Sulfur contaminants, such as elemental sulfur (S8), hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur components in fluids (e.g., air, natural gas, and other gases, as well as water and other liquids) are removed using a silicone-based chemical filter/bath. In one embodiment, a silicone-based chemical filter includes a membrane having a cross-linked silicone that is a reaction product of an olefin and a polyhydrosiloxane. For example, sulfur contaminants in air may be removed by passing the air through the membrane before the air enters a data center or other facility housing computer systems. In another embodiment, a silicone-based chemical bath includes a housing having an inlet port, an outlet port, and a chamber containing a silicone oil. For example, sulfur contaminants in air may be removed by passing the air through the silicone oil in the chamber before the air enters a data center or other facility housing computer systems.

1. A method for removing sulfur contaminants from air using a silicone-based chemical filter, comprising the steps of: providing a cross-linked silicone membrane, wherein the cross-linked silicone membrane or coating includes a reaction product of an olefin and a polyhydrosiloxane, and wherein the polyhydrosiloxane is cross-linked via a platinum catalyzed hydrosilation with the olefin;passing air containing one or more sulfur contaminants through the cross-linked silicone membrane, wherein the one or more sulfur contaminants contained in the air are absorbed by the cross-linked silicone membrane as the air passes through the cross-linked silicone membrane. 2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the polyhydrosiloxane is selected from the group consisting of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), polyethylhydrosiloxane, polypropylhydrosiloxane, polyphenylhydrosiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane methylhydrosiloxane copolymer, and combinations thereof. 3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the cross-linked silicone membrane or coating is a porous cross-linked silicone membrane having an average pore size within a range from approximately 100 Å to approximately 500 Å. 4. A method for removing sulfur contaminants from air using a silicone-based chemical filter, comprising the steps of: providing a porous cross-linked silicone membrane, wherein the porous cross-linked silicone membrane includes a reaction product of an olefin and a polyhydrosiloxane, wherein the polyhydrosiloxane is cross-linked via a hydrosilation with the olefin, and wherein the porous cross-linked silicone membrane has an average pore size within a range from approximately 100 Å to approximately 500 Å;passing air containing one or more sulfur contaminants through the porous cross-linked silicone membrane, wherein the one or more sulfur contaminants contained in the air are absorbed by the porous cross-linked silicone membrane. 5. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein the porous cross-linked silicone membrane is in fluid communication with a data center, and wherein the step of passing air containing one or more sulfur contaminants through the porous cross-lined silicone membrane includes the step of removing the one or more sulfur contaminants from the air before the air enters the data center. 6. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the one or more sulfur contaminants contained in the air include elemental sulfur (S8). 7. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein the one or more sulfur contaminants contained in the air include elemental sulfur (S8).
