A surgical instrument comprising: a handle assembly;an articulatable shaft assembly defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal portion protruding from said handle assembly, said proximal portion being pivotally coupled to a distal portion that is selectively pivotable relative to said proximal portion about a first axis that is substantially transverse to said longitudinal axis;a first articulation member coupled to said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly;a second articulation member coupled to said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly; andan articulation control member comprising an articulation ball movably supported by said handle assembly for selective pivotable and axial travel relative thereto, said articulation ball operably coupled to said first and second articulation members and configured to selectively apply pushing and pulling motions thereto such that when said articulation control member is moved to at least one first articulation control position, the articulation control member applies a first pulling motion to said first articulation member and a first pushing motion to said second articulation member to cause said distal portion to pivot about said first axis in a first direction and when said articulation control member is moved to at least one second articulation control position, the articulation control member applies a second pulling motion to said second articulation member and a second pushing motion to said first articulation member to cause said distal portion to pivot about said first axis in a second direction. 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 wherein said articulation control member is movable from a neutral position wherein said distal portion is in substantial coaxial alignment with said proximal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly to said at least one first and second articulation control positions. 3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 further comprising a locking arrangement on said articulation control member for releasably retaining said articulation control member in said neutral and said at least one first and second articulation control positions. 4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 wherein said articulatable shaft assembly is selectively rotatable about said longitudinal axis relative to said handle assembly. 5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 wherein said proximal shaft portion is attached to a rotation knob rotatably supported on said handle assembly and wherein said articulation ball is supported within a socket in said rotation knob. 6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 further comprising a plurality of locking detents formed on said articulation ball and configured to selectively engage a corresponding plurality of locking members on a portion of said socket to retain said articulation ball in any one of a neutral and said at least one first and second articulation control positions. 7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 further comprising a biasing member within said socket to bias at least one of said locking detents on said articulation ball into retaining engagement with at least some of said locking members. 8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 further comprising an end effector operably coupled to said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly and having a second jaw that is selectively movable relative to a first jaw upon application of firing motions thereto. 9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 wherein said proximal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly comprises: a proximal spine segment operably coupled to said handle assembly and protruding therefrom; anda proximal firing tube segment movably supported on said proximal spine segment and operably interfacing with a firing system operably supported by said handle assembly and wherein said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly comprises:a distal spine segment coupled to said proximal spine segment for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about said first axis; anda distal firing tube segment movably supported on said distal spine segment and configured to operably interface with said second jaw to apply said firing motions thereto and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises a flexible intermediate firing tube segment coupled to a distal end of said proximal firing tube segment and a proximal end of said distal firing tube segment. 10. A surgical instrument comprising: a handle assembly;an articulatable shaft assembly defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal portion protruding from said handle assembly and being pivotally coupled to a distal portion that is selectively pivotable relative to said proximal portion about a first axis that is substantially transverse to said longitudinal axis;at least one articulation member coupled to said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly;an articulation control member slidably supported in said handle assembly and coupled to said at least one articulation member and configured to selectively apply pushing and pulling motions thereto such that when said articulation control member is moved in a first axial direction, the articulation member pivots said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly about said first axis in a first articulation direction and when said articulation control member is moved in a second axial direction, the at least one articulation control member causes said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly to pivot about said first axis in a second articulation direction;a first articulation handle protruding from said articulation control member in a first direction; anda second articulation handle protruding from said articulation control member in a second direction that is diametrically opposite from said first direction. 11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 wherein said articulatable shaft assembly is selectively rotatable about said longitudinal axis relative to said handle assembly. 12. The surgical instrument of claim 10 further comprising an end effector operably coupled to said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly, said end effector having a second jaw that is selectively movable relative to a first jaw upon application of firing motions thereto. 13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 wherein said proximal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly comprises a proximal spine segment operably coupled to said handle assembly and protruding therefrom and wherein said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly comprises: a distal spine segment coupled to said proximal spine segment for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about said first axis; anda distal firing tube segment movably supported on said distal spine segment and configured to operably interface with said second jaw to apply said firing motions thereto and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises at least one firing member coupled to said distal firing tube segment and interfacing with a firing system supported by said handle assembly to selectively cause said at least one firing member to selectively activate said distal firing tube segment to apply said firing motions to said second jaw. 14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 wherein said proximal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly further comprises a knife control member operably interfacing with a cutting system supported by said handle assembly and wherein said distal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly further comprises a knife member coupled to said knife control member and being axially movable therein for axial travel within said end effector in response to a cutting advancement motion applied thereto by said knife control member. 15. The surgical instrument of claim 13 wherein said proximal portion of said articulatable shaft assembly further comprises a proximal cover tube that extends over a portion of said proximal spine segment and a flexible cover portion extending between said proximal cover tube and said distal firing tube segment. 16. A surgical instrument comprising: a handle assembly;a rotation knob rotatably supported on said handle assembly;an articulatable shaft assembly coupled to said rotation knob and defining a longitudinal axis, said articulatable shaft assembly comprising: a proximal spine segment coupled to said rotation knob and protruding therefrom;a distal spine segment pivotally coupled to said proximal spine segment for selective pivotable travel relative to said proximal spine segment about a first axis that is substantially transverse to said longitudinal axis;a proximal firing tube segment movably supported on said proximal spine segment, said proximal firing tube segment interfacing with said rotation knob such that said proximal firing tube segment may be rotated with said rotation knob relative to said handle assembly about said longitudinal axis and is axially movable relative to said rotation knob in response to firing actuation motions applied thereto by a firing control system operably supported in said handle assembly; anda distal firing tube segment movably supported on said distal spine segment and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises:a first articulation member coupled to said distal spine segment of said articulatable shaft assembly;a second articulation member coupled to said distal spine segment of said articulatable shaft assembly;an articulation ball movably supported in said rotation knob and coupled to said first and second articulation members, said articulation ball selectively movable from a neutral position wherein said articulation ball does not apply any articulation motions to said first and second articulation members to a first articulation control position wherein an articulation control member applies a first pulling motion to said first articulation member and a first pushing motion to said second articulation member to cause said distal spine segment to pivot about said first axis in a first direction and a second articulation control position wherein the articulation control member applies a second pulling motion to said second articulation member and a second pushing motion to said first articulation member to cause said distal spine segment to pivot about said first axis in a second direction;a first articulation handle protruding from said articulation ball in said first direction; anda second articulation handle protruding from said articulation ball in a second direction that is diametrically opposite from said first direction. 17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 further comprising an end effector operably coupled to said distal spine segment and having a second jaw that is selectively movable relative to a first jaw upon application of firing motions thereto by said distal firing tube segment. 18. The surgical instrument of claim 17 further comprising a knife bar having a tissue cutting edge formed thereon and being movably supported within said articulatable shaft assembly, said knife bar operably interfacing with a cutting system operably supported within said handle assembly to selectively cause said knife bar to move axially within said end effector. 19. The surgical instrument of claim 16 further comprising a plurality of locking detents formed on said articulation ball and configured to selectively engage a corresponding plurality of locking members on a portion of a socket in said rotation knob to retain said articulation ball in any one of said neutral and said at least one first and second articulation control positions. 20. The surgical instrument of claim 19 further comprising a biasing member within said socket to bias at least one of said locking detents on said articulation ball into retaining engagement with at least some of said locking members.
