A composite material is produced from carpet waste and a binding agent, in intimate association, and may also include wood fiber or chips and/or other additives. A method of manufacturing a composite material includes shredding carpet waste, coating the carpet waste with a binding agent, and subjecting the shredded, coated carpet waste to elevated heat and pressure. As an additional step, the composite material may be actively cooled to prevent deformation of the material.

1. A composite building material comprising: from about 20% to about 98% carpet waste, by weight of the composite;from about 0% to about 25% fire retardant, by weight of the composite;from about 0% to about 25% colorant, by weight of the composite;from about 0% to about 50% inorganic filler, by weight of the composite;from about 0% to about 50% fiberglass in addition to any inorganic filler, by weight of the composite; andfrom about 2% to about 20% binding agent, by weight of the composite,in intimate association with the carpet waste and any fire retardant, colorant, inorganic filler, and fiberglass, the binding agent selected from the group consisting of methylenedipheyldiisocyanate (MDI), urea formaldehyde (UF), melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), and phenol formaldehyde (PF),wherein the composite building material comprises an external surface comprising at least one surface feature selected from the group consisting of a molded patterned surface, an embossed patterned surface, and a hot-stamped layer. 2. A method of manufacturing a composite building material, the method comprising the steps of: providing a carpet waste;mixing the carpet waste with a binding agent to produce a carpet waste mixture, the binding agent selected from the group consisting of methylenedipheyldiisocyanate (MDI), urea formaldehyde (UF), melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), and phenol formaldehyde (PF);applying heat and pressure to the carpet waste and the binding agent to form the composite building material; andadding at least one surface feature to an external surface of the composite building material, the at least one surface feature selected from the group consisting of a molded patterned surface, an embossed patterned surface, and a hot-stamped layer, wherein the composite building material comprises, by weight of the composite, from about 20% to about 98% carpet waste, from about 0% to about 25% fire retardant, from about 0% to about 25% colorant, from about 0% to about 50% inorganic filler, from about 0% to about 50% fiberglass in addition to any inorganic filler, and from about 2% to about 20% binding agent. 3. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the binding agent comprises MDI and water. 4. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the at least one surface feature comprises the embossed patterned surface. 5. The composite building material of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a coating, a primer, a paint, a stain, a foil laminate, a film laminate, and a sanded surface. 6. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material is selected from the group consisting of a board, building siding, roofing, and fencing. 7. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises the fire retardant. 8. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises the colorant. 9. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises the inorganic filler in addition to any filler present within the carpet waste. 10. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises the fiberglass. 11. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material is characterized by an absence of natural fiber. 12. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises a multi-layered board. 13. The composite building material of claim 1, wherein the composite building material comprises a sheet having a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface defining a thickness, the sheet comprising a substantially homogeneous mixture from the first surface across the thickness to the second surface. 14. The method of claim 2, wherein the binding agent comprises MDI and water. 15. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one surface feature comprises the embossed patterned surface. 16. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises at least one of a coating, a primer, a paint, a stain, a foil laminate, a film laminate, and a sanded surface. 17. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material is selected from the group consisting of a board, building siding, roofing, and fencing. 18. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises the fire retardant. 19. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises the colorant. 20. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises the inorganic filler in addition to any filler present within the carpet waste. 21. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises the fiberglass. 22. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material is characterized by an absence of natural fiber. 23. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises a multi-layered board. 24. The method of claim 2, wherein the composite building material comprises a sheet having a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface defining a thickness, the sheet comprising a substantially homogeneous mixture from the first surface across the thickness to the second surface.
