A load transfer device is provided to connect concrete elements including, but not limited to, sandwich and double wall panel wythes, roof, floor, balcony and canopy members, and pavement. The device may be used to connect and transfer loads between the components of sandwich and double wall panels.

A load transfer device is provided to connect concrete elements including, but not limited to, sandwich and double wall panel wythes, roof, floor, balcony and canopy members, and pavement. The device may be used to connect and transfer loads between the components of sandwich and double wall panels. The device includes two load transfer members positioned at an angle with respect to one another. Additionally provided are a retention housing for retaining one or more load transfer members at their angled positions and a depth locating means for retaining one or more load transfer members at their proper depth. Also provided are sandwich wall panels and double wall panels employing the load transfer device and methods for manufacturing sandwich wall panels and double wall panels employing the disclosed load transfer device.

A retention housing in combination with a load transfer member connecting a first concrete element to at least a second concrete element, an insulation layer located between said first concrete element and said second concrete element, said retention housing received by said insulation layer; said retention housing having at least one retention member having a recessed portion corresponding in shape to receive and retain said load transfer member, wherein said load transfer member comprises a first end that extends into said first concrete element and a second end that extends into said second concrete element. 2. The retention housing of claim 1 further comprising a second retention member that sandwiches said load transfer member between said recessed portion and said second retention member. 3. The retention housing of claim 2 wherein said second retention member comprises a second recessed portion corresponding in shape to receive and retain a second load transfer member. 4. The retention housing of claim 3 wherein said first and second load transfer members extend outward in two opposite directions from said retention housing. 5. The retention housing of claim 2 wherein said first and second retention members are held together by a connecting means. 6. The retention housing of claim 5 wherein said connecting means is tape. 7. The retention housing of claim 1 wherein said retention housing comprises insulation. 8. The retention housing of claim 1 wherein the at least one retention member works in cooperation with a depth locating means to position and retain at least one load transfer member. 9. The retention housing of claim 8 wherein said depth locating means comprises: a first planar member having a first end and a second end;a first leg extending from said first end;a second leg extending from said second end;said first planar member having a cutout portion; said cutout portion receiving the at least one load transfer member. 10. A retention housing for a load transfer member connecting a first concrete element to at least a second concrete element comprising: an insulation layer located between said first concrete element and said second concrete element;said retention housing received by said insulation layer;at least one retention member having a recessed portion corresponding in shape to receive and retain a load transfer member;a depth locating means working in cooperation with said retention member to position and retain said at least one load transfer member comprising: a first planar member having a first end and a second end;a first leg extending from said first end;a second leg extending from said second end; andsaid planar member having a cutout portion receiving the at least one load transfer member, said cutout portion comprising: a tab protruding from the perimeter of said cutout portion wherein said tab is received by an indentation in said load transfer member. 11. A load transfer device connecting at least first and second concrete elements comprising: said first concrete element having a first surface closest to said second concrete element;said second concrete element having a first surface closest to said first concrete element;an insulation layer located between said first and second concrete elements;a load transfer member having a first end and a second end;a retention housing having a recessed portion corresponding in shape to receive and retain said load transfer member;said retention housing received by said insulation layer;a depth locator comprising: a first planar member having a first end and a second end;a first leg extending from said first end;a second leg extending from said second end; andsaid planar member having a cutout portion receiving the at least one load transfer member, said cutout portion comprising a tab protruding from the perimeter of said cutout portion wherein said tab is received by an indentation in said load transfer member;wherein said first load transfer member is positioned at an angle to the normal of said first surface of said first concrete element and at an angle to the normal of said first surface of said second concrete element;wherein said first end of said load transfer member is at least partially embedded in said first concrete element and said second end of said load transfer member is at least partially embedded in said second concrete element; andwherein said first and second ends of said first load transfer member are not in contact with any other load transfer members in said first and second concrete elements.
