A corrosion-resistant self-locking manhole cover includes a cover plate adapted to rest on a manhole cover support surface of a manhole frame so as to be substantially flush with a top portion of the frame and a surrounding surface. An anchor on the cover plate, which may comprise nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material, is adapted to engage the manhole frame at a first location in a manner that resists lifting of the cover plate proximate to such location. A locking member on the cover plate, which may also comprise nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material, is movable between a locked position and an unlocked position. In the locked position, the locking member is adapted to engage the manhole frame at a second location in a manner that resists lifting of the cover plate proximate to such location. In the unlocked position, the locking member is disengaged from the manhole frame.

A corrosion-resistant self-locking manhole cover, comprising: a cover plate comprising nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material having an upper side and a lower side, said lower side being adapted to rest on a manhole cover support surface of a manhole frame so that said upper side is substantially flush with a top portion of said manhole frame and a surrounding surface in which said manhole frame is situated;an anchor mounted on said cover plate lower side, said anchor comprising nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material, said anchor being adapted to engage said manhole frame at a first location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said first location;a locking member mounted on said cover plate lower side, said locking member comprising nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material, said locking member being movable between a locked position in which said locking member is adapted to engage said manhole frame at a second location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said second location, and an unlocked position in which said locking member is not adapted to engage said manhole frame;metallic components associated with said anchor and said locking member to perform mounting functions, rotary drive functions, and biasing functions, each of said metallic components comprising either a corrosion-resistant metal that is exposed to environmental gases or a metal that need not be corrosion-resistant but is sealed against exposure to environmental gases;said metallic components to perform mounting functions comprising fasteners securing said anchor and said locking member to said cover plate lower side, said fasteners being made of metal and having fastener heads sealed within associated counterbores with sealing plugs, said counterbores and said sealing plugs being made of non-metallic corrosion-resistant material in order to seal said fastener heads against exposure to environmental gases, said sealing plugs being removable to allow access to said fastener heads;said metallic components to perform latching functions comprising a rotary drive mechanism operable to move said locking member between said locked position and said unlocked position, said rotary drive mechanism comprising a rotatable security lock bolt made of metal, said security lock bolt having a security lock face on said cover plate upper side to receive a security key, and a shank that extends below said cover plate lower side, said shank receiving a metallic nut to secure said security lock bolt to said locking member and said cover plate lower side, and said shank and said nut being covered by components made of non-metallic corrosion-resistant material in order to seal said shank and said nut against exposure to environmental gases, said components including an end cap that is removable to allow access to said nut; andsaid metallic components to perform biasing functions comprising a biasing mechanism below said cover plate lower side operable to bias said locking member to said locked position, said biasing mechanism comprising one or more springs made of corrosion-resistant metal and being exposed to environmental gases. 2. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said anchor and said locking member are entirely composed of nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material. 3. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said cover plate is entirely composed of nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material. 4. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said locking member comprises a core made from a first nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material selected to provide structural strength and a covering on said core made from a second nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material selected to provide wear resistance. 5. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 4, wherein said first nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material is selected from the group consisting of composite materials and said second nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material is selected from the group consisting of low-friction polymers. 6. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said support surface comprises an upper surface of an inwardly extending flange on said manhole frame and said anchor and said locking member are vertically adjustable to engage said manhole frame at or below a lower surface of said flange. 7. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 6, wherein said anchor and said locking member are vertically adjustable to accommodate manhole frames with different flange depths. 8. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, further including a latch comprising nonmetallic corrosion-resistant material on said cover plate lower side adapted to releasably retain said drive mechanism in said unlocking rotational position without said security lock being engaged by a security key. 9. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein there is only one of said anchor and said locking member. 10. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein said locking member is a first locking member and said anchor comprises a movable second locking member operatively connected to be movable in concert with said first locking member between a locked position in which said second locking member is adapted to engage said manhole frame, and an unlocked position in which said second locking member is not adapted to engage said manhole frame. 11. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 10, wherein said second locking member is operatively connected to said locking member by way of a linkage comprising non-metallic corrosion resistant material. 12. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 11, wherein said first and second locking members are driven by said rotatable drive mechanism said drive mechanism being offset from a center of said cover plate and having a first arm operatively connected to said first locking member, said drive mechanism further including a second arm operatively connected to said second locking member by way of said linkage, said drive mechanism having a locking rotational position wherein said first locking member and said second locking member are in said locked position and an unlocking rotational position wherein said first locking member and said second locking member are in said unlocked position. 13. A corrosion-resistant self-locking manhole cover, comprising: a cover plate having an upper side and a lower side, said lower side being adapted to rest on a manhole cover support surface of a manhole frame so that said upper side is substantially flush with a top portion of said manhole frame and a surrounding surface in which said manhole frame is situated;an anchor mounted on said cover plate lower side, said anchor being adapted to engage said manhole frame at a first location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said first location;a locking member mounted on said cover plate lower side, said anchor being movable between a locked position in which said locking member is adapted to engage said manhole frame at a second location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said second location, and an unlocked position in which said locking member is not adapted to engage said manhole frame;said anchor, said locking member and said cover plate comprising nonmetallic corrosion resistant material;fasteners securing said anchor and said locking member to said cover plate, said fasteners being made of metal and having fastener heads sealed within associated counterbores with sealing plugs, said counterbores and said sealing plugs being made of non-metallic corrosion-resistant material in order to seal said fastener heads against exposure to environmental gases, said sealing plugs being removable to allow access to said fastener heads;a rotary drive mechanism operable to move said locking member between said locked position and said unlocked position, said rotary drive mechanism comprising a rotatable security lock bolt made of metal, said security lock bolt having a security lock face on said cover plate upper side to receive a security key, and a shank that extends below said cover plate lower side, said shank receiving a metallic nut to secure said security lock bolt to said locking member and said cover plate lower side, and said shank and said nut being covered by components made of non-metallic corrosion-resistant material in order to seal said shank and said nut against exposure to environmental gases, said components including an end cap that is removable to allow access to said nut; anda biasing mechanism operable to bias said locking member to said locked position, said biasing mechanism comprising one or more springs made of corrosion-resistant metal and being exposed to environmental gases. 14. A corrosion resistant self-locking manhole cover, comprising: a nonmetallic corrosion-resistant cover plate having an upper side and a lower side, said lower side being adapted to rest on a manhole cover support surface of a manhole frame so that said upper side is substantially flush with a top portion of said manhole frame and a surrounding surface in which said manhole frame is situated;a first nonmetallic corrosion-resistant locking member mounted on said cover plate lower side, said first locking member being movable between a locked position in which said first locking member is adapted to engage said manhole frame at a first location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said first location, and an unlocked position in which said first locking member is not adapted to engage said manhole frame;a second nonmetallic corrosion-resistant locking member mounted on said cover plate lower side, said second locking member being is movable between a locked position in which said second locking member is adapted to engage said manhole frame at a second location in a manner that resists lifting of said cover plate proximate to said second location, and an unlocked position in which said second locking member is not adapted to engage said manhole frame;a spring mechanism adapted to bias said first locking member and said second locking member to said extended position;an aperture on said cover plate upper side;a rotary drive mechanism operable to move said locking member between said locked position and said unlocked position, said rotary drive mechanism comprising a rotatable security lock bolt made of metal, said security lock bolt having a security lock face on said cover plate upper side to receive a security key, and a shank that extends below said cover plate lower side, said shank receiving a metallic nut to secure said security lock bolt to said locking member and said cover plate lower side, and said shank and said nut being covered by components made of non-metallic corrosion-resistant material in order to seal said shank and said nut against exposure to environmental gases, said components including an end cap that is removable to allow access to said nut;a first non-metallic corrosion resistant drive arm operatively driven by said rotatable lock bolt, said first drive arm operatively engaging said first locking member and having a locking rotational position wherein said first locking member is in said extended position and an unlocking rotational position wherein said first locking member is in said retracted position;a second non-metallic corrosion resistant drive arm operatively driven by said rotatable lock bolt, said second drive arm operatively engaging said second locking member and having a locking rotational position wherein said second locking member is in said extended position and an unlocking rotational position wherein said second locking member is in said refracted position;a nonmetallic corrosion-resistant latch arm operatively driven by said rotatable lock bolt; anda nonmetallic corrosion-resistant latch on said cover plate adapted to releasably retain said latch arm in said unlocking rotational position without said security lock being engaged by said security key tool. 15. A manhole cover in accordance with claim 14 wherein said second drive arm comprises said latch arm.
