In one embodiment, a method is disclosed comprising: determining the state of charge (SOC) of said batteries; determining the speed of the vehicle; if the SOC is greater than a given first threshold, selecting a charge-depleting operational mode of said vehicle; during operation of said vehicle, if the SOC is less than a given second threshold, selecting a charge-sustaining operating mode of said vehicle. In another embodiment, a system having a controller that operates the powertrain according to various embodiments is disclosed.

The method of claim 2 wherein said high traction electric operational mode is configured to dynamically select a torque combination of a first torque for said electric motor-generator and a second torque for said electric motor depending upon the efficiencies of said electric-generator and said electric motor. 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said step high traction electric mode is configured to dynamically select a torque combination of a first torque for said electric motor-generator and a second torque for said electric motor depending upon the efficiencies of said electric-generator and said electric motor for a desired torque demanded by the driver. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of selecting a charge-sustaining operation mode of said vehicle further comprises: selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: parallel hybrid mode, series hybrid mode and all-electric mode. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said first threshold is substantially the same as said second threshold. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said first threshold is different from said second threshold. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said HEV vehicle is one of a group, said group comprising: HEV and PHEV vehicle. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein said first threshold is dependent on the speed of the vehicle. 10. The method of claim 1 wherein said second threshold is dependent on the speed of the vehicle. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein said first threshold and said second threshold increase in SOC as the speed of the vehicle increases. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of said method further comprises: during operation of said vehicle, dynamically selecting transitional operational modes, said transitional operating modes comprising one of a group, said group comprising: transitional all-electric mode-to-series hybrid mode; transitional series hybrid mode-to-parallel hybrid mode; and transitional all-electric mode-to-parallel hybrid electric mode. 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said transitional operating modes being selected for said vehicle upon the detection of transition conditions. 14. The method of claim 13 wherein said transition conditions comprises one of group, said group comprising: SOC, vehicle speed, driver demands, engine temperature, and diagnostic checks. 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of dynamically selecting transitional operational modes further comprises: selecting a fault operational mode, upon the detection of a fault condition. 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said fault condition comprises one of a group, said group comprising: exceeding a transition time threshold, engine fault detection, electric-generator fault detection, clutch fault detection. 17. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of said method further comprises: during operation of said vehicle, selecting a low SOC threshold for charge sustaining operating modes, said low SOC threshold depending upon the statistical driving patterns of the driver. 18. A system for controlling a powertrain for a HEV vehicle, said powertrain comprising: a prime mover; an electric motor-generator, said electric motor-generator mechanically coupled to said prime mover via a first clutch; an electric motor, said electric motor mechanically coupled to said electric motor-generator via a second clutch; a battery, said battery electrically coupled to said electric motor-generator and said electric motor, said battery configured to supply electrical energy to said electric motor-generator and said electric motor; a set of sensors, said sensors comprising one of a group, said group comprising: SOC sensor, vehicle speed sensor, temperature sensors, clutching sensors, electric motor sensors, electric motor-generating sensors, brake pedal sensor and accelerator pedal sensor;a first clutch actuator, said first clutch actuator configured to actuate said first clutch;a second clutch actuator, said second clutch actuator configured to actuate said second clutch; andat least one controller, said controller comprising a processor and computer readable storage, said storage further comprising computer readable instructions, said computer readable instructions when read by said processor, said controller is configured to:determining the state of charge (SOC) of said batteries;determining the speed of the vehicle;if the SOC is greater than a given first threshold, selecting a charge-depleting operational mode of said vehicle;during operation of said vehicle, if the SOC is less than a given second threshold, selecting a charge-sustaining operating mode of said vehiclereceiving as input SOC values, speed of vehicle value, and engine temperature values;if SOC is greater than a first threshold, selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: all-electric mode and high-traction electric mode;if SOC is below said first threshold in (ii) and if engine temperature is below a first temperature threshold, selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: all-electric mode and series hybrid mode;if engine temperature is above a first temperature threshold in (iii) and if SOC is below a second threshold and if speed of vehicle is below a first speed threshold, selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: all electric mode;if speed of vehicle is above said first speed threshold in (iv), selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: parallel hybrid mode;if SOC is not below said second threshold in (iv) and if speed of the vehicle is above a second speed threshold, selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: parallel hybrid mode; andif speed of vehicle is not above a second speed threshold in (vi), selecting an operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: series hybrid mode. 19. The system of claim 19 wherein said controller further configured to: dynamically selecting a torque combination of a first torque for said electric motor-generator and a second torque for said electric motor depending upon the efficiencies of said electric-generator and said electric motor. 21. The system of claim 20 wherein said controller further configured to: dynamically selecting a torque combination of a first torque for said electric motor-generator and a second torque for said electric motor depending upon the efficiencies of said electric-generator and said electric motor for a desired torque demanded by the driver. 22. The system of claim 18 wherein said controller further configured to: selecting a charge-sustaining operational mode from one of a group, said group comprising: parallel hybrid mode, series hybrid mode. 23. The system of claim 18 wherein said controller further configured to: during operation of said vehicle, dynamically selecting transitional operational modes, said transitional operating modes comprising one of a group, said group comprising: transitional all-electric mode-to-series hybrid mode; transitional series hybrid mode-to-parallel hybrid mode; and transitional all-electric mode-to-parallel hybrid electric mode. 24. The system of claim 18 wherein said controller further configured to: during operation of said vehicle, selecting a low SOC threshold for charge sustaining operating modes, said low SOC threshold depending upon the statistical driving patterns of the driver.
