A skate blade sharpening system includes a chassis and an elongated slot for receiving a skate blade, and a skate blade retention mechanism at an underside of the chassis to retain the skate blade in the sharpening position. A grinding wheel moves along the slot including the lower edge of the skate blade during sharpening. A pair of slot covers are mounted at a top surface of the chassis at respective ends of the slot. The slot covers are movable between covering and non-covering positions. In the non-covering positions the slot covers uncover the slot sufficiently to permit insertion and removal of the skate blade. In the covering positions, the slot covers cover end portions of the slot adjacent the ends of the skate blade to prevent insertion of objects through the end portions of the slot during sharpening.

A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 1, wherein the covering positions are inward positions adjacent the ends of the skate blade, and the non-covering positions are outward positions away from the ends of the skate blade. 3. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 2, wherein the slot covers are slidably mounted at the top surface of the chassis and are slidable between the outward and inward positions. 4. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 3, wherein the slot covers and top surface of the chassis are co-configured with a user-controlled locking mechanism providing for (i) sliding the slot covers between the outward and inward positions with the locking mechanism in an unlocked position, and (ii) locking the slot covers into the inward position with the locking mechanism in a locked position. 5. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 4, wherein the locking mechanism includes a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for which (i) a pawl is mechanically engaged with a ratchet in the locked position, and (ii) the pawl is mechanically disengaged from the ratchet in the unlocked position. 6. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 2, wherein the slot covers are retained on respective elongated retention features. 7. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 6, wherein the retention features include arch members each having a central rounded portion and lateral flat portions, the elongated retention features being formed at locations where the central rounded portion meets the lateral flat portions. 8. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 1, wherein the slot covers include respective sensing components to be engaged by a blade holder of the skate blade when the skate blade is in the sharpening position and the slot covers are in the covering positions, the sensing components providing respective indications to a controller of the skate blade sharpening system enabling the controller to selectively enable or disable sharpening operation. 9. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 8, wherein each sensing component includes a mechanical member moving between a first position and a second position, the mechanical member being in the first position when the sensing component is not engaged by the blade holder, the mechanical member being in the second position when the sensing component is engaged by the blade holder. 10. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 9, wherein the mechanical member is a bumper having a face portion pushed by the blade holder to move the bumper from the first position to the second position. 11. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 10, wherein the bumper is a pivoting member also having a switch-engaging portion, each sensing component further includes an electrical switch engaged by the switch-engaging portion when the bumper is in the second position, and the indication provided by each sensing component is a closure condition of the electrical switch. 12. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 11, wherein the closure condition is a closed condition of the electrical switch. 13. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 9, wherein each sensing component further includes a biasing member biasing the mechanical member into the first position, the biasing being overcome to move the mechanical member to the second position when the sensing component is engaged by the blade holder. 14. A skate blade sharpening system, comprising: a chassis having a top surface and an elongated slot for receiving a skate blade into a sharpening position;a skate blade retention mechanism at an underside of the chassis, the skate blade retention mechanism being configured to retain the skate blade in the sharpening position;a grinding wheel configured for movement along the slot including the lower edge of the skate blade in a sharpening operation; anda pair of slot covers mounted at the top surface of the chassis at respective ends of the slot, the slot covers being movable between respective covering positions and respective non-covering positions, the slot covers in the non-covering positions uncovering the slot sufficiently to permit insertion and removal of the skate blade, the slot covers in the covering positions sufficiently covering respective end portions of the slot adjacent respective ends of the skate blade to avoid exposing the user and mechanical components of the sharpening system to unsafe operating conditions. 15. A skate blade sharpening system according to claim 14, wherein the covering positions are inward positions adjacent the ends of the skate blade, and the non-covering positions are outward positions away from the ends of the skate blade, and wherein the slot covers are slidably mounted at the top surface of the chassis and are slidable between the outward and inward positions. 16.
