Surgical instruments are disclosed. Various non-limiting embodiments may include an elongated shaft that has a distal end portion that is configured to operably support a circular staple cartridge therein. A tissue acquisition shaft may be rotatably supported within said elongated shaft and have a distal portion that protrudes distally beyond the distal end portion of the elongated shaft. At least one tissue acquisition member may be pivotally attached to the distal end portion of the tissue acquisition shaft such that the tissue acquisition members are selectively pivotable from a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto. A rotatable cutting member may be operably supported adjacent to the tissue acquisition member and being selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion thereto.

A surgical instrument comprising: an elongated shaft defining a central axis and having a distal end portion configured to operably support a circular staple cartridge therein;a tissue acquisition shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft and having a distal portion that protrudes dis
1. A surgical instrument comprising: an elongated shaft defining a central axis and having a distal end portion configured to operably support a circular staple cartridge therein;a tissue acquisition shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft and having a distal portion that protrudes distally beyond the distal end portion of the elongated shaft;at least two tissue acquisition members pivotally attached to said distal portion of the tissue acquisition shaft such that said tissue acquisition members are selectively simultaneously pivotable from a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto;a rotatable cutting member operably supported adjacent to said tissue acquisition members; anda rotary actuator operably interfacing with said rotatable cutting member such that the rotatable cutting member is selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion to said rotary actuator. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 further comprising a deployment member operably supported within said elongated shaft and operably interfacing with each said tissue acquisition member, said deployment member configured to receive said deployment actuation motion to cause said tissue acquisition members to simultaneously move between said retracted and deployed positions. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 wherein said deployment member comprises a deployment shaft extending through said elongated shaft and being selectively rotatably movable relative thereto, said deployment shaft in meshing engagement with each of said tissue acquisition members such that rotation of said deployment shaft in one direction about the central axis causes said tissue acquisition members to pivot from said retracted position to a deployed position and rotation of said deployment shaft in an opposite direction about said central axis causes said tissue acquisition members to pivot from said deployed position to said retracted position. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 further comprising a drive gear on a distal end of said deployment shaft in meshing engagement with a driven gear on each said tissue acquisition member. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 further comprising a knife shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft, said knife shaft having a distal end coupled to said rotatable cutting member and being configured to receive said cutting actuation motion to cause said rotatable cutting member to rotate about said central axis. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 wherein each one of said at least one tissue acquisition members has a tissue-piercing tip. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 further comprising an annular cutting member that operably supported by said distal end portion of said elongated shaft for selective axial travel relative thereto. 8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 wherein said at least two tissue acquisition members comprise four tissue acquisition members that each have an arcuate shaped body such that when the tissue acquisition members are in the retracted position, said tissue acquisition members form a substantially continuous circular disc assembly at the distal portion of said tissue acquisition shaft adjacent said rotatable cutting member. 9. The surgical instrument of claim 5 wherein said cutting member comprises a planar blade having at least one cutting edge formed thereon. 10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 wherein said planar blade has diametrically opposed points formed thereon. 11. A surgical instrument comprising: a handle assembly;an elongated shaft protruding from said handle assembly and defining a central axis, said elongated shaft terminating in a stapler head comprising: a circular staple cartridge having a fastener face; andan axially movable cutting member;a firing member operably supported in said elongated shaft and oriented to apply a firing motion to said circular staple cartridge;an anvil shaft assembly operably supported within said elongated shaft and configured to receive actuation motions from said handle assembly to cause said anvil shaft assembly to move axially within said elongated shaft such that a distal connection portion thereof moves axially relative to said fastener face;an anvil removably attachable to said distal connection portion of said anvil shaft assembly;a tissue acquisition shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft;a plurality of tissue acquisition members pivotally attached to a distal end portion of the tissue acquisition shaft and being selectively pivotable between a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto; anda rotatable cutting member operably supported adjacent to said tissue acquisition members and being selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion thereto. 12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 wherein each said tissue acquisition member has a tissue piercing acquisition tip formed thereon.
