The method of claim 1, wherein the data comprises a map database and the component of the vehicle is a navigation system. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the map database comprises map database segments, each of the map database segments having an associated indication of its version. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the data is displayed on a heads-up or other display visible to an occupant of the vehicle. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein an indication of a location of the vehicle is also displayed on the heads-up or other display. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the data includes map data about roadways that the vehicle can travel on including a speed limit for the vehicle on the roadways. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the data includes at least one of data relating to traffic control devices, data relating to guard rails along roadways, data relating to inanimate objects including at least one of poles and trees alongside roadways, and data relating to locations of a boundary or edges of roadways and edges of lanes of roadways. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the data or software available for transmission is not received unless the condition is determined not to be satisfied. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating and transmitting the requests using the processor and the communication system based on location of the vehicle. 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising: ascertaining an assigned corridor of travel for the vehicle;determining a current position for the vehicle with position determining equipment located onboard the vehicle;determining that the vehicle has deviated from the assigned corridor of travel; andactivating an alert to warn an occupant of the vehicle that the vehicle has deviated from the assigned corridor of travel. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication of the version of the data or software comprises a time and date. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein said data storage device is not housed together with the at least one component of the vehicle and the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device in the vehicle is received by the data storage device while the vehicle is moving. 13. A vehicle, comprising: a data storage device including data or software for use or operation of at least one component of the vehicle;a processor that determines, during movement of the vehicle, when a condition relating to transmission of data or software to the vehicle is satisfied, the condition being whether said data storage device has current data or software for use or operation of a component of the vehicle; anda communications system that communicates with infrastructure separate and apart from the vehicle, said processor being configured to determine when the condition is satisfied by: receiving via said communications system on the vehicle and in response to transmission of requests via said communication system to infrastructure, an indication of a version of the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device from infrastructure; andcomparing the received indication of the version of the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device to a corresponding indication of the version of data or software currently in said data storage device to determine whether the data or software currently in said data storage device is the same as or more current than the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device;said communications system being configured, when the condition is determined not to be satisfied by said processor, to receive the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device while the data storage device is on the vehicle; andthe received data or software being included as a substitution for the corresponding currently existing data or software in said data storage device. 14. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the data comprises a map database and the component of the vehicle is a navigation system. 15. The vehicle of claim 14, wherein the map database comprises map database segments, each of the map database segments having an associated indication of its version. 16. The vehicle of claim 13, further comprising a heads-up or other display visible to an occupant of the vehicle for displaying a portion of the data. 17. The vehicle of claim 16, wherein said heads-up or other display is configured to display an indication of a location of the vehicle. 18. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the data or software includes map data about roadways that the vehicle can travel on including a speed limit for the vehicle on the roadways. 19. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the data includes at least one of data relating to traffic control devices, data relating to guard rails along roadways, data relating to inanimate objects including at least one of poles and trees alongside roadways, data relating to locations of a boundary or edges of roadways and edges of lanes of roadways. 20. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the data or software available for transmission is not received unless the condition is determined not to be satisfied. 21. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein said processor is configured to generate and transmits the requests based on location of the vehicle. 22. The vehicle of claim 13, further comprising: position determining equipment that determines a current position for the vehicle, said processor being further configured to ascertain an assigned corridor of travel for the vehicle, determine that the vehicle has deviated from the assigned corridor of travel based on the determined current position of the vehicle and the assigned corridor of travel, and activate an alert when the vehicle is determined to deviate from the assigned corridor of travel. 23. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the indication of the version of the data or software comprises a time and date. 24. The system of claim 13, wherein said data storage device is not housed together with the at least one component of the vehicle and the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device in the vehicle is received by the data storage device while the vehicle is moving. 25. A method for transferring data or software to a data storage device on a vehicle and which data storage device provides data or software for use or operation of at least one component of the vehicle, comprising: determining, during movement of the vehicle, when a condition relating to transmission of data or software to the vehicle is satisfied, the condition being whether the data storage device in the vehicle has current data or software for use or operation of a component of the vehicle, the step of determining when the condition is satisfied comprising: receiving via a communication system on the vehicle and in response to transmission of requests via the communication system to infrastructure separate and apart from the vehicle, a time-related indication of the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device from infrastructure; andcomparing, using a processor on the vehicle, the received time-related indication of the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device to a time-related indication of corresponding data or software currently in the data storage device to determine whether the data or software currently in the data storage device is the same as or more current than the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device; andwhen the condition is determined not to be satisfied, receiving the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device in the vehicle using the communication system and including the received data or software as a substitution for the corresponding currently existing data or software in the data storage device, the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device in the vehicle being received by the data storage device while the data storage device is on the vehicle. 26. A vehicle, comprising: a data storage device including data or software for use or operation of at least one component of the vehicle;a processor that determines, during movement of the vehicle, when a condition relating to transmission of data or software to the vehicle is satisfied, the condition being whether said data storage device has current data or software for use or operation of a component of the vehicle; anda communications system that communicates with infrastructure separate and apart from the vehicle, said processor being configured to determine when the condition is satisfied by: receiving via said communications system on the vehicle and in response to transmission of requests via said communication system to infrastructure, a time-related indication of the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device from infrastructure; andcomparing the received time-related indication of the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device to a time-related indication of corresponding data or software currently in said data storage device to determine whether the data or software currently in said data storage device is the same as or more current than the data or software available for transmission to said data storage device;said communications system being configured, when the condition is determined not to be satisfied by said processor, to receive the data or software available for transmission to the data storage device while the data storage device is on the vehicle; andthe received data or software being included as a substitution for the corresponding currently existing data or software in said data storage device.
