A surgical delivery instrument for delivering a vascular hole closure device having first and second flexible members and a first and second engagement members extending from the respective flexible member. The delivery instrument includes a housing having first and second longitudinally extending openings and first and second projecting surfaces, the first projecting surface extending into the first opening for engagement by the first engagement member and the second projecting surface extending into the second opening for engagement by the second engagement member. The first engagement member is held by the first projecting surface until a predetermined force is applied to the first engagement member during placement of the closure device at a target site.

1. A method of delivering a vascular hole closure device to a vessel, the method comprising: providing a vascular hole closure device having a covering member, a first retainer, a first flexible member extending between the covering member and first retainer and a first engagement member extending from the first flexible member;providing a delivery instrument containing the first flexible member;inserting a distal portion of the delivery instrument into the vessel;exposing the covering member for placement inside the vessel; andmoving the delivery instrument proximally in a direction away from the covering member until the first engagement member is forced pass a first stop and comes into contact with a second stop within the delivery instrument to move the first retainer distally toward the covering member. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the closure device includes a second retainer, a second flexible member extending between the covering member and second retainer and a second engagement member extending from the second flexible member, and moving the delivery instrument proximally moves the second engagement member into contact with a third stop within the delivery instrument to move the second retainer distally toward the covering member. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein further proximal movement of the delivery instrument moves the second engagement member past the third stop and into contact with a fourth stop within the delivery instrument to move the second retainer further distally toward the covering member. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein further proximal movement of the delivery instrument severs the first and second flexible members. 5. The method of claim 2 wherein movement of the first retainer toward the covering member advances a first spherical retainer fixedly attached to the first flexible member toward the covering member and movement of the second retainer toward the covering member advances a second spherical retainer fixedly attached to the second flexible member toward the covering member. 6. The method of claim 2, wherein when a sufficient proximal force is applied to the delivery instrument, the second flexible member overrides the frictional engagement of the second flexible member with an opening in the covering member to move the second flexible member with respect to the covering member. 7. The method of claim 2, wherein the first and second retainers are in a stacked relationship within the delivery instrument. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the covering member is pivotable between a more longitudinal orientation for delivery and a transverse position for placement within the vessel. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein proximal movement of the delivery instrument causes the first engagement member to slide within a channel of a channel housing to enable the first flexible member to contact a cutting member positioned within the delivery instrument to sever the first flexible member. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein movement of the first retainer toward the covering member advances a spherical retainer fixedly attached to the first flexible member toward the covering member. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein when a sufficient proximal force is applied to the delivery instrument, the first flexible member overrides frictional engagement of the first flexible member within an opening in the covering member to move the first flexible member with respect to the covering member. 12. A method of delivering a vascular hole closure device to a vessel, the method comprising: providing a delivery instrument having a first lumen to receive a first flexible member and a second lumen to receive a second flexible member;inserting a distal portion of the delivery instrument into the vessel to deliver a first portion of the vascular hole closure device internal of the vessel;moving the delivery instrument proximally in a direction away from the vessel to initially pull the first flexible member proximally and subsequently pull the second flexible member proximally, wherein pulling of the first and second flexible members advances extravascular portions of the vascular closure device toward the vessel; wherein the delivery instrument includes a first reduced cross sectional area and movement of the first flexible member proximally is restricted by the first reduced cross-sectional area until a sufficient proximal force in a direction away from the vessel is applied; and wherein the delivery instrument includes a second reduced cross sectional area and movement of the second flexible member proximally is restricted by the second reduced cross sectional area until a sufficient proximal force in a direction away from the vessel is applied. 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of cutting the first flexible member and the second flexible member by cutting structure in the delivery instrument. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein upon sufficient proximal movement of the delivery instrument in a direction away from the vessel the first and second flexible members are cut by the cutting structure. 15. The method of claim 12, wherein the delivery instrument has a third lumen and a fourth lumen, the first flexible member having a first looped portion for receipt of portions of the first flexible member within the first and third lumens and the second flexible member having a second looped portion for receipt of portions of the second flexible member within the second and fourth lumens. 16. The method of claim 12, wherein the delivery instrument has first and second angled channels, and wherein moving the delivery instrument proximally moves the first and second flexible members into the respective first and second channels to sever the first and second flexible members after placement of the vascular hole closure device. 17. The method of claim 12, wherein after insertion of the first portion of the hole closure device within the vessel, proximal movement of the delivery instrument moves the first portion of the vascular hole disclosure device into abutment with a wall of the vessel to cover an opening in the vessel. 18. The method of claim 12, wherein upon sufficient proximal movement of the delivery instrument and placement of extravascular portions of the vascular closure device external of the vessel, the first and second flexible members exit from the first and second lumens of the delivery instrument.
