An novel impedance sensor for use together with a switch is provided having a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines configured to transmit a signal into a surface of a proximally located object, and also a plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines oriented substantially perpendicular to the drive lines and separated from the pickup lines by a dielectric to form intrinsic electrode pairs that are impedance sensitive at each of the drive and pickup crossover locations.

An impedance sensor, comprising: a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines configured to transmit a signal to a proximally located object; anda plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines configured to receive a resultant signal and oriented substantially perpendicular to the drive lines and physically separated from the drive lines on a different layer by a substantially incompressible dielectric located between the drive lines and pickup lines to form a sensing area having a two dimensional array of intrinsic electrode pairs that are impedance sensitive to detect ridge and valley features of a finger proximally located with respect to at least a portion of the sensing area;a circuit located outside the sensing area and configured to: operate in a first security mode by sequentially activating individual ones of all of the substantially parallel drive lines, grounding drive lines that are adjacent to the activated drive line, and detecting one or more signals on one or more of the plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines, andoperate in a second security mode by sequentially activating only every other one of the plurality of substantially parallel drive lines, grounding drive lines that are adjacent to the activated drive line, and detecting a signal on only every other one of the plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines; anddetermine ridge and valley features of the proximally located finger based on the detected one or more signals. 2. A system The impedance sensor according to claim 1, wherein the impedance sensor is incorporated in a mobile telephone, the impedance sensor further comprising a selection switch formed under the two dimensional array to enable the impedance sensor to both capture fingerprint data and perform a selection function on the mobile telephone in response to a finger contacting the two dimensional array, wherein the selection switch is further configured to allow a user to actuate the selection switch simultaneously while contacting the sensor. 3. The impedance sensor according to claim 2, wherein the selection switch is further configured to allow a user to depress the selection switch simultaneously while contacting the sensor. 4. The impedance sensor according to claim 2, wherein the selection switch is further configured to allow a user to press the selection switch simultaneously while contacting the sensor. 5. The impedance sensor according to claim 2, wherein the selection switch and two-dimensional array are further configured to allow a user to contact the selection switch to provide power to the impedance sensor and to initiate a user validation sequence that authenticates a user fingerprint against one or more previously stored fingerprints in memory to determine whether to grant user access to the device. 6. A sensor mounting system, comprising: a mounting module configured to hold a two-dimensional fingerprint placement sensor having a two-dimensional fingerprint placement sensor array having:a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines configured to transmit a signal to a proximally located object; anda plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines configured to receive a signal and oriented substantially perpendicular to the plurality of substantially parallel drive lines and located on a separate layer from the drive lines and physically separated from the drive lines by a substantially incompressible dielectric located between the drive lines and pickup lines to prevent physical contact between the pickup lines and the drive lines, wherein the drive lines and the pickup lines form a sensing area having a two dimensional array of intrinsic electrode pairs that are impedance sensitive to ridge and valley features of a finger proximally located with respect to at least a portion of the sensing area;a circuit located outside the sensing area and configured to: operate in a first security mode by sequentially activating all of the substantially parallel drive lines and grounding drive lines that are adjacent to the activated drive line, and detecting one or more signals on one or more of the plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines, andoperate in a second security mode by sequentially activating only every other one of the plurality of substantially parallel drive lines, grounding drive lines that are adjacent to the activated drive line, and detecting a signal on only every other one of the plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines; andacquire a fingerprint image of the proximally located finger based on the one or more signals. 7. The sensor mounting system according to claim 6, wherein the mounting module includes a bezel configured with an indenture and that is mounted over a substantially planar sensor. 8. The sensor mounting system according to claim 6, wherein the mounting module includes a bezel configured with an indenture and that is mounted over a sensor. 9. The impedance sensor of claim 1, wherein the drive lines and the pickup lines are disposed on a single flexible dielectric substrate that is folded back to back with the single flexible dielectric substrate interior to a fold in such a way that the single flexible dielectric substrate becomes an insulating layer separating the drive lines and the pickup lines. 10. The impedance sensor of claim 1, wherein the circuit is configured to detect the one or more signals by sequentially connecting individual ones of the plurality of pickup lines to a detector and grounding pickup lines that are adjacent to the connected pickup line. 11. The impedance sensor of claim 10, wherein the plurality of pickup lines includes a reference pickup line, and wherein the detector is a differential amplifier configured to determine a difference between a signal on the connected pickup line and a reference signal on the reference pickup line. 12. The impedance sensor of claim 11, further comprising a bandpass filter connected to the differential amplifier and tuned to a carrier frequency of a signal on one of the plurality of drive lines. 13. The sensor mounting system of claim 6, wherein the drive lines and the pickup lines are disposed on a single flexible dielectric substrate that is folded hack to back with the single flexible dielectric substrate interior to a fold in such a way that the single flexible dielectric substrate becomes an insulating layer separating the drive lines and the pickup lines. 14. The sensor mounting system of claim 6, wherein the circuit is configured to detect the one or more signals by sequentially connecting individual ones of the plurality of pickup lines to a detector and grounding pickup lines that are adjacent to the connected pickup line. 15. The sensor mounting system of claim 14, wherein the plurality of pickup lines includes a reference pickup line, and wherein the detector is a differential amplifier configured to determine a difference between a signal on the connected pickup line and a reference signal on the reference pickup line. 16. The sensor mounting system of claim 15, further comprising a bandpass filter connected to the differential amplifier and tuned to a carrier frequency of a signal on one of the plurality of drive lines.
