An aerial delivery system is configured to allow delivery of one or more releasable items after the system is extracted from an aircraft. One or more linear guidance devices and releasable securing mechanisms allow the aerial delivery system to deploy one or more releasable items at an appropriate time. The releasable securing mechanisms may utilize one or more rotatable latch plates. The one or more releasable items may be deployed simultaneously, or in a staged or staggered fashion. Through use of drag or lift-producing devices, the system may be recovered and reused. The attitude and/or azimuth orientation of the system may be varied prior to, during, and/or after release of a releasable item.

1. An aerial delivery system, comprising: a first linear guidance device comprising a monorail configured to permit the release of a first releaseable item having extended, rear-mounted control surfaces; anda first releasable securing mechanism configured to couple the first releasable item to the first linear guidance device, the first releasable securing mechanism comprising:a rotatable inner latch plate;a rotatable outer latch plate; anda locking element comprising a tapered pin, wherein the tapered pin is insertable into the first releasable item, wherein, responsive to rotation of the inner latch plate, the tapered pin is removable from the first releasable item, wherein the aerial delivery system is extractable from an aircraft via a parachute, andwherein the rear-mounted control surfaces of the first releasable item are extended prior to extraction of the aerial delivery system from the aircraft. 2. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a flexible element coupling the outer latch plate and the locking element. 3. The aerial delivery system of claim 2, wherein the flexible element transfers a portion of kinetic energy from the outer latch plate to the locking element to extract the locking element from the first releasable item. 4. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, wherein the first releasable item is decoupled from the aerial delivery system responsive to the locking element exiting a cavity in the first releasable item. 5. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a second releasable securing mechanism coupling the first releasable item to the first linear guidance device. 6. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a second releasable securing mechanism coupling a second releasable item to the first linear guidance device. 7. The aerial delivery system of claim 6, wherein the first releasable securing mechanism activates prior to activation of the second releasable securing mechanism. 8. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, wherein the first releasable item exerts a shear force on the locking element during descent of the aerial delivery system through the air, and wherein the shear force at least partially urges the separation of the locking element and the first releasable item. 9. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, wherein, during descent of the aerial delivery system through the air, the outer latch plate rotates to permit rotation of the inner latch plate when the outer latch plate is not restrained. 10. The aerial delivery system of claim 1 wherein, responsive to operation of the first releasable securing mechanism, the first releasable item separates from the first linear guidance device during parachute-controlled descent of the aerial delivery system through the air. 11. The aerial delivery system of claim 1, wherein the first releasable item comprises a conventional munition fitted with a shoe, the shoe configured to be received into the monorail. 12. The aerial delivery system of claim 11, wherein the shoe comprises a tapered end to prevent the shoe catching on the monorail. 13. The aerial delivery system of claim 11, wherein, responsive to operation of the first releasable securing mechanism, the conventional munition exits the aerial delivery system under the guidance of the monorail. 14. A method of using an aerial delivery system, the method comprising: coupling a first releasable item to a first linear guidance device via a first releasable securing mechanism, wherein the first linear guidance device comprises a monorail configured to permit the release of a first releaseable item, the first releasable item having extended, rear-mounted control surfaces; andactivating, during parachute-controlled descent of the aerial delivery system through the air, the first releasable securing mechanism to cause the first releasable item to separate from the aerial delivery system under the influence of the first linear guidance device and with the rear-mounted control surfaces extended, wherein the first releasable securing mechanism comprises:a rotatable inner latch plate;a rotatable outer latch plate; anda locking element insertable into the first releasable item. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising a flexible element coupling the outer latch plate and the locking element, wherein the flexible element transfers a portion of kinetic energy from the outer latch plate to the locking element to extract the locking element from the first releasable item. 16. The method of claim 14, wherein, during parachute-controlled descent of the aerial delivery system through the air, the outer latch plate rotates to permit rotation of the inner latch plate when the outer latch plate is not restrained. 17. The method of claim 14, wherein the aerial delivery system comprises a rotation mechanism configured to allow the azimuth of the aerial delivery system with respect to a parachute to be varied during descent of the aerial delivery system through the air. 18. The aerial delivery system of claim 14, wherein the first releasable item is a piece of ordnance deployable only via the rear cargo door of the aircraft.
