An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

A method, comprising: coupling sensor electronics to an inserter and an electrochemical sensor, the sensor electronics operatively coupled to the electrochemical sensor to provide analyte related data to a remote location, the electrochemical sensor configured to generate one or more signals corresponding to monitored analyte levels under a skin surface;applying a force on the inserter to insert the inserter and the electrochemical sensor through the skin surface and to position the sensor electronics on the skin surface, the inserter operatively coupled to the electrochemical sensor, the inserter comprising a portion having a sharp structure adapted to support the electrochemical sensor during insertion through the skin surface;removing the applied force on the inserter; andwithdrawing the inserter from under the skin surface while leaving a portion of the electrochemical sensor under the skin surface; wherein a portion of the electrochemical sensor inserted through the skin surface protrudes from the sensor electronics positioned on the skin surface; and furtherwherein no calibration of the electrochemical sensor is performed after the electrochemical sensor is inserted through the skin surface and during a sensor lifetime including a period of operation of at least one week when the electrochemical sensor is generating signals corresponding to the monitored analyte level under the skin surface. 2. The method claim 1, further including maintaining the inserter and the electrochemical sensor in a cocked position prior to the insertion under the skin surface with a cocking mechanism, and releasing the inserter and the electrochemical sensor from the cocked position with a release mechanism. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrochemical sensor is electrically coupled to the sensor electronics. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein applying the force on the inserter inserts the electrochemical sensor under the skin surface at a depth of between about 2 to 12 mm. 5. The method of claim 1, further including maintaining the portion of the electrochemical sensor under the skin surface in fluid contact with interstitial fluid when the sensor electronics is positioned on the skin surface. 6. The method of claim 1, further including operatively coupling communication electronics of the sensor electronics to wirelessly communicate the analyte related data based on the signals generated by the electrochemical sensor to the remote location. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrochemical sensor includes a plurality of electrodes comprising at least one working electrode, the working electrode including an analyte-responsive enzyme and a mediator, and at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and further wherein the at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the sensor electronics is coupled to the inserter and the electrochemical sensor prior to applying the force on the inserter. 9. The method of claim 1, further including generating one or more temperature related signals associated with the electrochemical sensor. 10. The method of claim 9, further including communicating the generated one or more temperature related signals to the remote location.
