Methods and apparatus are disclosed for determining the occurrence of a closed or open apnea. Respiratory air flow from a patient is measured to give an air flow signal. The determination of an apnea is performed by applying an oscillatory pressure waveform of known frequency to a patient's airway, calculating a complex quantity representing a patient admittance (12) and comparing its value with ranges (14,16) indicative of open or closed apneas. The method distinguishes open from closed apneas even when the model used to calculate admittance is not based on details of the respiratory apparatus. In addition the patient admittance may be compared with admittance during normal breathing to avoid having to characterize the airway.

A method of classifying airway apneas of a patient as open and closed with a positive airway pressure respiratory apparatus connectable to a patient via an air delivery tube and a patient interface, the method comprising: (i) controlling delivery of a pressure waveform to a patient from the respiratory apparatus via the air delivery tube;(ii) measuring a flow rate and pressure of air at the respiratory apparatus;(iii) determining a capacitive component of an air delivery tube impedance with a processor of the respiratory apparatus;(iv) determining a patient admittance from said measured flow and pressure of air and said capacitive component with the processor; and(v) classifying the airway apnea on a basis of said patient admittance with the processor. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising correcting, with the processor, said flow rate for leak. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising correcting, with the processor, the said flow rate for vent flow. 4. A method of classifying airway apneas of a patient as open and closed comprising: (i) delivering a pressure waveform to the patient from a positive airway pressure respiratory apparatus to a patient via an air delivery tube;(ii) measuring a flow rate and pressure of air at the respiratory apparatus;(iii) determining an inductive component of an air delivery tube impedance;(iv) determining a patient admittance from said measured flow and pressure of air and said inductive component;(v) classifying the airway apnea on the basis of said patient admittance in the respiratory apparatus. 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of correcting the said flow rate for leak. 6. The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of correcting the said flow rate for vent flow. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining, with the processor, the phase angle of the admittance and classifying the airway apnea based on the phase angle. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the magnitude of the admittance and classifying the airway apnea based on the magnitude of the admittance. 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the real component of the admittance and classifying the airway apnea based on the real component of the admittance. 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the imaginary component of the admittance and classifying the airway apnea based on the imaginary component of the admittance. 11. The method of claim 1 whereby said pressure waveform is an alternating pressure waveform having a frequency of approximately 4 Hz. 12. The method of claim 1 whereby said pressure waveform is an alternating pressure waveform having a frequency in the range of approximately 2-8 Hz. 13. The method of claim 1 whereby said pressure waveform is an alternating pressure waveform having a frequency in the range of approximately 1-16 Hz. 14. The method of claim 1 whereby approximately the first 250 ms of flow or pressure data following an application of the pressure waveform are not measured. 15. The method of claim 1 wherein classifying the airway apnea comprises plotting a magnitude of the admittance against a phase angle of the admittance.
