1. A wound closure device, comprising: a monofilament elongate body terminating at a distal-most end and a proximal-most end, and having a plurality of barbs extending from a surface thereof and extending at least partially in a distal direction; and a plug member having a tissue facing surface that
1. A wound closure device, comprising: a monofilament elongate body terminating at a distal-most end and a proximal-most end, and having a plurality of barbs extending from a surface thereof and extending at least partially in a distal direction; and a plug member having a tissue facing surface that is a proximally-facing surface, the distal-most end of the elongated body fixedly connected to the plug member at the tissue facing surface thereof such that the plug member is disposed at a distal-most end of the wound closure device such that all the barbs of the elongate body extend in a distal direction toward the plug member, wherein the plug member comprises a hydrogel, and wherein the elongate body, the plug member, or both, comprise at least one free reactive group for binding to tissue, the at least one free reactive group comprising an electrophilic functional group selected from the group consisting of N-hydroxy succinimide, sulfosuccinimides, carbonyldiimidazole, sulfonyl chloride, aryl halides, sulfosuccinimidyl esters, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl esters, succinimidyl esters, epoxides, aldehydes, maleimides, imidoesters, and combinations thereof. 2. The wound closure device according to claim 1, further comprising an inner member moveably positioned on the elongate body. 3. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the hydrogel swells from about 5% of its original volume to about 100% of its original volume. 4. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the plug member is configured to change dimension from a first, compressed shape for delivery to a second, expanded shape for placement. 5. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the plug member is selected from the group consisting of proteins, polysaccharides, polynucleotides, poly(alphahydroxy esters), poly(hydroxyl alkanoates), poly(ortho esters), polyurethanes, polylactones, poly(amino acids), cellulose, polyacrylates, polyethylene glycols, polyethylene oxides, and combinations thereof. 6. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the reactive group comprises a coating on a portion of a surface of the elongate body, the plug member, or both. 7. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the plug member further comprises an anti-adhesive coating. 8. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the elongate body is biodegradable. 9. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the elongate body further comprises a needle attached to the proximal-most end thereof. 10. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the electrophilic functional group binds to primary amines endogenous to a patient. 11. The wound closure device according to claim 1, wherein the surface of the elongated body is of a uniform diameter.
