The door control apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a light emitter connected to the control circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured, upon receipt of the indication of the detection event, to signal the light emitter to produce light. 3. The door control apparatus of claim 2, wherein the light emitter comprises at least one light emitting diode. 4. The door control apparatus of claim 3, wherein the control circuitry is configured to signal the light emitter to change a status of the light emitter a first predetermined time after the sensor detects nothing in the designated area. 5. The door control apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a housing in which the control circuitry, light emitter, and sensor are disposed, wherein the housing is configured to be mounted to a structure adjacent to a door. 6. The door control apparatus of claim 1, wherein the control circuitry is configured to produce the door hold open signal to signal the door closer to initiate door closing after a predetermined time, measured by the timer. 7. The door control apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a laser diode light emission device. 8. The door control apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a sound emitter connected to the control circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to selectively control the sound emitter to produce a sound. 9. The door control apparatus according to claim 1, wherein: the door closer is operatively connected to a hinged door;the detection event from the sensor indicates a person, object, or both proximate to at least a swept path of the hinged door; andthe electronic control circuitry further comprises a sensor signal input port configured to receive the detection event from the sensor, and a door hold open signal output port, and in response to receipt of the detection event, to start the timer and generate the door hold open signal, and to cease the door hold open signal after the timer indicates passage of a predetermined period of time. 10. The door control apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the electronic control circuitry further comprises a wireless receiver, the electronic control circuitry being configured to selectively respond to a signal wirelessly received through the wireless receiver. 11. The door control apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising a collapsible toggle linkage controlled by the electrical solenoid device, configured to be selectively operative to hold open and permit closure of the hinged door, in response to the door hold open signal. 12. The door control apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the electronic control circuitry is configured to produce a signal effective to activate at least one indicator selected from the group consisting of an audible and a visual indicator of a status of the control circuitry to a proximate person. 13. The door control apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the door control apparatus is configured to close the hinged door after a preset period regardless of a state of the door hold open signal. 14. The door control apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the door closer is configured to close the door independent of the electronic control circuitry after a predetermined. 15. A door control method, comprising: providing: electronic control circuitry having a timer, configured to receive an indication of a detection event from a non-contact sensor configured to be mountable near a top of a door frame for the door, and to produce a door hold open signal dependent on the timer and the received indication of a detection event;a door closer having an energy storage element which supplies a closing force for the door closer dependent on previously stored energy from a preceding door opening force;a hold-open comprising an electrical solenoid device operating in response to the door hold open signal to selectively displace an armature to brake movement of an element that moves in conjunction with the door, wherein the hold open does not provide a braking force greater than the closing force, the hold-open being configured to:(i) selectively retain a door in an arbitrary open position based on an activation of the electrical solenoid device, the electrical solenoid device being configured to selectively hold the door closer at the arbitrary open position without providing a counterforce to the closing force, in response to a first state of the door hold open signal, and(ii) selectively release the door to passively close in a fail-safe manner using the previously stored energy derived from the preceding door opening force, in response to at least one of: (1) a second state of the door hold open signal constituting a release signal, and (2) a failure condition associated with a loss of power to the electronic control circuitry;receiving an indication of a detection event from a sensor and producing the door hold open signal dependent on a status of the timer and the received indication of the detection event; andselectively controlling the electrical solenoid device in response to the door hold open signal. 16. The door control method according to claim 15, further comprising providing a fail-safe timer, the hold open being configured to selectively release the door to passively close in a fail-safe manner using the previously stored energy derived from the preceding door opening force, further in response to at least an expiration of the fail-safe timer, effective to initiate a door closure independent of the door hold open signal, whereby the door closer is fail safe with respect to failure of a control which generates the door hold open signal. 17. The door control method of claim 15, wherein said door hold open signal is produced to hold open the door while the detection event is indicated, and based on a change in the status of the timer, regardless of the detection event, permit door closing. 18. The door control method according to claim 15, further comprising wirelessly receiving control instructions from another system, said selectively controlling being further dependent on the wirelessly received control instructions. 19. A door control apparatus, comprising: (a) a housing;(b) a non-contact sensor configured to be mountable near a top of a door frame for a door:(c) a microprocessor, within the housing, configured to: (i) receive a sensor input from the non-contact sensor corresponding to an occupancy state in at least a path of travel through a doorway;(ii) implement a timer; and(iii) produce a door hold open signal in dependence on both the sensor input and the timer,(d) a door closer, within the housing, comprising a hold-open solenoid responsive to the door hold open signal to selectively displace an armature to brake movement of an element that moves in conjunction with the door, wherein the hold open does not provide a braking force greater than the closing force, the hold-open being, and a door closure spring, configured to supply a door closure force dependent on a force derived from a prior door opening, configured to: (i) selectively retain a door in an arbitrary open position against a spring force of the door closure spring dependent on a first state of the solenoid, wherein the solenoid does not supply a force which counters the door closure force, and(ii) selectively release the door to passively close in a fail-safe manner using the spring force derived from the prior door opening, dependent on at least one of (1) a second state of the solenoid constituting a release signal, wherein the solenoid is deactivated, and (2) a failure condition associated with a loss of power to the electronic control circuitry,wherein the microprocessor controls the state of the door hold open signal to maintain the door closer in an open position when the sensor detects occupancy in the path of travel through the doorway and the timer is unexpired, and releases the door closer to assume a close position when the sensor does not detect occupancy in the path of travel through the doorway or the timer expires. 20. The door control apparatus according to claim 19, wherein the solenoid operates to lock a mechanical element of the door closer in position to impede door closing.
