Disclosed herein are systems and methods for a continuous analyte sensor, such as a continuous glucose sensor. One such system utilizes first and second working electrodes to measure analyte or non-analyte related signal, both of which electrode include an interference domain.

A sensor for continuously measuring a concentration of an analyte in a biological fluid, the sensor comprising: a substrate;a first conductive layer disposed over at least a portion of the substrate and comprising a first electrode, the first electrode comprising a first electroactive surface;a first insulating layer disposed over at least a portion of the first conductive layer;a second conductive layer disposed over at least a portion of the first insulating layer and comprising a second electrode, the second electrode comprising a second electroactive surface;a second insulating layer disposed over at least a portion of the second conductive layer, wherein the first electroactive surface and the second electroactive surface are separated by a distance such that diffusion of measured species between the first electroactive surface and the second electroactive surface is substantially reduced or eliminated; anda third conductive layer disposed over at least a portion of the second insulating layer and comprising a third electrode;wherein the first insulating layer is configured to provide insulation between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer, and wherein the second insulating layer is configured to provide insulation between the second conductive layer and the third conductive layer. 2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electroactive surface and the second electroactive surface are arranged in a staggered configuration along a longitudinal axis of the sensor. 3. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the distance is from about 0.02 inches to about 0.12 inches. 4. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electrode comprises a first electrical connector, wherein the second electrode comprises a second electrical connector, and wherein the first electrical connector and the second electrical connector are longitudinally spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the sensor. 5. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, or the third electrode is a reference electrode. 6. The sensor of claim 5, wherein the first electrode comprises a first electrical connector, wherein the second electrode comprises a second electrical connector, wherein the reference electrode comprises a third electrical connector, and wherein the first electrical connector, the second electrical connector, and the third electrical connector are longitudinally spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the sensor. 7. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electrode comprises a first wire and the second electrode comprises a second wire, wherein the first wire and the second wire both have a substantially cylindrical shape. 8. The sensor of claim 1, further comprising a membrane. 9. The sensor of claim 8, wherein the membrane comprises a layer configured to substantially restrict or block a flow of interfering species therethrough. 10. The sensor of claim 8, wherein the membrane comprises a layer configured to control a flux of oxygen and analyte therethrough. 11. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are arranged together in a parallel configuration. 12. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode comprises a plated wire. 13. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode comprises a wire that has a circular cross-sectional shape. 14. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the third electrode is distal to the second electrode with respect to the substrate. 15. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the second electrode is distal to the first electrode with respect to the substrate. 16. The sensor of claim 1, further comprising a third insulator disposed over at least a portion of the third conductive layer. 17. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electrode, second electrode, and third electrode are stepped along a length of the sensor, so that each electrode is exposed. 18. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first electrode, the second electrode, and the third electrode are not positioned directly above each other. 19. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the second electrode is at least one of a reference electrode or a counter electrode. 20. The sensor of claim 19, wherein the third electrode is at least one of a reference electrode or a counter electrode.
