An input receptacle receives currency bills and checks. A transport mechanism transports the bills and checks along a transport path to an output receptacle. An image scanner, adjacent the transport path, is configured to generate one or more electrical signals from which image data can be derived. The image data is reproducible as a visually readable image of at least a portion of each of the plurality of documents. A controller is configured to determine a denomination of each of the currency bills. In response to the controller not determining a denomination of one of the currency bills, the controller flags the currency bill as a no-call document by causing at least a portion of the image data to be displayed as a visually readable image of the flagged currency bill on the display.

1. A method of processing currency bills in a document processing system, comprising: receiving a plurality of currency bills in an input receptacle of the document processing system, each currency bill bearing a respective serial number;transporting the plurality of currency bills, one at a time, from the input receptacle along a transport path to an output receptacle;imaging each of the plurality of currency bills with an image scanner positioned adjacent to the transport path to produce image data, the image data being reproducible as a visually readable image of at least a portion of each of the plurality of currency bills;extracting the serial numbers from the image data for each of the currency bills;comparing each extracted serial number with a plurality of serial numbers in a currency bill database to determine if a currency bill associated with an extracted serial number is a suspect currency bill;determining that one of the plurality of currency bills is a suspect currency bill based on the act of comparing; andin response to the determining that one of the plurality of currency bills is a suspect currency bill, stopping the transportation of the plurality of currency bills such that the determined suspect currency bill is the last currency bill transported to the output receptacle. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising in response to the determining that one of the plurality of currency bills is a suspect currency bill, displaying at least a portion of the produced image data as a visually readable image of the suspect currency bill on a display unit of the document processing system. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 100 documents per minute. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 300 documents per minute. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 400 currency bills per minute. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 700 currency bills per minute. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 1000 currency bills per minute. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the acts of transporting, imaging, extracting, comparing, and determining are performed at a rate of at least about 1200 currency bills per minute. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of serial numbers in the currency bill database are associated with currency bills of interest. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of serial numbers in the currency bill database are serial numbers of currency bills associated with criminal activity. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of currency bills are U.S. currency bills. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the document processing system has a footprint of less than about 1.5 square feet. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the document processing system has a weight of less than about 25 pounds. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of currency bills are U.S. currency bills and each U.S. currency bill has a wide edge, and wherein the act of transporting comprises transporting each document in a wide-edge leading manner, the document processing system having a footprint of less than about 2 square feet and a weight of less than about 35 pounds. 15. The method of claim 2, further comprising in response to the determining, displaying a plurality of selection elements. 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising in response to displaying a plurality of selection elements, detecting a selection of one of the displayed plurality of selection elements. 17. The method of claim 15, wherein the plurality of selection elements are configured to allow an operator of the document processing system to make an authentication determination associated with the suspect document; and wherein the plurality of selection elements include an override element and a suspect element. 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the plurality of selection elements are softkeys displayed on the display unit. 19. The method of claim 2, further comprising in response to the determining, detecting a selection of one of a plurality of selection elements. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the selection elements are softkeys, push buttons, or a combination thereof.
