A computer is used to create a plan for repositioning an orthodontic patient's teeth. The computer receives an initial digital data set representing the patient's teeth at their initial positions and a final digital data set representing the teeth at their final positions. The computer then uses the data sets to generate treatment paths along which the teeth will move from the initial positions to the final positions.

1. A fabrication system for producing orthodontic appliances configured to reposition a patient's teeth, the system comprising: one or more processors;a tangible computer readable medium operatively coupled with the one or more processors and storing non-transitory instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to: receive an initial digital data set representing the teeth at an initial arrangement, andgenerate a treatment plan comprising a plurality of three-dimensional digital data sets defining a series of arrangements for the teeth including one or more intermediate arrangements toward which the teeth will move while moving from the initial arrangement toward a final arrangement;a mold producing machine configured to produce a series of positive tooth model molds corresponding to the series of arrangements for the teeth; anda molding machine configured to at least partially form each of a series of orthodontic appliances configured to move the teeth from the initial arrangement toward the final arrangement by forming a dental appliance material over a respective one of the positive tooth model molds, wherein the system is configured to produce the series of orthodontic appliances at a stage of treatment prior to the patient wearing any appliance of the series of orthodontic appliances so as to reposition the teeth. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the initial digital data set includes a three-dimensional (3D) graphical representation of the teeth. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the mold producing machine selectively hardens a liquid to form the positive tooth model molds. 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the liquid is hardened layer by layer in a plurality of layers, each layer containing a cross section having an edge defined by the respective digital data set in the shape of at least one crown of the teeth, the layers being stacked so the edges form a three-dimensional surface having a shape matching the shape of the at least one crown of the teeth. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the mold producing machine is configured to receive and use the digital data sets defining the series of arrangements in producing the series of positive tooth model molds. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein cavities of the series of appliances have different geometries shaped to receive and reposition the teeth from the initial arrangement to the final arrangement. 7. A system for producing orthodontic appliances configured to reposition a patient's teeth, the system comprising: one or more processors; anda tangible computer readable medium operatively coupled with the one or more processors and storing non-transitory instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to: receive an initial digital data set representing the teeth at an initial arrangement;generate a treatment plan comprising a plurality of three-dimensional digital data sets defining a series of arrangements for the teeth including one or more intermediate arrangements toward which the teeth will move while moving from the initial arrangement toward a final arrangement; andtransmit data, which is based on the three-dimensional digital data sets, to a mold producing machine configured to produce a series of positive tooth model molds corresponding to the series of arrangements for the teeth, the series of positive tooth model molds being configured for use with a molding machine configured to at least partially form each of a series of orthodontic appliances configured to move the teeth from the initial arrangement toward the final arrangement by forming a dental appliance material over a respective one of the positive tooth model molds, wherein the system is configured to produce the series of orthodontic appliances at a stage of treatment prior to the patient wearing any appliance of the series of orthodontic appliances so as to reposition the teeth. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to receive a user input and alter at least one of the group consisting of a position and an orientation of at least one of the teeth in at least one of the intermediate arrangements in response to the user input. 9. The system of claim 7, wherein the system is operable to create a segmented initial data set from the initial digital data set, the segmented initial data set including a separately repositionable model for each of a plurality of the teeth in the initial digital data set. 10. The system of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to receive information regarding progress of repositioning the teeth following administration of the series of appliances to the patient. 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the information received regarding progress of repositioning the teeth comprises an in-course digital data set representing a measured arrangement of the teeth following administration of the series of appliances to the patient. 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause display of a graphical representation of the teeth in the measured arrangement. 13. The system of claim 11, wherein generation of the in-course digital data set representing the measured arrangement of the patient's teeth includes scanning the patient's teeth or a physical model thereof. 14. The system of claim 11, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to generate a revised treatment plan comprising a second series of distinct tooth arrangements including one or more revised intermediate arrangements toward which the teeth will move while moving from the measured arrangement toward the final arrangement. 15. A method for fabricating orthodontic appliances configured to reposition a patient's teeth, the method comprising: receiving a plurality of digital data sets defining a series of different arrangements for the teeth including one or more intermediate arrangements toward which the teeth will move while moving from an initial arrangement toward a final arrangement;using a mold producing machine to fabricate a series of different positive tooth model molds corresponding to the series of different arrangements for the teeth; andproducing a series of different orthodontic appliances by forming a dental appliance material over each positive tooth model mold of the series of different positive tooth model molds, wherein the series of different orthodontic appliances are produced at a stage of treatment prior to the patient wearing any appliance of the series of different orthodontic appliances so as to reposition the teeth. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the mold producing machine selectively hardens a liquid to form the series of different positive tooth model molds. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the liquid is hardened layer by layer in a plurality of layers, each layer containing a cross section having an edge defined by a respective digital data set of the plurality of digital data sets in the shape of at least one crown of the teeth, the layers being stacked so the edges form a three-dimensional surface having a shape matching the shape of the at least one crown of the teeth. 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the mold producing machine is configured to receive the plurality of digital data sets defining the series of different arrangements for the teeth. 19. The method of claim 15, wherein cavities of the series of different orthodontic appliances have different geometries shaped to receive and reposition the teeth from the initial arrangement to the final arrangement. 20. The method of claim 15, wherein the plurality of digital data sets defining the series of different arrangements for the teeth include a plurality of three-dimensional digital data sets defining the series of different arrangements for the teeth.
