For a device running a mapping application that includes a display area for displaying a map and a set of graphical user interface (GUI) items, a method for providing routes is described. The method computes a route between a starting location and a destination location. The route includes a sequence of maneuvering instructions for guiding a user through the route. The method provides a movable GUI item for showing each maneuvering instruction in the sequence in order to allow a user to navigate the route by moving the GUI items in and out of the display area.

1. For a device running a mapping application that includes a display area for displaying a map on a touch-sensitive display screen of the device and a set of graphical user interface (GUI) items, a method for providing routes, the method comprising: displaying a route on the displayed map between a starting location and a destination location; anddisplaying a plurality of movable GUI items, each GUI item for providing a maneuvering instruction to guide a user through the route, each maneuvering instruction associated with a region of the map, wherein when a first movable GUI item that provides a first maneuvering instruction is displayed, a first region of the map that is associated with the first maneuvering instruction is displayed on the display area, andwherein when a second movable GUI item that provides a second maneuvering instruction is displayed, a second region of the map that is associated with the second maneuvering instruction is displayed on the display area, wherein the first movable GUI item moves out of the display area and the second movable GUI item moves into the display area in response to the user performing a swipe gesture on the first region of the map to display the second region of the map on the touch-sensitive display screen. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising moving, in response to the swipe gesture, the first region of the map out of the display area and moving the second region of the map into the display area. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein each movable GUI item comprises a navigation sign that resembles a road sign in an area of the map in which the route is displayed. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the maneuvering instruction relates to a juncture along the route and comprises at least an instructional arrow and a remaining distance to the destination location or to a next juncture along the route. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first maneuvering instruction and the second maneuvering instruction are neighboring maneuvering instructions in a sequence of maneuvering instructions. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein a particular region of the map that is associated with a particular maneuvering instruction includes a juncture for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the juncture for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user appears differently from other junctures of the particular region. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the swipe gesture is a first swipe gesture in a first direction, wherein the second movable GUI item moves out of the display area and the first movable GUI item moves into the display area when the user performs a second swipe gesture on the second region of the map on the touch-sensitive display screen in a second direction to display the first region of the map. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the movable GUI items resembles a road sign. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein a maneuvering instruction of a sequence of maneuvering instructions is for guiding the user at a juncture in the route. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the displayed route is a first route, the method further comprising displaying at least a second route between the starting and destination locations on the map. 12. The method of claim 1 further comprising: providing a user interface (UI) item for showing an overview of the route; andupon receiving a selection of the UI item for showing the overview, displaying the entire route in the map. 13. The method of claim 1 further comprising: providing a user interface (UI) item for showing an overview of the route; andupon receiving a selection of the UI item for showing the overview, displaying a scrollable list of maneuvering instructions in a sequence. 14. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a mapping application which when executed by at least one processing unit of a device provides a graphical user interface (GUI), the GUI comprising: a touch-sensitive display screen;a first display area for displaying a set of user interface (UI) items, each UI item providing a maneuvering instruction in a sequence of maneuvering instructions for guiding a user through a route between a starting location and a destination location, each maneuvering instruction in the sequence corresponding to a region of a map; anda second display area for displaying a first region of the map corresponding to a first maneuvering instruction in the sequence, the first maneuvering instruction provided by a first UI item that is displayed in the first display area, wherein the first region of the map moves out of the second display area and a second region of the map corresponding to a second maneuvering instruction in the sequence moves into the second display area when the user performs a swipe gesture on the first region of the map on the touch-sensitive display screen and, wherein, in response to the swipe gesture, the first UI item also moves out of the first display area and a second UI item that provides the second maneuvering instruction moves into the first display area. 15. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the first display area is translucently overlaid on the second display area such that the UI items appear to move over the map displayed in the second display area. 16. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein each UI item in the set of UI items comprises a navigation sign that resembles a road sign of an area of the map in which the route is displayed. 17. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein a particular region of the map that is associated with a particular maneuvering instruction includes a juncture for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user. 18. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 17, wherein the juncture, for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user, appears differently from other junctures of the particular region of the map. 19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein each maneuvering instruction relates to a juncture along the route and comprises at least an instructional arrow and a remaining distance to the destination location or to a next juncture along the route. 20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 18, wherein the juncture for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user is highlighted. 21. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 16, wherein a UI item for displaying a maneuvering instruction resembles a road sign by having a similar color as the road sign. 22. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the GUI further comprises a UI item that, when selected, causes the second display area to display the entire route in the map. 23. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the GUI further comprises a UI item for causing the second display area to display a scrollable list of the maneuvering instructions in the sequence. 24. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a mapping application which when executed by at least one processing unit of a device displays a map on a touch-sensitive display screen of the device, the application comprising sets of instructions for: displaying, on a first display area, a set of user interface (UI) items, each UI item providing a maneuvering instruction in a sequence of maneuvering instructions for guiding a user through a route between a starting location and a destination location, each maneuvering instruction in the sequence corresponding to a region of a map; anddisplaying, on a second display area, a first region of the map corresponding to a first maneuvering instruction in the sequence, the first maneuvering instruction provided by a first UI item that is displayed in the first display area, wherein the first region of the map moves out of the second display area and a second region of the map corresponding to a second maneuvering instruction in the sequence moves into the second display area when the user performs a swipe gesture on the first region of the map on the touch-sensitive display screen, wherein, in response to the swipe the first UI item also moves out of the first display area and a second UI item that provides the second maneuvering instruction moves into the first display area. 25. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 24, wherein the first display area is translucently overlaid on the second display area such that the UI items appear to move over the map displayed in the second display area. 26. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 24, wherein, each maneuvering instruction relates to a juncture along the route and comprises at least an instructional arrow and a remaining distance to the destination location or to a next juncture along the route. 27. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 24, wherein a particular region of the map that is associated with a particular maneuvering instruction includes a juncture for which the particular maneuvering instruction guides the user.
