1. An apparatus for initializing a tool, the tool configured to be moved along a wellbore and to generate information usable to determine an orientation of the tool, the apparatus comprising: at least one directional reference system configured to provide data indicative of an orientation of the at least one directional reference system with respect to a reference direction; anda mounting portion mechanically coupled to the at least one directional reference system, the mounting portion configured to be mechanically coupled to the tool while the tool is outside the wellbore such that the tool has a predetermined orientation with respect to the at least one directional reference system while the tool is outside the wellbore, the mounting portion further configured to be mechanically decoupled from the tool while the tool is within the wellbore. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprises a support structure configured to allow the apparatus to move along a surface beneath the apparatus while the tool is transported outside the wellbore. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one directional reference system comprises at least one signal receiver of a satellite navigation system, wherein the at least one signal receiver comprises two or more antennae spaced apart from one another. 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the two or more antennae comprise a first antenna and a second antenna and wherein the at least one signal receiver further comprises a processor configured to receive signals from the first antenna and the second antenna and to determine an orientation of a line extending from the first antenna to the second antenna with respect to the reference direction. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mounting portion comprises one or more fixtures or cut-outs for the tool to be fitted into. 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the mounting portion comprises one or more mounting faces, blocks, straps, clamps, snaps, latches, threaded posts or sockets for limiting movement of the tool. 7. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a second mounting portion configured to be mechanically coupled to at least one inertial navigation system. 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the at least one inertial navigation system comprises an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS). 9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising: at least one detector configured to generate a signal indicative of an orientation of the apparatus with respect to the Earth; andat least one leveler configured to level the apparatus with respect to the Earth in response to the signal. 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the information generated by the tool comprises information regarding a trajectory of the tool as the tool traverses the wellbore. 11. A method of initializing a tool, the tool configured to be moved along a wellbore and to generate information usable to determine an orientation of the tool, the method comprising: receiving a first signal indicative of an orientation of a directional reference system with respect to a reference direction;receiving a second signal indicative of the rate of angular motion of the directional reference system;receiving a third signal indicative of the rate of angular motion of the tool;determining a relative orientation of the directional reference system and the tool in response to the second signal and the third signal; anddetermining an orientation of the tool with respect to the reference direction in response to the first signal and the relative orientation. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising positioning the tool such that the tool has a predetermined orientation with respect to the directional reference system. 13. A method of initializing a tool, the tool configured to be moved along a wellbore and to generate information usable to determine an orientation of the tool, the method comprising: positioning the tool at a predetermined orientation relative to a directional reference system;generating a first signal indicative of an orientation of the directional reference system with respect to a reference direction;determining an initial orientation of the tool with respect to the reference direction in response to the first signal; andmoving the tool after determining the initial orientation of the tool. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the initial orientation of the tool is substantially horizontal with respect to the Earth and moving the tool comprises placing the tool to be substantially vertical with respect to the Earth. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the tool is at a first location when in the initial orientation and moving the tool comprising placing the tool at a second location, wherein the first location is farther from the wellbore than is the second location. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the tool is positioned for insertion into the wellbore when in the second location. 17. An apparatus for moving a tool outside of a wellbore, the tool configured to move along a wellbore and to generate information usable to determine an orientation of the tool, the apparatus comprising: a base portion;a tool receiving portion mechanically coupled to the base portion and configured to receive the tool; anda tool positioning element configured to controllably move the tool among a plurality of positions relative to the apparatus. 18. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising: at least one detector configured to generate a signal indicative of an orientation of the apparatus with respect to the Earth; andat least one support that is configured to level the apparatus with respect to the Earth in response to the signal. 19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the tool receiving portion comprises one or more mounting faces, fixtures, cut-outs, straps, clamps, snaps, latches, threaded posts, or sockets. 20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the plurality of positions comprises a first position that is horizontal with respect to the base portion and a second position that is vertical with respect to the base portion. 21. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising a mounting portion mechanically coupled to the base portion and configured to receive at least one directional reference system. 22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the tool receiving portion is configured to receive the tool such that the tool has a predetermined orientation with respect to the at least one directional reference system. 23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the at least one directional reference system comprises at least one signal receiver of a satellite navigation system. 24. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising at least one leveler configured to level the apparatus with respect to the Earth.
