The present invention is directed to a method and automated transfer means for transferring a container within an apparatus. The apparatus of the present invention may include a means for automated loading, a means for automated transfer and/or a means for automated unloading of a container (e.g., a specimen container). In one embodiment, the apparatus can be an automated detection apparatus for rapid non-invasive detection of a microbial agent in a test sample. The detection system also including a heated enclosure, a holding means or rack, and/or a detection unit for monitoring and/or interrogating the specimen container to detect whether the container is positive for the presence of a microbial agent. In other embodiment, the automated instrument may include one or more, bar code readers, scanners, cameras, and/or weighing stations to aid in scanning, reading, imaging and weighing of specimen containers within the system.

A detection apparatus for rapid non-invasive detection of microorganism growth in a specimen sample, comprising: (a) a sealable specimen container having an internal chamber with a culture medium disposed therein for culturing any microorganisms that may be present in said specimen sample;(b) a housing enclosing an interior chamber therein, said housing further comprising an entrance location therein configured to receive said specimen container in a vertical orientation;(c) a holding structure contained within said housing and comprising a plurality of horizontally oriented wells for holding one or more of said specimen containers;(d) a detection unit located within said interior chamber for the detection of microorganism growth in said specimen container; and(e) a multi-axis robotic transfer arm within said housing configured to automatically transfer said specimen container from said entrance location to said holding structure, wherein said multi-axis robotic transfer arm comprises:at least one horizontal support rail in a first horizontal axis and a moveable vertical support rail, wherein said vertical support rail is supported by said at least one horizontal support rail and moveable along said horizontal support rail,a horizontal slide rail in a second horizontal axis, said horizontal slide rail supporting a movable robotic head and gripper mechanism, wherein said robotic head and gripper mechanism are moveable along said horizontal slide rail in said second horizontal axis away from and toward said holding structure, andwherein said horizontal slide rail further comprises a pivot plate and a pivot slot, wherein said robotic head and gripper mechanism is coupled to said pivot plate and said pivot plate further comprises a moveable pivot slot cam follower, wherein said cam follower is moveable between a first position in said pivot slot and a second position in said pivot slot, and wherein said robotic head and gripping mechanism rotate from a vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation by said movement of said cam follower from said first position in said pivot slot to said second position in said pivot slot. 2. The detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein said interior chamber comprises an incubation chamber, said incubation chamber comprising one or more heating elements to provide and/or maintain a climate-controlled interior chamber for promoting and/or enhancing microorganism growth therein. 3. The detection system of claim 1, wherein said holding structure further comprises an agitation assembly for agitating said specimen container to promote and/or enhance microorganism growth therein. 4. The detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein said multi-axis robotic transfer arm further comprises two horizontal support rails, wherein said vertical support rail is supported by said horizontal support rails, and wherein said vertical support rail moveable along said horizontal support rails in the first horizontal axis. 5. The detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein said gripping mechanism is configured to pick-up, grip or otherwise hold said specimen container. 6. The detection apparatus of claim 5, wherein said gripping mechanism comprises two or more gripping fingers to pick-up, grip or otherwise hold said specimen container. 7. The detection apparatus of claim 6, wherein said gripping mechanism comprises a linear actuator and a linear actuator motor, and wherein said linear actuator motor is configured to move said linear actuator to open and close said gripper fingers. 8. A detection apparatus for rapid non-invasive detection of microorganism growth in a specimen sample, comprising: (a) a sealable specimen container having an internal chamber with a culture medium disposed therein for culturing any microorganisms that may be present in said specimen sample;(b) a housing enclosing an interior chamber therein, said housing further comprising an entrance location therein with said specimen container received in said entrance location in a vertical orientation;(c) a holding structure contained within said housing and comprising a plurality of horizontally oriented wells for holding one or more of said specimen containers;(d) a detection unit located within said interior chamber for the detection of microorganism growth in said specimen container; and(e) a multi-axis robotic transfer arm within said housing configured to automatically transfer said specimen container from said entrance location to said holding structure, wherein said multi-axis robotic transfer arm comprises a horizontal slide rail in a horizontal axis, wherein said horizontal slide rail supports a moveable robotic head and gripper mechanism, said robotic head and gripper mechanism moveable along said horizontal slide rail from a first position to a second position in said horizontal axis away from and toward the holding structure, and wherein said robotic head and gripper mechanism rotate from a vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation by movement of said robotic head and gripper mechanism along said horizontal slide rail from said first position to said second position. 9. The detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein said interior chamber comprises an incubation chamber, said incubation chamber comprising one or more heating elements to provide and/or maintain a climate-controlled interior chamber for promoting and/or enhancing microorganism growth therein. 10. The detection system of claim 8, wherein said holding structure further comprises an agitation assembly for agitating said specimen container to promote and/or enhance microorganism growth therein. 11. The detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein said horizontal slide further comprises a pivot plate and a pivot slot, wherein said robotic head and gripping mechanism is coupled to said pivot plate, and wherein said pivot plate further comprises a moveable pivot slot cam follower, said cam follower moveable from a first position in said pivot slot to a second position in said pivot slot and thereby pivoting said pivot plate and said robotic head and gripping mechanism about a horizontal axis. 12. The detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein said multi-axis robotic transfer arm further comprises two horizontal support rails and a vertical support rail, wherein said vertical support rail is supported by said horizontal support rails, and wherein said vertical support rail is moveable along said horizontal support rails in a first horizontal axis. 13. The detection apparatus of claim 12, wherein said multi-axis robotic transfer arm further comprises said robotic head and gripper mechanism, wherein said robotic head is supported by said vertical support rail, and wherein said robotic head and gripper mechanism are movable along said vertical support rail in a vertical axis. 14. The detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein said gripper mechanism is configured to pick-up, grip or otherwise hold said specimen container. 15. The detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein said gripper mechanism comprises two or more gripping fingers to pick-up, grip or otherwise hold said specimen container. 16. A method for automated transfer of a specimen container within a detection apparatus, said method comprising the following steps: (a) providing a detection apparatus for rapid non-invasive detection of microorganism growth in a specimen sample as claimed in claim 1;(b) inoculating said specimen container with a test sample to be tested for the presence of said microorganism;(c) loading said inoculated specimen container into said detection system using an automated loading mechanism; and(d) transferring said inoculated specimen container from said entrance location in said housing to said holding structure with said multi-axis robotic transfer arm. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said interior chamber comprises an incubation chamber, said incubation chamber comprising one or more heating elements to provide and/or maintain a climate-controlled interior chamber for promoting and/or enhancing microorganism growth therein. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein said detection system further comprises a container locator device configured to move said specimen container to one or more work-flow stations for obtaining one or more measurements or readings of the specimen container, and wherein said method further comprises moving said specimen container to one or more work-flow stations using said container locator device. 19. The method of claim 18, wherein said method further comprises moving said specimen container to a pick-up station using said container locator device, and subsequently picking-up said specimen container from said pick-up station using said transfer means. 20. The method of claim 16, wherein said method further comprises as step (e) periodically monitoring said specimen container for detection of one or more by-products of microorganism growth, wherein said specimen container is determined as positive for microorganism growth by the detection of said one or more by-products of microorganism growth therein. 21. The method of claim 16, wherein said detection apparatus further comprises a controller, and wherein said controller is operable to control one or more steps of said method. 22. The detection apparatus of claim 15, wherein said gripping mechanism comprises a linear actuator, a linear actuator motor, and wherein said linear actuator motor is configured to move said linear actuator to open and close said gripping fingers.
