1. A scented article, comprising, at least one olfactory-active composition,a rod comprising an absorbent matrix material formed of multiple types of paper or pulp composition, the multiple types of paper or pulp composition comprising; a first type of paper or pulp composition disposed at an interior of the rod, the first type of paper or pulp composition having a first porosity, anda second type of paper or pulp composition disposed at an outer surface of the rod, the second type of paper or pulp composition having a second porosity different from the first porosity, anda coating composition disposed on an exterior surface of the outer portion of the rod and covering at least a portion of the rod, wherein the coating composition comprises a wax, soy wax, paraffin, bees wax, polyethylene wax, microcrystalline wax, waxes that soften or melt at a temperature greater than about 150 F, acrylates, polylactide, polyglycolide or polycaprolactone, or a polyester copolymer selected from poly(lactide/glycolide) acid (PLGA) or poly(lactid-co-epsilon-caprolact-one) (PLCL), alkyl- or alkoxyalkyl-2-cyanoacrylates, n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, 2-methoxybutyl-2-cyanoacrylate, crosslinked cyanoacrylate, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, lactic-glycolic acid copolymers, polycaprolactone, lactic acid-caprolactone copolymers, poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid, polyorthoesters, polyalkyl acrylates, copolymers of alkylacrylate and vinyl acetate, polyalkyl methacrylates, copolymers of alkyl methacrylates and butadiene; dioctyl phthalate, dimethyl sebacate, trethyl phosphate, tri(2-ethylhexy)phosphate, tri(p-cresyl)phosphate, glyceryl triacetate, glyceryl tributyrate, diethyl sebacate, dioctyl adipate, isopropyl myristate, butyl stearate, lauric acid, dibutyl phthalate, trioctyl trimellitate, dioctyl glutarate, glaze, starch, or a starch derivative;wherein the at least one olfactory-active composition is releasably retained in the absorbent matrix material. 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the absorbent matrix material comprises a sheet of porous paper wound about a central longitudinal axis to form a multilayered paper rod. 3. The article of claim 2, wherein the paper rod defines a chamber extending along the central longitudinal axis of the rod between a first open end and a second open end. 4. The article of claim 3, further comprising a gel or liquid, wherein the chamber is adapted to contain the gel or liquid and wherein the gel or liquid is disposed therein the chamber. 5. The article of claim 1, wherein the absorbent matrix material has a void volume of about 1.0% to about 99% of the total volume of the structural component. 6. The article of claim 4, wherein the gel or liquid comprises at least one olfactory-active composition. 7. The article of claim 1, wherein the coating covers more than 50% of the structural component. 8. The scented article of claim 1, wherein the coating composition is configured to at least partially inhibit release of the at least one olfactory-active composition from the absorbent matrix material. 9. The scented article of claim 1, wherein the coating composition is disposed on an external surface of the rod. 10. The scented article of claim 9, wherein the coating composition is disposed on the external surface of the rod in a pattern. 11. The scented article of claim 1, wherein the structural component comprises multiple layers of the absorbent matrix material. 12. The scented article of claim 11, wherein the coating composition covers at least a portion of at least one of the multiple layers of the absorbent matrix material. 13. The scented article of claim 1, wherein the first type of paper or pulp composition has a density that is lower than a density of the second type of paper or pulp composition. 14. The scented article of claim 1, wherein the first type of paper or pulp composition has a first number of perforations per unit area and the second type of paper or pulp composition has a second number of perforations per unit area, the first number different from the second number. 15. An article comprising: an absorbent matrix material wound about a central axis to form a multilayered paper rod, the absorbent matrix material having a first number of perforations per unit area toward the center of the rod and a second number of perforations per unit area toward an outer surface of the rod, the first number different from the second number;an olfactory-active composition releasably retained in the absorbent matrix material; anda coating composition covering at least a portion of the multilayered paper rod, the coating composition comprising one or more of a wax, a polymer, a starch, or a starch derivative. 16. The article of claim 15, wherein the coating composition is disposed on an external surface of the multilayered paper rod. 17. The article of claim 16, wherein the absorbent matrix material comprises a mineral. 18. The article of claim 15, wherein the absorbent matrix material comprises: a first type of paper toward the center of the rod, the first type of paper having the first number of perforations per unit area; anda second type of paper toward the outer surface of the rod, the second type of paper having the second number of perforations per unit area. 19. The article of claim 18, wherein the coating composition is disposed on the outer surface of the rod. 20. An article comprising: an absorbent matrix material that is at least partially coated with a coating composition, wherein the coated absorbent matrix material is wound about a central axis to form a multilayered paper rod, and wherein the coating composition comprises one or more of a wax, a polymer, a starch, or a starch derivative, and wherein the absorbent matrix material has a first porosity toward the center of the rod and a second porosity different from the first porosity toward an outer surface of the rod; andan olfactory-active composition releasably retained in the absorbent matrix material. 21. The article of claim 20, wherein the coating composition coats substantially all of the absorbent matrix material. 22. The article of claim 20, wherein the multilayered paper rod is formed of multiple layers of the absorbent matrix material, and wherein the coating composition coats substantially all of at least one of the layers of the absorbent matrix material. 23. The article of claim 20, wherein the multilayered paper rod is formed of multiple layers of the absorbent matrix material, and wherein the coating composition at least partially coats at least one of the layers of the absorbent matrix material. 24.
