A bladeless fan assembly includes a nozzle mounted on a base housing a device creating an air flow through the nozzle. The nozzle includes an interior passage receiving the air flow from the base and a mouth through which the air flow is emitted. The nozzle extends substantially orthogonally about an axis to define an opening through which air from outside the fan assembly is drawn by the air flow emitted from the mouth. The depth of the base in the direction of the axis may be no more than twice the depth of the nozzle. The assembly produces an air current without requiring a bladed fan, that is, the air flow is created by a bladeless fan.

A fan assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the depth of the base is in the range of 100 mm to 200 mm. 3. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the depth of the base is about 150 mm. 4. The fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the mixed flow impeller surrounds a lower part of the motor. 5. The fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the diffuser at least partially surrounds an upper part of the motor. 6. The fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the diffuser comprises blades. 7. The fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the diffuser is configured to increase a static pressure of the air flow emitted from the mixed flow impeller. 8. The fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the impeller comprises blades mounted on a conical hub. 9. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fan assembly has a height extending from an end of the base remote from the nozzle to an end of the nozzle remote from the base, and a width perpendicular to the height, both the height and the width being perpendicular to the said axis, and wherein the width of the base is no more than 75% the width of the nozzle. 10. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 9, wherein the motor comprises a DC brushless motor. 11. A bladeless fan assembly for creating an air current, the fan assembly comprising: a nozzle;a base;a mixed flow impeller;a motor for driving the mixed flow impeller to create an air flow through the nozzle, anda diffuser located downstream from the mixed flow impeller and at least partially surrounding a portion of the motor,wherein the nozzle is mounted on the base,wherein the base houses the mixed flow impeller,the nozzle comprising an interior passage for receiving the air flow from the base and a mouth through which the air flow is emitted,the nozzle extending substantially orthogonally about an axis to define an opening through which air from outside the bladeless fan assembly is drawn by the air flow emitted from the mouth,the fan assembly having a height extending from an end of the base remote from the nozzle to an end of the nozzle remote from the base, and a width perpendicular to the height, both the height and the width being perpendicular to the said axis, andwherein the width of the base is no more than 75% the width of the nozzle. 12. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 9 or 11, wherein the width of the base is in a range from 65% to 55% the width of the nozzle. 13. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 12, wherein the width of the base is around 50% the width of the nozzle. 14. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 9 or 11, wherein the height of the fan assembly is in the range 300 mm to 400 mm. 15. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 1 or 11, wherein the base is substantially cylindrical. 16. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 9 or 11, wherein the base has at least one air inlet, and wherein said at least one air inlet is arranged substantially orthogonal to said axis. 17. A fan assembly as claimed in claim 16, wherein said at least one air inlet comprises a plurality of air inlets extending about a second axis substantially orthogonal to said axis. 19. The fan assembly of claim 11, wherein the mixed flow impeller surrounds a lower part of the motor. 31.
