A flight-operable, truly modular aircraft has an aircraft core to which one or more of outer wings members, fuselage, cockpit, leading and trailing edge couplings, and empennage and tail sections can be removably coupled and/or replaced during the operating life span of the aircraft. In preferred embodiments the aircraft core houses the propulsive engines, avionics, at least 80% of the fuel, and all of the landing gear. The aircraft core is preferably constructed with curved forward and aft composite spars, that couple to outer wing sections and possibly other sections using hardpoints. The aircraft core preferably has a large central cavity dimensioned to interchangeably carry an ordnance launcher, a surveillance payload, electronic countermeasures, and other types of cargo. Contemplated aircraft can be quite large, for example having a wing span of at least 80 ft.

1. A flight-operable, modular aircraft having an operational life, an originally deployed left wing, and optionally including a fuselage, the aircraft comprising: an engine that provides a propulsive force for the aircraft;a center section having a cargo bay that is (a) disposed along a centerline of the aircraft and (b) eliminates all top and bottom structural load-bearing members, such that top and bottom skins of the cargo bay functional solely as fairings;a forward hardpoint coupling positioned to couple the fuselage to the center section during an operational life of the aircraft; anda wing hardpoint coupling that couples the left wing to the center section during the operational life. 2. The aircraft of claim 1, further comprising a right wing spar that is structurally coupled with a left wing spar at least predominantly using forward and aft spars of the center section. 3. The aircraft of claim 2, wherein the forward spar has parallel curved sides, and comprises a composite material. 4. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the left wing is coupled to the center section in a mid-wing configuration. 5. The aircraft of claim 1, further comprising a hinge that couples the left wing to at a horizontally curved spar of the center section. 6. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the center section has hardpoints for connecting a nose section and the left wing to a horizontally curved forward spar, and a tail section to a horizontally curved aft spar. 7. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the aircraft further comprises nose and tail sections, and bending loads resulting from the nose and tail section are structurally carried by inboard and outboard left ribs, and inboard and outboard right ribs, each of said ribs extending between forward and aft horizontally curved spars. 8. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the center section provides a least 25% of lift of the aircraft during the at least some portion of cruise flight. 9. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the aircraft is shaped as a flying wing, having substantially no empennage, no horizontal tail, and no vertical tail. 10. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the engine is disposed in the center section, and wherein the engine does not extend above or below the center section. 11. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the center section further comprises avionics that includes electronics capable of operating the aircraft through both ground control and on-board pilot control, and fault-tolerant flight control computers and redundant sensors that communicate via an aircraft network bus. 12. The aircraft of claim 1, further comprising first, second, and third landing gear that retract into the center section. 13. The aircraft of claim 1, further comprising a cockpit, and wherein the center section is an interchangeable mission module that includes a targeting system operable by each of (a) pilot in the cockpit and (b) a ground controller. 14. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the center section is an interchangeable mission module that houses at least 80% of all onboard fuel. 15. The aircraft of claim 1, wherein the aircraft has a wing span of at least 80 ft, and has left and right outer wing members having sufficient stiffness to produce a natural frequency of no less than 6 Hz.
