A composition is provided, which comprises a water-soluble salt of a divalent metal; a complexing agent having an affinity for the divalent metal; and an optical brightening agent. Methods of using the composition, and recording sheets which include the composition, are also disclosed.

The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the complexing agent is present in an amount ranging from about 0.01 Lb/ton of recording sheet to about 100 Lb/ton of recording sheet. 6. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the optical brightening agent is present in an amount ranging from about 0.005 to about 4 weight percent based on the weight of the recording sheet. 7. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the complexing agent is selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid salt, ethyleneglycoltetraacetic acid salt, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid salt, crown ether, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid trisodium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium magnesium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium calcium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid diammonium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dipotassium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tripotassium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dilithium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetramethylammonium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid calcium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid magnesium salt, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid aluminum salt, poly-4-styrene sulfonic acid salt, glycerol formal, formamidinesulinic acid, carboxylic acid, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-thiocyanate, alkyl imidazolium, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate, methyl imidazolium, salts thereof, or a combination thereof. 8. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the complexing agent comprises an ionic liquid and another complexing agent. 10. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the sizing agent comprises starch. 11. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the sizing agent is an external sizing agent or a combination of external and internal sizing agents. 12. The recording sheet of claim 1, wherein the salt is calcium halide, calcium nitrate, calcium chlorate, calcium perchlorate, calcium sulfate, calcium acetate, calcium carboxylate, calcium hydroxide, calcium nitrite, or a combination thereof. 13. A method for making a recording sheet, comprising: contacting a paper substrate comprising a plurality of cellulosic fibers; anda composition, comprising: a water-soluble salt of Ca(II);a complexing agent having an affinity for Ca(II);an optical brightening agent; anda sizing agent;wherein the optical brightening agent is present in an amount ranging from about 10 to 100 pounds per 100 pounds of sizing agent;to produce a recording sheet. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the contacting is carried out at a size press. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the contacting is carried out at a size press; and a dry pickup of the sizing agent is 0.25-6 gsm. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the complexing agent comprises polyethylene glycol. 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the complexing agent comprises an ionic liquid and another complexing agent. 18. The method of claim 13, wherein the composition is contacted with one side or both sides of the paper substrate. 19. A method, comprising: forming an image with a printing apparatus on a surface of a recording sheet, said recording sheet comprising:a paper substrate comprising a plurality of cellulosic fibers; anda composition, comprising: a water-soluble salt of Ca(II);a complexing agent having an affinity for Ca(II);an optical brightening agent; anda sizing agent;wherein the optical brightening agent is present in an amount ranging from about 10 to 100 pounds per 100 pounds of sizing agent. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the printing apparatus is an ink jet printer.
