A recreational sport boat includes a hull, having starboard and port sides and a transom, and a pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom. One of the wake-modifying devices is positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices is positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline. Each wake-modifying device includes a plate-like member and at least one downturned surface at a trailing portion of the plate-like member. Each wake-modifying device is pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal. When a wake-modifying device is in the deployed position, the downturned surface is lower than it is in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake.

A recreational sport boat comprising: a hull including starboard and port sides and a transom; anda pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom, one of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline, each wake-modifying device being pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal, each wake-modifying device including:a plate-like member; andat least two downturned surfaces at a trailing portion of the plate-like member, the two downturned surfaces being at an obtuse angle relative to each other,wherein in the deployed position, the downturned surfaces are lower than they are in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake. 2. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein the pivot axis of each wake-modifying device is at an oblique angle relative to the transom. 3. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein the plate-like member and the at least two downturned surfaces of each wake-modifying device are an integral piece. 4. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein the plate-like member and the at least two downturned surfaces of each wake-modifying device are separate pieces joined together. 5. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein at least one of the downturned surfaces of each wake-modifying device is at a trailing edge of the plate-like member. 6. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein an angle between each of the downturned surfaces of each wake-modifying device and a lower surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is between about 120° to about 135° . 7. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein each of the downturned surfaces of each wake-modifying device extends between about 1 inch to about 2¼ inches below a lower surface of the plate-like member. 8. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein the obtuse angle is between about 135° to about 150° . 9. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein a first one of the downturned surfaces is outboard of a second one of the downturned surfaces for each wake-modifying device. 10. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein each wake-modifying device further includes at least one upturned surface at an outboard portion of the plate-like member, between one of the downturned surfaces and the pivot axis. 11. The recreational sport boat of claim 10, wherein an angle between the upturned surface of each wake-modifying device and an upper surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is about 90° . 12. The recreational sport boat of claim 10, wherein the upturned surface of each wake-modifying device extends at least about 1 inch above an upper surface of the plate-like member. 13. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, wherein each wake-modifying device is capable of assuming multiple deployed positions, and in each different deployed position the wake-modifying device is pivoted downwardly at a different angle relative to the non-deployed position. 14. The recreational sport boat of claim 1, further comprising a pair of linear actuators, each linear actuator being operable to move a respective one of the wake-modifying devices between its non-deployed position and its deployed position. 15. The recreational sport boat of claim 14, further comprising a controller configured to drive the linear actuators to deploy the starboard wake-modifying device in order to create a port-side surf wake and to deploy the port wake-modifying device in order to create a starboard-side surf wake. 16. A recreational sport boat comprising: a hull including starboard and port sides and a transom; anda pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom, one of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline, each wake-modifying device being pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal, each wake-modifying device including:a plate-like member;a first downturned surface at an inboard portion of the plate-like member, the first downturned surface lying in a first plane;a second downturned surface at a trailing portion of the plate-like member, the second downturned surface lying in a second plane which intersects the first plane; andat least one fin attached to a lower surface of the plate-like member,wherein in the deployed position, the second downturned surface is lower than it is in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake. 17. The recreational sport boat of claim 16, wherein the first downturned surface of each wake-modifying device is at an inboard edge of the plate-like member. 18. The recreational sport boat of claim 17, wherein the first downturned surface and the plate-like member of each wake-modifying device are an integral piece. 19. The recreational sport boat of claim 16, wherein the second downturned surface and the plate-like member of each wake-modifying device are separate pieces joined together. 20. The recreational sport boat of claim 16, wherein each wake modifying device includes at least two parallel fins attached to a lower surface of the plate-like member. 21. The recreational sport boat of claim 16, further comprising a pair of linear actuators, each linear actuator being operable to move a respective one of the wake-modifying devices between its non-deployed position and its deployed position. 22. The recreational sport boat of claim 21, further comprising a controller configured to drive the linear actuators to deploy the starboard wake-modifying device in order to create a port-side surf wake and to deploy the port wake-modifying device in order to create a starboard-side surf wake. 23. A recreational sport boat comprising: a hull including starboard and port sides and a transom; anda pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom, one of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline, each wake-modifying device being pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal, each wake-modifying device including: a plate-like member;at least one downturned surface at an inboard portion of the plate-like member, the at least one downturned surface constituting at least part of an inboard edge of the plate-like member and extending from a leading portion to a trailing portion of the plate-like member; andat least one upturned surface at an outboard portion of the plate-like member, the at least one upturned surface constituting at least part of an outboard edge of the plate-like member and lying in a plane that intersects the pivot axis,wherein in the deployed position, the trailing portion of the plate-like member is lower than it is in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake. 24. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein each wake-modifying device is attached to the transom. 25. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein the pivot axis of each wake-modifying device is spaced a distance aft of the transom. 26. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein the pivot axis of each wake-modifying device is at an oblique angle relative to the transom. 27. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein the plate-like member, the at least one downturned surface, and the at least one upturned surface of each wake-modifying device are an integral piece. 28. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein an angle between the at least one upturned surface of each wake-modifying device and an upper surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is about 90°. 29. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, further comprising a pair of linear actuators, each linear actuator being operable to move a respective one of the wake-modifying devices between its non-deployed position and its deployed position. 30. The recreational sport boat of claim 29, further comprising a controller configured to drive the linear actuators to deploy the starboard wake-modifying device in order to create a port-side surf wake and to deploy the port wake-modifying device in order to create a starboard-side surf wake. 31. The recreational sport boat of claim 23, wherein the at least one upturned surface of the port wake-modifying device is generally parallel to the port side of the hull, and the at least one upturned surface of the starboard wake-modifying device is generally parallel to the starboard side of the hull. 32. A recreational sport boat comprising: a hull including starboard and port sides and a transom; anda pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom, one of the wake- modifying devices being positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices being positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline, each wake- modifying device being pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal, each wake-modifying device including:a plate-like member;a first downturned surface at an inboard portion of the plate-like member, the first downturned surface lying in a first plane; anda second downturned surface located entirely within a trailing portion of the plate-like member, the second downturned surface lying in a second plane which intersects the first plane,wherein in the deployed position, the second downturned surface is lower than it is in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake. 33. The recreational sport boat of claim 32, wherein the first plane intersects the pivot axis. 34. The recreational sport boat of claim 33, wherein the second plane is substantially parallel to the pivot axis. 35. The recreational sport boat of claim 33, wherein the second plane is substantially perpendicular to the first plane. 36. The recreational sport boat of claim 32, wherein each wake-modifying device is attached to the transom. 37. The recreational sport boat of claim 32, wherein the pivot axis of each wake-modifying device is spaced a distance aft of the transom. 38. The recreational sport boat of claim 32, wherein the pivot axis of each wake-modifying device is at an oblique angle relative to the transom. 39. The recreational sport boat of claim 32, wherein the plate-like member, the first downturned surface, and the second downturned surface of each wake-modifying device are an integral piece. 40.
