system of claim 2, wherein said indicia comprises at least one of (i) an alpha-numeric display, (ii) a symbolic display and (iii) an iconistic display. 4. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said display element is operable to display information comprising at least one of engine coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level status, battery condition, battery voltage, cellular phone operation, E-Mail message receipt, compass heading information, temperature information, tire inflation status, passenger air bag disable status, an automatic rain sensor operation, highway status information and a clock function. 5. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said display element comprises a reconfigurable display element. 6. The interior mirror system of claim 5, wherein said reconfigurable display element is operable, responsive to an input, to display an alert to the driver of the vehicle. 7. The interior mirror system of claim 6, wherein said alert comprises at least one of a traffic warning, a vehicle blind spot presence detection, an engine operation change, a compass heading change and an incoming cellular phone call. 8. The interior mirror system of claim 6, wherein said reconfigurable display element is operable to override existing display information to display said alert responsive to said input. 9. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during nighttime lighting conditions, said control is operable to reduce the intensity of displayed information to a reduced level as compared to the intensity of displayed information during daytime lighting conditions. 10. The interior mirror system of claim 9, wherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during nighttime lighting conditions, said control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to less than about 10 cd/m2. 11. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said display element comprises a multi-pixel liquid crystal display element. 12. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises at least one accessory comprising at least one of a camera, a remote keyless entry receiver, a compass sensor, a seat occupancy detection sensor, one or more map reading lights, a trip computer and an intrusion detector, and wherein said circuitry shares at least one component with said at least one accessory. 13. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises an imaging sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor comprises one of a CMOS sensor and a CCD sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor is disposed at a portion of said interior rearview mirror assembly that is not adjusted when the driver of the equipped vehicle adjusts the rearward field of view of said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 14. The interior mirror system of claim 13, wherein, responsive to sensing of at least one of an oncoming headlight of another vehicle and a taillight of another vehicle by said imaging sensor, said control at least partially controls a headlight of the equipped vehicle. 15. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said mirror support is configured to accommodate a rain sensor when said mirror mount of said mirror support is attached at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle. 16. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said mirror mount of said mirror support is configured to attach to a windshield mounting button at an in-cabin surface of the windshield of the equipped vehicle and wherein, when said mirror mount is attached to the windshield mounting button, a rain sensor is accommodated by at least one of (i) said mirror support and (ii) the windshield mounting button. 17. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises at least one of (i) a rolling code garage door opener, (ii) a microphone, (iii) a light and wherein said light comprises at least one white light-emitting light emitting diode, (iv) a console light, and (v) a compass sensor that is disposed in said housing and that moves with said housing when the driver adjusts said housing to adjust a rearward field of view of said reflective element. 18. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said reflective element comprises an electrochromic reflective element. 19. The interior mirror system of claim 18, wherein said circuitry comprises components of an automatic mirror dimming control of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 20. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said reflective element comprises a prismatic day/night mirror reflective element. 21. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein the intensity of information displayed by said display element is varied via pulse-width modulation. 22. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein information displayed by said display element is provided on demand to the driver of the equipped vehicle. 23. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said circuitry comprises a component of an intelligent highway system. 24. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said photo sensor is part of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 25. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a single pivot joint, said single pivot joint comprising said pivot element, and wherein said mirror head pivotally attaches to said mirror support via said single pivot joint. 26. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said mirror support of said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a first pivot joint and a second pivot joint, and wherein said first pivot joint comprises said pivot element, and wherein said mirror head is pivotally adjustable about said first and second pivot joints when said interior rearview mirror assembly is attached by said mirror support at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle. 27. The interior mirror system of claim 1, wherein said reflective element comprises a glass substrate and wherein said mirror reflector comprises a metallic reflective coating established at a surface of said glass substrate. 28. An interior mirror system suitable for use in a vehicle, said interior mirror system comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly, said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a mirror support, said mirror support comprising a mirror mount configured for attachment at an interior portion of a vehicle equipped with said interior rearview mirror assembly;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a housing and a reflective element, said reflective element comprising a mirror reflector;wherein said mirror support comprises a pivot element and wherein the rearward field of view of said reflective element is pivotally adjustable via adjustment of said housing about said pivot element when said interior rearview mirror assembly is attached by said mirror support at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;a display element disposed within said housing and behind said reflective element, wherein said display element is backlit by a plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, and wherein said display element comprises a reconfigurable multi-pixel liquid crystal display element;wherein information displayed by said display element, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, is viewable through said reflective element by a driver of the equipped vehicle viewing said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly when said interior rearview mirror assembly is normally mounted at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a control and wherein said control is responsive to a photo sensor and operable to distinguish between daytime and nighttime lighting conditions;wherein said control is operable to vary the intensity of information displayed by said display element as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle; andwherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during daytime lighting conditions, said control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to at least about 1,000 cd/m2 as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle. 29. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein said display element is operable to display at least one of (i) an alpha-numeric display, (ii) a symbolic display and (iii) an iconistic display. 30. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein said reconfigurable display element is operable, responsive to an input, to display an alert to the driver of the vehicle. 31. The interior mirror system of claim 30, wherein said reconfigurable display element is operable to override existing display information to display said alert responsive to said input. 32. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during nighttime lighting conditions, said control is operable to reduce the intensity of displayed information to a reduced level as compared to the intensity of displayed information during daytime lighting conditions. 33. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises an imaging sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor comprises one of a CMOS sensor and a CCD sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor is disposed at a portion of said interior rearview mirror assembly that is not adjusted when the driver of the equipped vehicle adjusts the rearward field of view of said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 34. The interior mirror system of claim 33, wherein, responsive to sensing of at least one of an oncoming headlight of another vehicle and a taillight of another vehicle by said imaging sensor, said control at least partially controls a headlight of the equipped vehicle. 35. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein said mirror support is configured to accommodate a rain sensor when said mirror mount of said mirror support is attached at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle. 36. The interior mirror system of claim 28, wherein said mirror mount of said mirror support is configured to attach to a windshield mounting button at an in-cabin surface of the windshield of the equipped vehicle and wherein, when said mirror mount is attached to the windshield mounting button, a rain sensor is accommodated by at least one of (i) said mirror support and (ii) the windshield mounting button. 37. An interior mirror system suitable for use in a vehicle, said interior mirror system comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly, said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a mirror support, said mirror support comprising a mirror mount configured for attachment at an interior portion of a vehicle equipped with said interior rearview mirror assembly;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a housing and a reflective element, said reflective element comprising a mirror reflector, and wherein said reflective element comprises an electrochromic reflective element;wherein said mirror support comprises a pivot element and wherein the rearward field of view of said reflective element is pivotally adjustable via adjustment of said housing about said pivot element when said interior rearview mirror assembly is attached by said mirror support at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises an imaging sensor;a display element disposed within said housing and behind said reflective element, wherein said display element is backlit by a plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, and wherein said display element comprises a reconfigurable multi-pixel liquid crystal display element;wherein information displayed by said display element, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, is viewable through said reflective element by a driver of the equipped vehicle viewing said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly when said interior rearview mirror assembly is normally mounted at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a control and wherein said control is responsive to a photo sensor and operable to distinguish between daytime and nighttime lighting conditions;wherein said control is operable to vary the intensity of information displayed by said display element as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle; andwherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during daytime lighting conditions, said control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to at least about 1,000 cd/m2 as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle. 38. The interior mirror system of claim 37, wherein said circuitry comprises components of an automatic mirror dimming control of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 39. The interior mirror system of claim 37, wherein said imaging sensor comprises one of a CMOS sensor and a CCD sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor is disposed at a portion of said interior rearview mirror assembly that is not adjusted when the driver of the equipped vehicle adjusts the rearward field of view of said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 40. The interior mirror system of claim 37, wherein, responsive to sensing of at least one of an oncoming headlight of another vehicle and a taillight of another vehicle by said imaging sensor, said control at least partially controls a headlight of the equipped vehicle. 41. An interior mirror system suitable for use in a vehicle, said interior mirror system comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly, said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a mirror support, said mirror support comprising a mirror mount configured for attachment at a windshield mounting button at an in-cabin surface of the windshield of a vehicle equipped with said interior rearview mirror assembly;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a housing and a reflective element, said reflective element comprising a mirror reflector;wherein said mirror support comprises a pivot element and wherein the rearward field of view of said reflective element is pivotally adjustable via adjustment of said housing about said pivot element when said interior rearview mirror assembly is attached by said mirror support at the windshield mounting button of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a single pivot joint, said single pivot joint comprising said pivot element, and wherein said mirror head pivotally attaches to said mirror support via said single pivot joint;a display element disposed within said housing and behind said reflective element, wherein said display element comprises a multi-pixel liquid crystal display element backlit by a plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes;wherein information displayed by said display element, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes, is viewable through said reflective element by a driver of the equipped vehicle viewing said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly when said interior rearview mirror assembly is normally mounted at the windshield mounting button of the equipped vehicle;wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a control;wherein said control is operable to vary the intensity of information displayed by said display element as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle;wherein, when said display element is backlit by said plurality of white light-emitting light emitting diodes during daytime lighting conditions, said control is operable to adjust the intensity of displayed information to at least about 1,000 cd/m2 as viewed through said reflective element by the driver of the equipped vehicle; andwherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises an imaging sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor comprises one of a CMOS sensor and a CCD sensor, and wherein said imaging sensor is disposed at a portion of said interior rearview mirror assembly that is not adjusted when the driver of the equipped vehicle adjusts the rearward field of view of said reflective element of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 42. The interior mirror system of claim 41, wherein, responsive to sensing of at least one of an oncoming headlight of another vehicle and a taillight of another vehicle by said imaging sensor, said control at least partially controls a headlight of the equipped vehicle. 43. The interior mirror system of claim 41, wherein the intensity of information displayed by said display element is varied via pulse-width modulation. 44. The interior mirror system of claim 41, wherein information displayed by said display element is provided on demand to the driver of the equipped vehicle. 45. The interior mirror system of claim 41, wherein said reflective element comprises an electrochromic reflective element, and wherein circuitry of said interior rearview mirror assembly shares components with said control and an automatic mirror dimming control of said interior rearview mirror assembly. 47. The interior mirror system of claim 41, wherein, when said mirror mount is attached to the windshield mounting button, a rain sensor is accommodated by at least one of (i) said mirror support and (ii) the windshield mounting button.
