Vehicle including a seat support structure, a cushion arranged thereon and having an upper surface for supporting an occupying item and that deflects downward as a function of weight of the occupying item, and a sensor system including a force-measuring device that responds to downward deflection of the cushion. An interrogator sends a signal to the force-measuring device and the force-measuring device transmits, after receipt of the signal from the interrogator, a return signal to the interrogator related to the response of the force-measuring device to the downward deflection of the cushion. In a method for obtaining an indication of weight of an occupying item of the seat, a signal is transmitted from the interrogator on the vehicle to the force-measuring device and from the force-measuring device, the transmitted return signal related to the response of the force-measuring device to the downward deflection of the cushion is received.

1. A vehicle, comprising: a seat support structure;a cushion arranged on said seat support structure, said cushion having an upper surface for supporting an occupying item, said cushion being configured to deflect downward as a function of weight of the occupying item;a sensor system comprising a force-measuring device configured to respond to downward deflection of said cushion and an antenna coupled to said force-measuring device, wherein the force-measuring device includes a cable that deflects downward when weight is placed on the upper seat surface; andan interrogator configured to send a signal to said force measuring device that is received by said antenna and conveyed through said antenna to said force-measuring device, said force measuring device sensor system being configured to transmit via said antenna, after receipt of said signal from said interrogator, a return signal to said interrogator related to the response of said force-measuring device to the downward deflection of said cable and said cushion. 2. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising a processor that controls a component in the vehicle based on the return signal from said force-measuring device. 3. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said force-measuring device comprises a strain gage. 4. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said interrogator is further configured to provide power to said force-measuring device. 5. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the cable is coupled to a rod that moves in a housing in response to the downward deflection of the cable. 6. The vehicle of claim 5, wherein the force-measuring device transforms a change in the position of the rod relative to the housing into an electrical characteristic corresponding to the downward deflection of the cable and the cushion. 7. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the cable stretches axially in response to the downward deflection of the cushion. 8.
