An embolic frame having looped support struts. The frame configuration provides enhanced longitudinal compliance, improved sealing against a vessel wall, low profile delivery, and a short deployed length. The looped support struts have a high degree of “radial” stiffness with a low degree of “longitudinal” stiffness. In the deployed state, the frame exerts a relatively high stress onto a vessel wall to maintain an effective seal, yet remains compliant in the longitudinal direction. The looped support struts elongate when tensioned and assume a compressed and essentially linear form. While constrained in this linear state by a delivery catheter, the support struts exert minimal stress onto the delivery system. The overall delivery profile and stiffness are therefore reduced. When the delivery catheter constraint is removed during deployment, the struts “snap open” and assume a looped configuration which exert a high degree of force onto the vessel wall.

1. An embolic filter device, comprising: a support wire;a filter support portion and multiple support struts, wherein each of the multiple support struts extends from the filter support portion, and wherein the filter support portion is circumferentially disposed about the support wire;a collar that couples each of the multiple support struts to the support wire; anda filter element attached to the filter support portion, the filter element defining an opening that defines a filter opening plane;the embolic filter device having a constrained configuration while subjected to a radial constraint and an unconstrained configuration, wherein, in the unconstrained configuration, at least one support strut of the multiple support struts has at least one portion with a bend equal to or greater than 90 degrees, wherein the position of the collar can be offset proximally from the filter opening plane while the embolic filter device is in the constrained configuration, and wherein the collar is offset distally from the filter opening plane while the embolic filter device is in the unconstrained configuration. 2. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the filter element includes two or more scallops that define the opening, and wherein the filter opening plane is positioned at the most proximal ends of each of the two or more scallops. 3. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the multiple support struts extend radially from the collar. 4. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the at least one support strut of the multiple support struts that has the at least one portion with a bend equal to or greater than 90 degrees is configured to enhance a radial force imparted against a vessel wall for improved sealing of the filter support portion against the vessel wall. 5. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein each strut of the multiple support struts has at least one portion with a bend equal to or greater than 90 degrees. 6. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein while the embolic filter device is in the constrained configuration the multiple support struts impart minimal forces in a radial direction with respect to the support wire, and wherein while the embolic filter device is in the unconstrained configuration the multiple support struts impart forces in the radial direction with respect to the support wire that are higher than the minimal forces imparted by the multiple support struts while the embolic filter device is in the constrained configuration. 7. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein while the embolic filter device is in the unconstrained configuration an unconstrained diameter of the embolic filter device is not significantly disrupted when the support collar is displaced by a small distance in a longitudinal direction. 8. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein at least one support strut of the multiple support struts has an “s” shape. 9. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein a distal portion of the filter element is slidably attached to the support wire. 10. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the collar is rigidly fixed to the support wire. 11. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the embolic filter device spontaneously assumes the unconstrained configuration when the radial constraint is removed and the embolic filter device is untensioned. 12. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the at least one portion with the bend equal to or greater than 90 degrees is unattached to the filter element. 13. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of a distance that the collar is offset distally while the embolic filter device is in the unconstrained configuration to an unconstrained diameter of the opening of the filter element is in arange of about 0.2 to about 0.5. 14. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the multiple support struts includes three support struts. 15. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the multiple support struts includes four support struts. 16. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the multiple support struts includes five support struts. 17. The embolic filter device of claim 1, wherein the multiple support struts includes six support struts.
