Systems, devices and methods to improve safety and efficiency in an operating room comprise providing a suture package that holds new suture needles and needle receptacles for storing used needles. The devices can be safely worn for the surgeon to self-dispense new suture needles in the near surgical field and to secure the used needles into a needle trap or a needle retainer located on his extremity, on his operative instruments or on the surgical drapes. The device may provide automated and/or simplified needle counting both during use and after removal from the surgical field. The device may be configured for ergonomic and efficient use so as to minimize the actions and motions of the surgeon to dispense and secure the needle.

1. A method of securing a dispensed suture needle, the method comprising: providing a needle receptacle comprising a housing having a top and a bottom and at least one opening between the top and the bottom configured and dimensioned to receive the dispensed suture needle inserted therethrough;inserting a dispensed suture needle into the opening of the housing with a needle driver;placing the dispensed suture needle in a secure zone of the housing, in an orientation with a tip of the dispensed suture needle secured;releasing the suture needle from the needle driver;detecting the dispensed suture needle placed into the opening;determining a number of a plurality of dispensed suture needles within the needle receptacle; anddisplaying the number of the plurality of dispensed suture needles within the needle receptacle on a visual display. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein inserting a dispensed suture needle comprises inserting the dispensed suture needle in a lateral orientation. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the dispensed suture needle comprises a curved suture needle having a tip, a trailing end, and a curved needle body extending between the tip and the trailing end, and wherein inserting a dispensed suture needle comprises inserting at least a portion of the curved needle body before the tip or the trailing end. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising repeating the steps of inserting, placing, and releasing until a plurality of dispensed suture needles has been secured in the needle receptacle. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein placing the dispensed suture needle in a secure zone of the housing comprises rendering innocuous both ends of the dispensed suture needle within the secure zone. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the top of the housing comprises a slot configured and dimensioned to receive a tip of the needle driver, and wherein placing the dispensed suture needle in a secure zone of the housing comprises moving the needle driver through the slot in a straight path or a spiral path. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein placing the dispensed suture needle in a secure zone of the housing comprises applying a rotational torque about a center axis to the needle driver. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising: viewing a plurality of dispensed suture needles within the secure zone through a window of the housing; anddetermining a number of the plurality of dispensed suture needles within the secure zone based upon the viewing step. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the needle receptacle comprises a first conductor and a second conductor that are electrically coupled to a power source, and the dispensed suture needle disposed within the needle receptacle is in contact with both the first conductor and the second conductor, and the detecting step comprises measuring an electrical current through the first conductor and the second conductor. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the needle receptacle is located within a near surgical field, and wherein the steps of inserting, placing, and releasing are performed within the near surgical field. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the near surgical field is bounded by a length extending from a front side of a torso of a surgeon to an incision, a width extending between forearms of the surgeon in a neutral rotation position and a height extending vertically from a height of the incision to shoulders of the surgeon. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the needle receptacle further comprises needle retention features to hold the dispensed suture needle between the top and the bottom, and wherein placing the dispensed suture needle in a secure zone of the housing comprises engaging the dispensed suture needle with the needle retention features. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the needle retention features comprise a plurality of protrusions extending from one or both of the top and the bottom, and wherein engaging the dispensed suture needle with the needle retention features comprises moving the dispensed suture needle against the plurality of protrusions. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the needle retention features comprise a compressive member, and engaging the dispensed suture needle with the needle retention features comprises compressing the compressive member against the dispensed suture needle. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising: providing a support; andcoupling the needle receptacle to the support, wherein the support is configured to be placed within a near surgical field. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the support comprises a coupling configured to couple the support to a limb of a surgeon, and wherein the method further comprises coupling the support to the forearm of the surgeon.
