The method of claim 1, wherein removing at least a portion of the filtrate from the sample preparation system includes at least one of: tipping the sample preparation system,inverting the sample preparation system,decanting the filtrate from the sample preparation system,aspirating the filtrate from the sample preparation system,applying pressure to the freestanding receptacle, and combinations thereof. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir and coupled to the freestanding receptacle, and wherein removing at least a portion of the filtrate includes removing at least a portion of the filtrate from a sampling port of the freestanding receptacle. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system further includes a lid having a sampling port, anda filter in fluid communication with the reservoir and coupled to the lid, and wherein removing at least a portion of the filtrate includes removing at least a portion of the filtrate from the sampling port of the lid. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system further includes a lid, anda filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein the filter is substantially planar and coupled to an inner surface of the lid. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system further includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein the filter is substantially tubular and includes a longitudinal axis that is directed toward the reservoir. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte of interest includes at least one of a microorganism, a biomolecule, a chemical, a metal ion, a metal-ion-containing complex, and combinations thereof. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the source comprises the diluent. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the source includes a food source. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the diluent includes at least one of a surfactant, a rheological agent, an antimicrobial neutralizer, a nutrient, a pH buffering agent, an enzyme, an indicator molecule, sterile water, an organic solvent, and a combination thereof. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein positioning the liquid composition in a reservoir defined by the freestanding receptacle includes positioning the liquid composition in a reservoir defined by a rigid container. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein positioning the liquid composition in a reservoir defined by the freestanding receptacle includes positioning the liquid composition in a reservoir defined by a deformable liner. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising positioning the deformable liner within a second reservoir defined by a freestanding container that is more rigid than the deformable liner. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein positioning the liquid composition in a reservoir includes at least one of: positioning the source comprising the diluent in the reservoir,adding the source and the diluent to the reservoir simultaneously,adding the source to the reservoir prior to adding the diluent to the reservoir,adding the diluent to the reservoir prior to adding the source to the reservoir, andcombining the source and the diluent to form a liquid composition, and adding the liquid composition to the reservoir. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein filtering the liquid composition to form a filtrate includes passing the diluent and the analyte of interest, if present, from the reservoir into the interior of the filter, such that the reservoir includes the liquid composition, and the filter includes the filtrate. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein filtering the liquid composition by passing the diluent and the analyte of interest, if present, from the reservoir into the interior of the filter includes at least one of: inverting the sample preparation system,applying pressure to the freestanding receptacle,positioning the filter at least partially below a level of the liquid composition in the reservoir, and combinations thereof. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein filtering the liquid composition to form a filtrate includes passing the diluent and the analyte of interest, if present, from the interior of the filter into the reservoir, such that the filter includes the liquid composition, and the reservoir includes the filtrate. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein the filter is collapsible. 20. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a filter in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein the filter is rigid. 21. The method of claim 1, wherein the sample preparation system includes a plurality of filters in fluid communication with the reservoir, and wherein filtering the liquid composition includes passing the liquid composition successively through the plurality of filters.
