A energy transfer device (10) is provided that is capable of transferring the energy output from one pyrotechnic device (52) to another device (78) for initiating firing thereof. Device (10) comprises a device housing (12) in which a deformable device insert (14) is received. Device insert (14) comprises a central passageway (34) for transmitting the output from a pyrotechnic device (52), including energy, gasses, and/or solids, to another pyrotechnic device (78). The passageway (34) conducts the pyrotechnic device output to a precise location on the second pyrotechnic device (78) where firing is most effectively initiated. The energy transfer device (10) may be employed as a part of a tool (44) used in well completion operations.

1. A method of igniting a pyrotechnic charge downhole in a well comprising: providing a first pyrotechnic device, an energy transfer device, and a second pyrotechnic device, said energy transfer device comprising a metallic body having a forward section, an aft section, and an axial passageway extending therethrough;igniting said first pyrotechnic device to detonate an output charge; anddirecting at least a portion of the energy from the detonation of said output charge through said axial passageway toward said second pyrotechnic device thereby igniting said second pyrotechnic device, wherein said first output charge deforms at least a portion of said energy transfer device forward section resulting in the formation of a constriction in said passageway, and wherein said first output charge results in the generation of hot gases and/or solid material at least a portion of which are directed through said passageway and said constriction toward said second pyrotechnic device. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said first pyrotechnic device comprises a first time delay fuse. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said second pyrotechnic device comprises an explosive charge. 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said second pyrotechnic device comprises a second time delay fuse. 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said first pyrotechnic device comprises a firing head. 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said passageway comprises a first segment extending through said body forward section and a second segment extending through said body aft section. 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein said at least a portion of the energy from the detonation of said output charge deforms said body forward section thereby narrowing the diameter of at least a portion of said passageway first segment. 8. The method according to claim 6, wherein said passageway first segment has a diameter, prior to igniting said first pyrotechnic device, that is less than the diameter of said passageway second segment. 9. The method according to claim 6, wherein said passageway first segment has a length that is less than the length of said passageway aft section. 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein said body forward and aft sections are generally cylindrical, said forward section having a larger outside diameter than said second section. 11. The method according to claim 1, wherein said energy transfer device does not comprise any pyrotechnic material. 12. The method according to claim 1, wherein said energy transfer device further comprises a device housing including a central bore extending therethrough, said housing including a housing forward section and a housing aft section, said metallic body being inserted within said housing central bore. 13. The method according to claim 12, wherein said housing forward and aft sections are substantially cylindrical, said housing forward section having a larger diameter than said housing aft section. 14. The method according to claim 12, wherein said housing forward section comprises a threaded outer surface. 15. The method according to claim 1, wherein at least said first pyrotechnic device and said energy transfer device comprise a downhole tool that is coupled with a pipe string or other downhole tool. 16. A method of igniting a pyrotechnic charge downhole in a well comprising: providing a first pyrotechnic device, an energy transfer device, and a second pyrotechnic device, said energy transfer device comprising a metallic body having a forward section, an aft section, and an axial passageway extending therethrough;igniting said first pyrotechnic device to detonate an output charge; anddirecting at least a portion of the energy from the detonation of said output charge through said axial passageway toward said second pyrotechnic device thereby igniting said second pyrotechnic device, wherein said body forward section comprises a forward face that is configured to be placed adjacent said first pyrotechnic device so as to receive said at least a portion of the energy from the detonation of said output charge, said forward face being deformable by said at least a portion of the energy from the detonation of said output charge to form a constriction in said passageway. 17. The method according to claim 16, wherein said forward face is substantially planar prior to igniting of said first pyrotechnic device.
