The method, in various embodiments, includes detecting a peak of the input signal and detecting an envelope of the input signal. In various embodiments, the peak and envelope are used to identify out-of-band blocking signals and to adjust gain control. The method also includes comparing the peak to a first threshold Tp and comparing the envelope to a second threshold Te. In the method, if the peak is above the first threshold and the envelope is below the second threshold, then ignoring the input signal. If the envelope is above the second threshold, the method includes applying automatic gain control to decode information encoded in the input signal.

The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to increase the gain of the amplifier if the input signal detected by the peak detector is below a first threshold and the input signal detected by the RSSI is below a second threshold. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to adjust the gain of the amplifier to improve signal-to-noise ratio if the input signal detected by the peak detector is below a first threshold and the input signal detected by the RSSI is above a second threshold. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to decrease the gain of the amplifier to attempt to detect a signal if the input signal detected by the peak detector is above a first threshold and the input signal detected by the RSSI is below a second threshold. 8. The system of claim 3, wherein the AGC processor is configured to sample outputs of the RSSI detector and the peak detector sequentially. 9. The system of claim 5, wherein the first threshold is programmable. 10. The system of claim 5, wherein the second threshold is programmable. 11. A device for radio frequency communications, the device comprising: an antenna configured to receive incoming radio signals;a timer;a power supply connected to the timer;receiver electronics connected to the antenna, the timer, and the power supply, the receiver electronics including a peak detector and a received signal strength indicator (RSSI), wherein the receiver electronics are adapted to recognize an out of band blocking signal based on outputs from the peak detector and the RSSI, wherein the RSSI is set at a level sufficient to exceed a noise floor, and wherein the peak detector is set at a point at which a desired signal is affected by nonlinearity of gain compression from an out of band interferer. 12. The device of claim 11, further comprising an amplifier, and wherein the receiver electronics are adapted to adjust gain of the amplifier based on the received outputs of the peak detector and the RSSI. 13. The device of claim 12, wherein the amplifier includes a low noise amplifier (LNA). 14. The device of claim 11, wherein the receiver electronics include a processor configured to monitor the RSSI with respect to a predetermined RSSI threshold. 15. The device of claim 14, wherein the processor and the timer are configured to determine whether the RSSI is below the predetermined threshold for a predetermined amount of time Tr. 16. The device of claim 15, wherein the processor is configured to recognize an input signal during the predetermined amount of time Tr to avoid premature termination of reception. 17. The device of claim 11, wherein the incoming radio signals include an input signal of a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) receiver. 18. The device of claim 11, further comprising a filter configured to filter the received incoming radio signals. 19. The device of claim 14, wherein the predetermined RSSI threshold is programmable. 20. The device of claim 15, wherein the predetermined amount of time Tr is programmable.
