A method and an apparatus are used to target interactive virtual objects to subscribers in a television delivery system. Programs are selected and virtual object locations are defined in the selected programs. The virtual objects available for targeting are categorized and the categories are correlated to subscriber information to determine the optimum targeting of the virtual objects. Upstream data reception hardware, databases and processing hardware and software, and corresponding features in a user's terminal are used to accomplish these functions.

1. A method comprising: generating, by a processor, one or more rules for selecting at least one virtual object to display in a virtual object location within a video frame based on a contextual association between the virtual object location and image content spatially proximate to the virtual object location within the video frame; andstoring the one or more rules to a memory. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: transmitting the one or more rules to a terminal. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more rules provide targeting information relating the image content to one or more targeted groups. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the targeting information is based on comparing measures of compatibility between the image content and each of the one or more targeted groups. 5. The method of claim 2, further comprising transmitting a video program to the terminal separately from the at least one virtual object, wherein the video program comprises the video frame. 6. A method comprising: identifying, by a computing device, a plurality of virtual object locations at different spatial positions within a frame of a video program;selecting one or more virtual objects based on one or more rules, wherein the one or more rules are generated based on a respective contextual association between the plurality of virtual object locations and a respective plurality of different image contents spatially proximate to the plurality of virtual object locations; andinserting the selected one or more virtual objects respectively into the plurality of virtual object locations. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the computing device is a terminal. 8. The method of claim 7, further comprising: receiving the video program at the terminal separately from the selected one or more virtual objects. 9. The method of claim 7, further comprising: causing the video program having the selected one or more virtual objects respectively inserted into the plurality of virtual object locations to be displayed. 10. The method of claim 6, wherein the inserting is performed at an insertion center prior to a transmission of the video program to a terminal. 11. The method of claim 6, wherein at least one of the plurality of virtual object locations moves spatially in the video program with time. 12. The method of claim 6, further comprising: prior to the inserting, inserting one or more default virtual objects respectively into the plurality of virtual object locations; andreplacing at least one of the one or more default virtual objects respectively in the plurality of virtual object locations by performing the inserting of the selected one or more virtual objects respectively into the plurality of virtual object locations. 13. The method of claim 6, wherein the contextual association relates the respective plurality of different image contents to one or more targeted groups. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the inserting of the selected one or more virtual objects respectively into the plurality of virtual object locations is further based on user characteristics at a terminal. 15. A method comprising: selecting, by a computing device, within a frame of a video program, a virtual object for insertion into a virtual object location using one or more rules, wherein the one or more rules are generated based on a contextual association between the virtual object location and image content spatially proximate to the virtual object location. 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising: generating the one or more rules for selecting the virtual object to display in the virtual object location based at least in part on a measure of effectiveness for the virtual object in the virtual object location, wherein the measure of effectiveness for the virtual object in the virtual object location is based at least in part on relating the virtual object location with one or more targeted groups. 17. The method of claim 15, further comprising transmitting the video program to a terminal separately from the virtual object. 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the virtual object location moves spatially in the video program with time. 19. The method of claim 15, further comprising: determining the contextual association between the virtual object location and the image content spatially proximate to the virtual object location based on pattern recognition. 20. The method of claim 15, further comprising: determining the contextual association between the virtual object location and the image content spatially proximate to the virtual object location based on a relevancy between the virtual object to be inserted at the virtual object location and the image content spatially proximate to the virtual object location.
