In various embodiments, a surgical stapling instrument can include a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, wherein the shaft defines an axis, and a disposable loading unit which is assembled to the shaft in a direction which is transverse to the shaft axis. Such a connection between the disposable loading unit and the shaft can prevent, or at least inhibit, the disposable loading unit from being unintentionally displaced proximally and/or distally relative to the shaft of the surgical instrument. The surgical stapling instrument and/or disposable loading unit can further include a threaded collar and/or detent assembly configured to hold the disposable loading unit in place. In various embodiments, a disposable loading unit can include a lockout feature which can prevent, or at least inhibit, an expended disposable loading unit from being reassembled to the elongated body of the surgical instrument.

1. A disposable surgical stapling unit configured for use with an actuation device that has an elongated shaft assembly that defines an elongate axis and operably supports a control rod therein, the disposable surgical stapling unit comprising: a staple cartridge carrier configured to operably support a staple cartridge therein, said staple cartridge carrier having an end connector configured to be removably coupled to the elongated shaft assembly in a transverse direction that is substantially transverse to the elongate axis and be detached therefrom without disassembling the elongated shaft assembly, said end connector having a key member that is configured to engage a corresponding key member on the elongated shaft assembly such that when engaged together, said key members prevent relative axial movement between said disposable surgical stapling unit and the elongated shaft assembly;an anvil having at least one staple-deforming cavity therein, said anvil supported for pivotal travel relative to the staple cartridge carrier in response to closing and opening motions applied thereto by the elongated shaft assembly; anda drive member operably supported within said staple cartridge carrier, said drive member comprising: a cutting edge configured to incise tissue; anda proximal end configured for removable attachment to a distal end of the control rod in said transverse direction. 2. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 1, wherein said transverse direction is perpendicular to the elongate axis. 3. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 1, wherein the elongated shaft assembly includes at least one shaft groove and at least one shaft projection, wherein said end connector includes at least one connector groove and at least one connector projection, wherein said connector groove is configured to receive the shaft projection, and wherein said connector projection is configured to be positioned within the shaft groove. 4. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 1, wherein the elongated shaft assembly has a collar supported thereon for axial movement between a first position wherein said end connector is retained in engagement with the elongated shaft assembly and a second position wherein said end connector is detachable from the elongated shaft assembly. 5. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 4, wherein said end connector includes a threaded portion configured to threadably engage a portion of the collar when the collar is in said second position. 6. A disposable surgical stapling unit configured for use with an actuation device that has an elongated shaft assembly that defines an elongate axis and operably supports a control rod therein, the disposable surgical stapling unit comprising: a housing having an end connector configured to be removably coupled to the elongated shaft assembly in a transverse direction that is substantially transverse to the elongate axis and be detached therefrom without disassembling the elongated shaft assembly, said end connector having a key member that is configured to engage a corresponding key member on the elongated shaft assembly such that when engaged together, said key members prevent relative movement between said disposable surgical stapling unit and the elongated shaft assembly;a staple cartridge carrier configured to operably support a staple cartridge therein, said staple cartridge carrier pivotally coupled to said housing for selective pivotal travel relative thereto about a transverse axis that is substantially transverse to said elongate axis;a distal articulation link coupled to said staple cartridge carrier and configured for operable engagement with a shaft articulation link operably supported within the elongated shaft assembly in said transverse direction; anda drive member operably supported within said staple cartridge carrier, said drive member comprising: a cutting edge configured to incise tissue; anda proximal end configured to be assembled to a distal end of the control rod in said transverse direction. 7. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 6, wherein said transverse direction is perpendicular to the elongate axis. 8. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 7, wherein the elongated shaft assembly includes at least one shaft groove and at least one shaft projection, wherein said end connector includes at least one connector groove and at least one connector projection, wherein said connector groove is configured to receive the shaft projection, and wherein said connector projection is configured to be positioned within the shaft groove. 9. The disposable surgical stapling unit of claim 8, further comprising: a threaded portion on said end connector; anda collar having an at least partially threaded aperture configured to threadably engage the threaded portion on said end connector to retain the disposable surgical stapling unit to the elongated shaft assembly. 10. An assembly for use with a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument comprising an instrument frame, an instrument firing drive, and an instrument articulation drive, said assembly comprising: an end effector, comprising: a first jaw comprising a fastener cartridge support; anda second jaw comprising an anvil;a shaft frame, wherein said shaft frame comprises a shaft key portion configured to engage an instrument key portion of the instrument frame, wherein said shaft frame extends from the instrument frame along a longitudinal axis when said shaft frame is assembled to the instrument frame, wherein said shaft key portion and the instrument key portion are configured to limit relative movement along said longitudinal axis, and wherein said shaft frame is assembled to the instrument frame in a transverse direction which is substantially transverse to said longitudinal axis;an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said shaft frame about said articulation joint;a drive member, comprising: a cutting edge configured to incise tissue positioned intermediate said fastener cartridge channel and said anvil; anda proximal end configured to be assembled to the instrument firing drive in said transverse direction; andan articulation member, comprising: a distal end engaged with said end effector; anda proximal end configured to be assembled to the instrument articulation drive in said transverse direction.
