An animal litter with increased moisture retention and accelerated absorbency, a method of manufacture and method of use for indoor urine and feces disposal. An animal litter with a greater surface area and higher moisture retention intended for animals as small as mice, gerbils and hamsters, as well as larger domestic animals. The animal litter is a paper and wood composition treated with a surfactant, which increases moisture retention four to five times its weight.

1. A method for manufacturing animal litter, comprising: providing a milled paper material;combining the milled paper material with a bentonite to form a mixture;pelletizing the mixture to form litter pellets; andgranulating the litter pellets to form litter granules, flakes, or both, wherein bentonite is present in an amount of from 20 to 40 percent by weight of the animal litter. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, prior to the step of pelletizing, adding a milled wood material to the milled paper material and the bentonite to form the mixture. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising adding a surfactant prior to the step of granulating, the surfactant being present in an amount of from 1 to 5 weight percent based on the weight of the animal litter. 4. The method of claim 2 further comprising adding a surfactant prior to the step of granulating, the surfactant being present in an amount of from 1 to 5 weight percent based on the weight of the animal litter. 5. The method of claim 1 further comprising adding to the mixture an additive selected from the group consisting of an odor control agent, a colorant agent, a fixing agent, and combinations thereof. 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising adding from 7 to 12 weight percent of a polysaccharide gum based on the weight of the animal litter. 7. The method of claim 2 further comprising adding from 7 to 12 weight percent of a polysaccharide gum based on the weight of the animal litter. 8. The method of claim 3 further comprising adding from 7 to 12 weight percent of a polysaccharide gum based on the weight of the animal litter. 9. The method of claim 4 further comprising adding from 7 to 12 weight percent of a polysaccharide gum based on the weight of the animal litter. 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising grinding the mixture prior to the step of pelletizing. 11. The method of claim 2 further comprising grinding the mixture prior to the step of pelletizing. 12. The method of claim 3 further comprising grinding the mixture prior to the step of pelletizing. 13. The method of claim 4 further comprising grinding the mixture prior to the step of pelletizing. 14. The method of claim 6 further comprising grinding the mixture prior to the step of pelletizing. 15. The method of claim 1 further comprising, after the step of pelletizing, drying the litter pellets. 16. The method of claim 1 further comprising passing the litter granules through a ¼ inch mesh sieve. 17. The method of claim 2, wherein the milled wood material, milled paper material, bentonite, optionally from 1 to 5 weight percent of surfactant, and optionally a polysaccharide gum are milled together prior to pelletizing, such that at least a portion of bentonite is compounded into and impregnated within fibers of the wood and paper materials. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein the milled paper is in the form of flakes. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the mixture is pelletized by extruding the mixture through a die, followed by drying. 20. A method for manufacturing animal litter, comprising the following steps in the order given: a) providing a mixture comprising from 20 to 40 weight percent bentonite, milled wood, milled paper, from 7 to 12 weight percent of a polysaccharide gum, from 1 to 5 weight percent of a surfactant, the milled wood and milled paper together comprising from 40 to 70 weight percent of the mixture;b) milling the mixture provided in a), during which bentonite impregnates pores in the milled wood and milled paper;c) pelletizing the mixture obtained in b) by a process comprising extruding the mixture through a die; andd) granulating the pellets obtained in c) step.
