The present invention provides a method and apparatus for configuration of adaptive integrated circuitry, to provide one or more operating modes or other functionality in a communication device, such as a cellular telephone, a GSM telephone, another type of mobile telephone or mobile station, or any other type of media communication device, including video, voice or radio, or other forms of multimedia. The adaptive integrated circuitry is configured and reconfigured for multiple tasks, such as channel acquisition, voice transmission, or multimedia and other data processing. In the preferred embodiment, the configuration and reconfiguration occurs to adaptively optimize the performance of the particular activity over time, such as to increase the speed of channel acquisition, increase throughput rates, increase perceived voice and media quality, and decrease the rate of dropped communication sessions.

An adaptive integrated circuit for performing a plurality of media functional modes of a communications standard, the integrated circuit comprising: a plurality of heterogeneous computational elements, each of the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements performing an arithmetic operation and having an architecture having a layout with fixed hardware components, the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements having computational element having at least two different architectures; andan interconnection network coupled to the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements, the interconnection network changing interconnections between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to configure the computational elements to perform a first media functional mode, and the interconnection network further changing the interconnections between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to reconfigure the computational elements to perform a second, different, media functional mode. 2. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein the communications standard is a legacy standard and wherein the interconnection network changes the interconnections between the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to perform a second plurality of multi-media functional modes for a new communications standard different from the legacy standard. 3. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein the media functional modes include an acquisition mode and a traffic mode. 4. The integrated circuit of claim 3, wherein the traffic mode includes a data reception mode, a data transmission mode, and a data processing mode. 5. The integrated circuit of claim 3, wherein the traffic mode includes a media reception mode, a media transmission mode, a media processing mode, and a control processing mode. 6. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein the performance of media functions modes of the communications standard is one of a plurality of operating modes, and wherein the interconnection network changes the interconnections between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computation elements to perform another of the plurality of operating modes, wherein the plurality of operating modes includes one of the group of mobile telecommunication, personal digital assistance, multimedia reception, mobile packet- based communication, paging, multimedia encoding, multimedia decoding, image functions, web browsing, and location determination. 7. The integrated circuit of claim 1, further comprising a wireless communication network interface coupled to the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements. 8. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein the first media functional mode and the second media functional mode are configured simultaneously and in varying proportions depending on exigencies of the communications standard. 9. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements are configured based on optimization of performance of the media functional modes of the communication standard including the first and second media functional modes. 10. A method of configuring an adaptive integrated circuit to performing a plurality of media functional modes of a communications standard, the integrated circuit including a plurality of heterogeneous computational elements, each of the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements performing an arithmetic operation and having an architecture having a layout with fixed hardware components, the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements having computational element having at least two different architectures, and an interconnection network coupled to the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements, the method comprising: changing interconnections of the interconnection network between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to configure the computational elements to perform a first media functional mode;changing the interconnections of the interconnection network between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to reconfigure the computational elements to perform a second, different, media functional mode. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the communications standard is a legacy standard and wherein the interconnection network changes the interconnections between the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to perform a second plurality of multi-media functional modes for a new communications standard different from the legacy standard. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the media functional modes include an acquisition mode and a traffic mode. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the traffic mode includes a data reception mode, a data transmission mode, and a data processing mode. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the traffic mode includes a media reception mode, a media transmission mode, a media processing mode, and a control processing mode. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the performance of the media functions modes of the communications standard is one of a plurality of operating modes, the method further comprising: changing the interconnections of the interconnection network between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computation elements to perform another of the plurality of operating modes,wherein the plurality of operating modes includes one of the group of mobile telecommunication, personal digital assistance, multimedia reception, mobile packet-based communication, paging, multimedia encoding, multimedia decoding, image functions, web browsing, and location determination. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the first media functional mode and the second media functional mode are configured simultaneously and in varying proportions depending on exigencies of the communications standard. 17. The method of claim 10, wherein the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements are configured based on optimization of performance of the media functional modes of the communication standard including the first and second media functional modes. 18. The method of claim 10, wherein the some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements reconfigured to perform the second media functional mode include at least some of the heterogeneous computational elements configured to perform the first media functional mode. 19. The method of claim 10, wherein the second media functional mode is performed after the completion of the performance of the first media functional mode. 20. The method of claim 10, wherein the first and second media functional modes are performed simultaneously. 21. A device for performing a plurality of media functional modes of a communications standard, the device comprising: a memory including configuration information;a plurality of heterogeneous computational elements, each of the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements performing an arithmetic operation and having an architecture having a layout with fixed hardware components, the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements having computational element having at least two different architectures; andan interconnection network coupled to the heterogeneous plurality of computational elements and the memory, the interconnection network changing interconnections between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to configure the computational elements to perform a first media functional mode in response to the configuration information, and the interconnection network further changing the interconnections between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computational elements to reconfigure the computational elements to perform a second, different, media functional mode in response to the configuration information. 22. The device of claim 21, wherein the performance of the media functions modes of the communications standard is one of a plurality of operating modes of the device, and wherein the interconnections of the interconnection network are changed between at least some of the plurality of heterogeneous computation elements to perform another of the plurality of operating modes in response to the configuration information, wherein the plurality of operating modes includes one of the group of mobile telecommunication, personal digital assistance, multimedia reception, mobile packet-based communication, paging, multimedia encoding, multimedia decoding, image functions, web browsing, and location determination.
