Systems and methods for controlling a system of fans in a facility from a central system controller are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the system of fans can be configured to shut down automatically during an emergency condition or event. For example, a fan system controller can be connected to the system of fans and provide a signal to each of the fans. While each of the fans receives the signal, power is connected to a motor on each of the fans. Upon detection of an emergency condition, the fan system controller disconnects the signal to the fans, thereby automatically simultaneously shutting down the entire system of fans.

The fan system of claim 1 wherein the first link is an electrical link that electrically connects the fan system controller to the first facility fan. 3. The fan system of claim 1 wherein the first link is a wireless link that wirelessly connects the fan system controller to the first facility fan. 4. The fan system of claim 1 wherein the alarm system is a fire alarm system and wherein the emergency condition is a fire. 5. The fan system of claim 1 further comprising: at least a third facility fan connected to the second fan by a third link. 6. The fan system of claim 1 wherein the first fan and the second fan are high volume low speed facility fans. 7. The fan system of claim 1 further comprising: a relay disposed in the fan system controller, wherein the relay is configured to disconnect the second signal to the first fan in the absence of receiving the first signal from the alarm system. 8. A method of operating a plurality of facility fans in a facility having an alarm system, the method comprising: providing a fan system controller;operably connecting a first one of the plurality of facility fans to a second one of the plurality of facility fans; andoperably connecting the fan system controller to the first facility fan and the alarm system, wherein the alarm system is configured to transmit a first signal to the system controller during a non-emergency condition and to cease transmission of the first signal upon detection of an emergency condition, wherein the system controller is configured to transmit a second signal to the first facility fan when receiving the first signal from the alarm system, wherein the system controller is further configured to cease transmission of the second signal to the first facility fan in the absence of receiving the first signal from the alarm system, wherein transmitting the second signal to the first facility fan automatically operates the first and second facility fans, and wherein ceasing transmission of the second signal to the first facility fan automatically shuts down the first and second facility fans. 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the alarm system is a fire alarm system. 10. The method of claim 8, further comprising operably coupling the second fan to at least a third fan, wherein ceasing transmission of the second signal to the first facility fan automatically shuts down the third facility fan. 11. A facility fan system comprising: a first facility fan;a second facility fan communicatively coupled to the first facility fan;anda fan system controller communicatively coupled to the first facility fan and configured to— receive a first signal from an external signal source, wherein the external signal source is configured to transmit the first signal during a non-emergency condition and to cease transmission of the first signal upon detection of an emergency condition;transmit a second signal to the first facility fan when receiving the first signal; andcease transmission of the second signal to the first facility fan in the absence of receiving the first signal, wherein the first facility fan and the second facility fan are configured to automatically shut down when the first facility fan stops receiving the second signal. 12. The fan system of claim 11 wherein the external signal source is one of a fire alarm system, earthquake alarm system, tornado alarm system, or a combination thereof. 13. The fan system of claim 11 wherein the first fan, the second fan, and the third fan are configured to operate in a daisy chain configuration, wherein the controller is further configured to provide the second signal to the second fan and the third fan, wherein disconnecting the second signal to the first fan automatically disconnects the second signal to the second fan, and wherein disconnecting the second signal to the second fan automatically disconnects the second signal to the third fan. 14. The fan system of claim 11 wherein the fan system controller is configured to provide operating instructions to the first fan and the second fan, and configured to receive information from the first fan and the second fan. 15. The system of claim 11 wherein the first and second facility fans are configured to operate only if the second signal is received by the first facility fan. 16. A system for operating a plurality of fans in a facility having a fan system controller and an alarm system, the system comprising: means for receiving a first signal from the alarm system at the fan system controller, wherein the alarm system is configured to— transmit the first signal during a non-emergency condition, andcease transmission of the first signal upon detection of an emergency condition;means for providing a second signal from the fan system controller to a first one of the plurality of fans when the fan system controller is receiving the first signal from the alarm system;andmeans for interrupting the second signal in response to an interruption of the first signal, wherein the plurality of fans are configured to shut down in the absence of the second signal.
