A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU) comprises a first pane of a transparent material and a second pane of a transparent material. 1. A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU), comprising: a first pane of a transparent material;a second pane of a transparent material, the second pane being spaced apart from the first pane to define a cavity therebetween;a metal member bonded to the first pane with a first adhesive layer disposed between portions of the metal member and the first pane, the first adhesive layer forming a first portion of a first gas-tight connection between the first pane and the metal member and having a cavity-facing surface facing the cavity; anda hermetic coating disposed continuously over the cavity-facing surface of the first adhesive layer and forming a second portion of the first gas-tight connection, where the hermetic coating is an inorganic layer having a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the hermetic coating along the first gas-tight connection of less than 1×10−8 cc(STP)/sec. 2. A VIGU in accordance with claim 1, further comprising an array of stand-off members disposed between the first and second panes to maintain separation therebetween. 3. A VIGU in accordance with claim 1, wherein the second pane is bonded to the metal member with a second adhesive layer, the second adhesive layer forming a first portion of a second gas-tight connection between the second pane and the metal member. 4. A VIGU in accordance with claim 3, further comprising a hermetic coating disposed over at least a portion of the second adhesive layer and forming a second portion of the second gas-tight connection between the second pane and the metal member, where the hermetic coating is an inorganic layer having a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the hermetic coating along the second gas-tight connection of less than 1×10−8 cc(STP)/sec. 5. A VIGU in accordance with claim 1, wherein the second pane is bonded to a second metal member with a second adhesive layer, the second adhesive layer forming a first portion of a second gas-tight connection between the second pane and the second metal member. 6. A VIGU in accordance with claim 5, wherein the first and second metal members are hermetically joined to one another. 7. A VIGU in accordance with claim 5, further comprising a hermetic coating disposed over at least a portion of the second adhesive layer and forming a second portion of the second gas-tight connection between the second pane and the second metal member, where the hermetic coating is an inorganic layer having a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the hermetic coating along the second gas-tight connection of less than 1×10−8 cc(STP)/sec. 8. A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU), comprising: a first pane of a transparent material;a second pane of a transparent material, the second pane being spaced apart from the first pane to define a cavity therebetween;at least one of a spacer or an array of stand-off members disposed in the cavity between the first and second panes to maintain separation therebetween;a first adhesive layer of a non-hermetic bonding material disposed around the periphery of the cavity between portions of the first and second panes and forming a first portion of a structural connection between the first and the second panes;each of the first and second panes and the first adhesive layer having respective cavity-facing surfaces that face toward the cavity; anda hermetic coating layer of an inorganic material coating continuously over the cavity-facing surface of the first adhesive layer and at least one of the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first and second panes where the hermetic coating is an inorganic layer having a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the hermetic coating along the first gas-tight connection of less than 1×10−8 cc(STP)/sec. 9. A VIGU in accordance with claim 8, wherein the structural connection between the first and second frames further comprises: a first metal frame disposed around the periphery of the cavity and having a first portion attached to the first pane by the first adhesive layer and a second portion;a second metal frame disposed around the periphery of the cavity adjacent to the first metal frame, the second metal frame having a first portion hermetically joined to the second portion of the first metal frame and a second portion; anda second adhesive layer of a non-hermetic bonding material, the second adhesive layer being attached around the periphery of the cavity between the second portion of the second metal frame and the second pane and having a cavity-facing surface facing the cavity;wherein the hermetic coating layer further extends continuously over the cavity-facing surface of the second adhesive layer and the other of the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first and second panes. 10. A VIGU in accordance with claim 9, wherein the first and second adhesive layers and overlying hermetic coating layer have a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the adhesive layers and hermetic coating layer of less than 1×10−8 cc(STP)/sec. 11. A VIGU according to claim 8, wherein the inorganic material of the hermetic coating layer comprises greater than 50% aluminum oxide. 12. A VIGU according to claim 8, wherein the hermetic coating layer has a thickness from 20 nm to 100 nm. 13. A VIGU according to claim 8, wherein the first and second adhesive layers each have respective outside-facing surfaces that face away from the cavity, and a second hermetic coating layer coats the outside-facing surface of at least one of the first and second adhesive layers. 14. A method for manufacturing a vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU), the method comprising the following steps: providing a first pane of a transparent material having a cavity-facing surface defined thereon;affixing a first adhesive layer of a non-hermetic bonding material around the periphery of the cavity-facing surface of the first pane, the first adhesive layer defining a respective cavity-facing surface;jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with a first continuous hermetic coating layer of an inorganic material where the hermetic coating is an inorganic layer having a leak rate of helium into the cavity through the hermetic coating along the first gas-tight connection of less than 1×10˜8 cc(STP)/sec;providing a second pane of a transparent material having a respective cavity-facing surface defined thereon, the second pane being spaced apart from the first pane to define a cavity therebetween;providing at least one of a spacer or an array of stand-off members in the cavity between the first and second panes to maintain separation therebetween; andoperatively connecting the first pane, the first continuous hermetic coating layer and the second pane to one another to form a hermetic seal around the cavity containing the spacer or array of stand-off members. 15. A method in accordance with claim 14, further comprising the following steps: affixing a second adhesive layer of a non-hermetic bonding material around the periphery of the cavity-facing surface of the second pane, the second adhesive layer defining a respective cavity-facing surface;jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the second pane and the second adhesive layer with a second continuous hermetic coating layer of an inorganic material. 16. A method in accordance with claim 15, wherein the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with a first continuous hermetic coating layer and the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the second pane and the second adhesive layer with a second continuous hermetic coating layer are both performed prior to operatively connecting the first pane and the second pane to one another. 17. A method in accordance with claim 15, further comprising the following steps: affixing a first metal frame to the first adhesive layer prior to the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with the first continuous hermetic coating layer;affixing a second metal frame to the second adhesive layer prior to the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the second pane and the second adhesive layer with the second continuous hermetic coating layer;hermetically joining the first metal frame to the second metal frame after the steps of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with the first continuous hermetic coating layer and jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the second pane and the second adhesive layer with the second continuous hermetic coating layer. 18. A method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with the first continuous hermetic coating layer is performed by chemical deposition. 19. A method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with the first continuous hermetic coating layer is performed by physical vapor deposition. 20. A method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the step of jointly coating the respective cavity-facing surfaces of the first pane and the first adhesive layer with the first continuous hermetic coating layer is performed by atomic layer deposition.
