A system and method for aiming and alignment of a shell firing weapon includes a portable aiming unit that may be located in close proximity to the weapon that includes a reference head for emitting and/or receiving at least one energy ray. The portable aiming unit can be aligned to a reference azimuth, either absolute or relative. A sighting unit is also included in the system and removably mounted to the weapon. The sighting unit includes a reference head that is complementary to the reference head of the portable aiming unit. The at least one energy ray established between the portable aiming unit and the sighting unit provides an accurate relative reference of directing the weapons fire and monitoring linear and angular displacement of the weapon as it is fired so that corrections can be made in aiming the weapon in response thereto.

An aiming and alignment system for a shell firing weapon, comprising: a portable aiming unit radially displaced from the weapon, said portable aiming unit including an orientation acquisition device actuating to establish at least an azimuth reference, said portable aiming unit including a first reference head; anda sighting unit mounted to the weapon for aligning the weapon according to an azimuth and an elevation established relative to said portable aiming unit, said sighting unit including a second reference head, said first and second reference heads cooperatively establishing at least one low energy beam therebetween as an angular reference; a sighting processor determining an azimuth of the weapon at said sighting unit based on angular offset from the low energy beam;wherein one of said first and second reference heads includes a plurality of emission points defining an emitter constellation, and the other of said first and second reference heads includes a sensor receiving emissions of the emitter constellation. 2. The system as recited in claim 1, where said radial displacement of said portable aiming unit is a distance of less than 5 meters. 3. The system as recited in claim 2, where said radial displacement of said portable aiming unit is a distance of 2 meters. 4. The system as recited in claim 1, where said sighting unit is an optical sighting device having said second reference head mounted thereto. 5. The system as recited in claim 4, where said second reference head is mounted to an eyepiece of said sighting unit. 6. The system as recited in claim 5, where said second reference head includes an imaging sensor for detecting a constellation of emissions from said first reference head. 7. The system as recited in claim 4, where said second reference head includes an imaging sensor for detecting a constellation of emissions from said first reference head. 8. The system as recited in claim 4, where said sighting unit includes said sighting processor and a display device coupled to said sighting processor. 9. The system as recited in claim 4, further comprising a display device located remote from said sighting unit and in communication therewith, where said sighting processor is also located remote from said sighting unit and in communication therewith. 10. The system as recited in claim 1, where said sighting unit includes said sighting processor and a display device coupled to said sighting processor. 11. The system as recited in claim 1, further comprising a display device located remote from said sighting unit and in communication therewith, where said sighting processor is also located remote from said sighting unit and in communication therewith. 12. The system as recited in claim 11, where said sighting processor and a display device is a tablet computing device or personal digital assistant. 13. The system as recited in claim 1, where said portable aiming unit includes a processor and communication unit coupled to said first reference head and the orientation acquisition device includes at least a compass coupled to the processor and communication unit for providing a signal corresponding to said azimuth reference. 14. The system as recited in claim 13, where said compass is a fluxgate compass. 15. The system as recited in claim 13, where said first reference head further includes an accelerometer for at least one axis coupled to the processor and communication unit. 16. The system as recited in claim 13, where said first reference head further includes a touch screen display coupled to said processor and communication unit for input and output of data therebetween. 17. The system as recited in claim 1, where said portable aiming unit includes a housing supporting said first reference head and a processor and communication unit removably mounted to said housing and in communication therewith, said processor and communication unit a having display device coupled thereto. 18. The system as recited in claim 1, where said sighting unit uses said at least one low energy beam between said first and second reference heads to monitor actual firing orientation on a round-by-round basis. 19. The system as recited in claim 1, where said portable aiming unit uses said at least one low energy beam between said first and second reference heads to monitor actual firing orientation on a round-by-round basis.
