The electronic mail may be transmitted over the Internet to a service center or from a service center to a resource administrator, but also may remain within a local or wide area network for transmission between a machine and a resource administrator. E-mail messages may be transmitted from a computer which is attached to a device that is being monitored or controlled and include information regarding the status, usage, or capabilities of the attached device. The device may send status messages and usage information of the device to either a resource administrator or to a service center on the Internet through a firewall.

An method for monitoring a communication device that is communicatively coupled to a first network, the apparatus being connected to a second network, comprising: receiving, using a first protocol, device information of the communication device, the device information including (1) status information received from sensors of the communication device, and (2) a device identification of the communication device;storing the received device information;identifying a destination of the desired device information, the destination being connected to the first network;identifying, of the received device information, desired device information to be transmitted; andtransmitting the desired device information to the identified destination connected to the first network using e-mail. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising: determining whether to transmit the desired device information or not, based on the received device information of the communication device. 5. An apparatus for monitoring a communication device that is communicatively coupled to a first network, the apparatus being connected to a second network, comprising: a receiver configured to receive, using a first protocol, device information of the communication device, the device information including (1) status information received from sensors of the communication device, and (2) a device identification of the communication device;a memory configured to store the received device information;a processor configured to determine which destination, of a plurality of destinations, the received device information should be sent, the destination being connected to the first network; anda transmitter configured to transmit the received device information to the determined destination connected to the first network. 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to identify the destination of the desired device information from among a plurality of destinations.
