The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said first member and said second member further comprise a proximal end, said proximal end of said first member and said proximal end of said second member being separated by a first transitioning dimension in said open configuration and being separated by a second transitioning dimension in said closed configuration. 3. The engaging system of claim 2, wherein said first transitioning dimension is larger than said second transitioning dimension. 4. The engaging system of claim 2, wherein said first transitioning dimension is smaller than said second transitioning dimension. 5. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said locking mechanism comprises a first locking portion and a second locking portion, relative movement of said at least one tissue engaging portion of said first member and said at least one tissue engaging portion of said second member being inhibited by operative association between said first locking portion and said second locking portion. 6. The engaging system of claim 5, wherein said first locking portion comprises at least one tooth located on said first member and said second locking portion comprising a locking member located on said second member. 7. The engaging system of claim 6, wherein said locking member and said at least one tooth inhibit said at least one tissue engaging portion of said first member and said at least one tissue engaging portion of said second member from opening. 8. The engaging system of claim 6, wherein said locking member is biased toward said at least one tooth. 9. The engaging system of claim 5, wherein said first locking portion comprises a latch located on said first member and said second locking portion comprising a latching portion located on said second member. 10. The engaging system of claim 9, wherein said latch and said latching portion inhibit said at least one tissue engaging portion of said first member and said at least one tissue engaging portion of said second member from opening. 11. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said at least one tissue engaging portion of said first member and said at least one tissue engaging portion of said second member are separated by a first distal dimension in said open configuration and are separated by a second distal dimension in said closed configuration, said first distal dimension being larger than said second distal dimension. 12. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said engaging element comprises bioabsorbable, biodegradable, and/or bioerodible material. 13. The engaging system of claim 12, wherein said engaging element further comprises collagen, polycaprolactone (PCL), poly-D,L-lactic acid, Poly-L-lactic acid, poly (lactide-co-glycolide), poly(hydroxybutyrate), polyanhydrides, and/or poly(glycolic acid). 14. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said retaining mechanism further comprises a retaining detent that engages said pivoting opening to selectably inhibit the relative motion between said engaging element and said retaining member. 15. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said retaining member and said transitioning member are axially aligned. 16. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said retaining member is configured to slidably receive said transitioning member. 17. The engaging system of claim 1, wherein said first member and said second member of said engaging element further comprise a transitioning portion, said transitioning member comprising a transitioning surface, said transitioning surface being shaped to engage with said transitioning portion of at least one of said first member and said second member of said engaging element. 18. The engaging system of claim 17, wherein said transitioning surface has a convex shape. 19. The engaging system of claim 17, wherein said transitioning surface has a concave shape.
